Resident-focused trauma-informed medical education policies: an environmental scan of Canadian medical schools and partner organizations.

BACKGROUND: Psychological trauma among resident physicians (residents) is common yet underrecognized, even though it can significantly impact learning, patient care, and well-being. Trauma-informed approaches are one way in which trauma can be mitigated. The purpose of this study was to examine institutional policies related to resident-focused trauma-informed medical education (RF-TIME) at Canadian institutions involved in providing and governing physician training. METHODS: We conducted an environmental scan of publicly available online content related to RF-TIME at Canadian medical schools

Integrating Citizen Science into Advanced Practice Nursing education: a contemporary challenge.

Advanced Practice Nursing is internationally recognised as an innovative model of practice that expands the traditional scope of nursing by integrating specialised knowledge, advanced clinical skills, and greater autonomy in clinical decision-making. Within this model, research competence is recognised as a strategic pillar for consolidating Advanced Practice Nursing practice. Citizen Science, in turn, represents an innovative approach that promotes the active involvement of citizens throughout the research process, strengthening the alignment between research priorities and community needs. Governance-First Deployment of the Aims Innovations Research Management System to Accelerate Participant-Based Public Health Research.

Participant-based studies face fragmented workflows. We describe implementation of the Aims Innovations Research Management System, a cloud-based unified platform that supports the operations pipeline and includes participant-facing AI agents for outreach, screening, consent, and follow-up. Controls include private AI endpoints with no-training assurances, study isolation, human handoff thresholds, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) safeguards, and tamper-evident audit logging. As of June 2026, 10 academic institutions completed governance reviews and initiated studies

On the other side of the screen: Understanding the personal, professional, and cultural impacts of flexible work on nurse academics and institutions.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, flexible work arrangements, including working from home and remote roles, have become a sustained feature of academic life. While these models offer ongoing benefits such as flexibility, accessibility, and accommodation of diverse personal circumstances, there remains limited discussion of how they are reshaping academic work culture and affecting campus-based colleagues. The shift away from shared physical workspaces has altered key dimensions of professional life, diminishing informal collegial interactions. Although existing literature has explored the pedagogic

Developing curriculum archetypes as a reflective tool for health professions educators: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Curriculum conceptualisations in health professions education (HPE) significantly influence teaching practices and learning outcomes, yet remain varied and often implicit among educators. This study aims to elucidate the diverse ways educators perceive and enact curriculum by developing an empirically grounded framework of curriculum archetypes. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 45 health professions educators across different disciplines and multiple institutions between January 2023 and December 2024. Interviews, lasting 45–75 min, explored participants’ views

A Dual Hospital-University Specialist Training Reform to Address Workforce Shortage and Geographic Maldistribution in Indonesia: Integrative Qualitative Policy Process Review.

BACKGROUND: Indonesia faces 3 interlocking medical workforce crises: an absolute specialist deficit projected to reach 70,000 by 2032 (national density of 0.18 per 1000 population vs the Ministry of National Development Planning [Bappenas] target of 0.28), severe maldistribution (with nearly 59% of specialists concentrated in Java), and a structural anomaly in which residents pay tuition while performing essential clinical work. The 2023 Health Law (Law 17/2023) authorized a transformative reform: a hospital-based residency pathway (Rumah Sakit Pendidikan Penyelenggara Utama [primary teaching

Lessons Learned From an Executive Leadership Development Program and Their Impact on Academic Radiology.

Academic medical centers, and particularly academic radiology, are undergoing profound transformations driven by factors such as expansion of clinical workload, workforce shortages, progressive expectations for educational and research activities, increasing enterprise integration, and the need for rapid adoption of new and developing technologies such as artificial intelligence. As a result, radiologists are increasingly expected to assume formal, and at times, informal leadership roles that require influencing organizational culture, leading complex change, and coordinating multidisciplinary

Signaling execution readiness: The evolving leadership requirements for biotech fundraising.

In a selective global biotech funding environment characterized by a 'flight to quality', startups must signal execution readiness to secure capital. Based on a dataset of Japanese drug discovery startups, we examine how management teams' professional and educational backgrounds relate to fundraising performance, finding stage-dependent patterns. Early-stage startups are predominantly academic-led, yet raise less than those led by pharmaceutical veterans. In later stages, CEOs with purely academic backgrounds are associated with lower funding, whereas CEOs with medical degrees or pharmaceutica

The Augmented Leader: Four Competencies for AI-Integrated Leadership Development in Higher Education.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping decision-making and organizational life, yet leadership development in higher education has not evolved at the same pace. To address this gap, the article proposes the concept of the "augmented leader" and develops a four-competency framework for AI-integrated leadership: algorithmic literacy, strategic use of AI, ethical leadership and governance, and culture and adoption. Based on an integrative literature review and expert-informed thematic synthesis, the framework offers a structured perspective on leadership in AI-mediated environments. The articl

Building and Sustaining Scholarly Communities in Health Professions Education: Lessons from U.S. Academies.

INTRODUCTION: Academic health centers have invested in academies to promote health professions education scholarship, yet many struggle to sustain vibrant scholarly communities. We aimed to identify practices that support their development and long-term sustainability. METHODS: Using a constructivist approach, we conducted a qualitative interview study in 2025 with leaders from all four geographic regions of the U.S. Inclusion criteria required that participants direct an academy or analogous institutional structure intended to promote educational scholarship, and that they could speak to bui

Healing Minds Through Education: Cultural Pathways to Medical and Health Humanities in Post-conflict Iraq.

Iraq has endured decades of political instability, war, and social fragmentation that have profoundly affected the nation's psychological and cultural landscape. The erosion of health infrastructures and the normalization of trauma have produced a population in need not only of medical intervention but also of moral and social repair. While biomedical psychiatry remains indispensable for diagnosis and treatment, it does not by itself fully address the relational, cultural, and ethical dimensions of suffering shaped by prolonged violence. This paper examines how Iraqi medical educators and clin

Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs and Learning Sustainability: A Southeast Asian Context.

As a widely offered course in International Relations (IR) programs, the teaching and learning of Southeast Asian Regional Dynamics (SARD) struggles to adopt a pedagogical strategy that counters stagnancy and passive learning. The problem is exacerbated when SARD courses discuss topics of sustainability in Southeast Asia, which obligates instructors to introduce complex empirical cases that may be difficult for students to grasp. As a means to ignite the students' interests and allow a platform in which students can see directly the issues that defy sustainable development in the region, this

Experience with Dog Sterilization Campaigns for Surveillance of Zoonotic Diseases in Ecuador: Building Bridges with Animal Organizations to Improve One Health Research.

The extensive population of free-roaming dogs poses significant public health risks in low- and middle-income countries because of their potential role in spreading infectious and zoonotic diseases. This article discusses the successful collaboration between academia and nonprofit animal welfare organizations in Ecuador to enhance One Health surveillance despite limited research resources. This collaborative model could serve as a valuable example for other countries in the Americas and globally, where community-based strategies may improve One Health policies.

Establishing a Multidisciplinary Framework to Study Drug-Drug Interactions of Hormonal Contraceptives: An Invitation to Collaborate.

Hormonal contraceptive agents (HCAs) are widely used throughout the world, and women taking HCAs are likely to take other medications. However, little is known about the clinical effect of most drug-drug interactions (DDIs) associated with HCAs. A team of interdisciplinary outcomes and pharmacometric researchers from academia and industry jointly engage in a research project to (i) quantitatively elucidate DDI impacts on unintended pregnancies and breakthrough bleeding, and (ii) establish a DDI-prediction framework to inform optimal use of HCAs.

Medication-assisted therapy for opioid-dependent incarcerated populations in New Mexico: statewide efforts to increase access.

An acute awareness of the profound social and medical costs associated with heroin and opiate addiction in New Mexico has led a group of advocates from public health, state and local governments, corrections, academia, and community activists to collaborate for the purpose of increasing access to medication-assisted therapy (MAT) with buprenorphine and methadone in New Mexico. This paper describes these collaborations, with a focus on the evolution of harm reduction approaches to substance abuse disorders and successful efforts to make MAT available to incarcerated persons.

Neurodiversity in the Minds of Students: From Perception to Campus Programming.

Neurodiversity is a social justice movement at the nexus of neuroscience, academia, and public policy. A contemporary view of neurodiversity is one that embraces neurological differences, encompassing all "neurotypes," including more specific identifiers like autistic or dyslexic. The goal of this study was to investigate student awareness and perception of neurodiversity since they are the next generation of public policy makers. Students enrolled in Introduction to Behavioral Neuroscience (N=146) were exposed to different information sources (popular, academic, TED talk, or choose/find their…
