Association between acculturation and structural assimilation and mini-mental state examination-assessed cognitive impairment in older Mexican Americans: findings from the San Antonio Longitudinal Study of Aging.

Older Mexican Americans (MAs) have consistently scored lower on the Folstein Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) than older European Americans (EAs). These lower scores may arise from factors other than those traditionally posited (age and education). Thus, this study examined the association between acculturation and structural assimilation and MMSE-assessed cognitive impairment, taking into account education, income, and other contextual factors. Subjects were participants in the San Antonio Longitudinal Study of Aging, a community-based study of chronic disease and functional status in 457…

Migrant Mothers' Acculturative Stress and Young Children's Social Skills in South Korea: The Mediating Role of Mindful Parenting and the Moderating Roles of Multicultural Sensitivity and Social Support.

Migrant mothers experience high levels of acculturative stress while raising children in a new cultural environment. Such stress can negatively impact parenting behaviors and child development. This study draws on the Family Stress Model and ecocultural theory to examine the mediating role of mindful parenting and the moderating effects of multicultural sensitivity and social support in the relationship between acculturative stress and the social skills of young children (aged 1-7 years) of migrant mothers. Validated self-report measures were used to collect data from 338 migrant mothers resid

The development of a model of acculturation and health practices among sub-Saharan African Men (MAPS) in the United States: a grounded theory study of prostate cancer early detection.

BACKGROUND: The past two decades has seen a steady rise in the number of immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa to the United States (US). While this population represent one of the fastest growing segments of the US immigrant population, research examining the impact of migration on the health practices and behaviors among this population has lagged. Acculturation is the modification of an individual’s beliefs, values, and behavior upon contact with a different culture. This study aimed to enhance understanding of the links between acculturation and health practices among sub-Saharan Africa immig…

Trauma exposure, acculturation stress, and tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, and amphetamine-type stimulant use among Syrian-origin adolescents under temporary protection in Türkiye: a 12-month longitudinal mediation analysis.

Background: Adolescence is a critical window for substance-use initiation, and early initiation predicts later substance-use disorders, school disengagement, and long-term harm. Displaced adolescents accumulate trauma and post-migration adversity during this window, yet host-country longitudinal evidence remains limited. Türkiye hosts one of the largest Syrian populations under temporary protection. Objectives: We examined trauma exposure, acculturation stress, and 12-month substance-use trajectories among Syrian-origin adolescents under temporary protection in Türkiye, testing acculturation st…

The Association between Parity and Inflammation among Mexican-American Women of Reproductive Age Varies by Acculturation Level: Results of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2006).

INTRODUCTION: Parity and acculturation are linked with cardiometabolic risk. Their joint association with cardiometabolic health among Mexican-American women is less established, even though immigrant Mexican-American women have the highest fertility rate in the United States. We examined the modifying role of acculturation on the association of parity with a cardiometabolic risk biomarker, C-reactive protein (CRP). METHODS: Participants (n = 1,002) were women of Mexican background, ages 16 to 39 years, in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 through 2006. T…

The Association of the Parent-Child Language Acculturation Gap with Obesity and Cardiometabolic Risk in Hispanic/Latino Youth: Results from the Hispanic Community Children's Health Study/Study of Latino Youth (SOL Youth).

BACKGROUND: Hispanic/Latino youth are disproportionately burdened by obesity and have a high prevalence of prediabetes and dyslipidemia. Differences in parent and child acculturation related to language use and preference (i.e., language acculturation) are associated with adverse cardiometabolic health behaviors, but no study has examined associations with cardiometabolic markers. PURPOSE: To determine whether discordance in parent-child language acculturation (parent-child acculturation gap) was associated with poor youth cardiometabolic health. METHODS: Hispanic/Latino 8-16-year-olds (n = …

The influence of cultural adaptation and sexual risk behaviors on cervical cytology in a Hispanic population.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the level of cultural adaptation (acculturation) of Hispanic women is associated with increased sexual risk behaviors and cervical cytological abnormalities. STUDY DESIGN: Hispanic women 18-55 years of age (mean, 30.5 ± 8.32 years) underwent routine Papanicoulaou testing and completed a comprehensive survey (n = 3149). Acculturation (cultural adaptation) was measured using the Short Acculturation Scale for Hispanics. Structural equation modeling was used to test a mediation model. RESULTS: Highly acculturated women engaged in a greater number of sexual risk be…

Prevalence and Patterns of Dental Care Utilization among US-Born and Non-US Born Hispanics in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos.

OBJECTIVES: Access to routine dental services is important to maintaining good oral health. The aims of this study were to describe the dental care utilization patterns of a diverse group of Hispanic/Latino men and women and assess differences in dental care utilization by perceived need for dental care and proxy measures of acculturation. METHODS: Data from 13,792 participants of the Hispanic Community Health Study were analyzed with SAS 9.4. Time since last dental visit was dichotomized into <1 and ≥1 y. Acculturation measures included the language and social subscales of the Short Accultur…

Predictors of Toxic Metal/Metalloid Exposures Among Mexican Americans in Starr County, Texas.

BACKGROUND: Arsenic, cadmium, and lead are toxic elements that widely contaminate our environment. These toxicants are associated with acute and chronic health problems, and evidence suggests that minority communities, including Hispanic/Latino Americans, are disproportionately exposed. Few studies have assessed culturally specific predictors of exposure to understand the potential drivers of racial/ethnic exposure disparities. OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate acculturation measures as predictors of metal/metalloid (hereafter "metal") concentrations among Mexican American adults to illuminate…

Psychological traumas and depression in a sample of Vietnamese people in the United States.

This article investigates the relationships among premigration stresses, nightmares, acculturation stresses, personal efficacy, and depression in a sample of 147 adult Vietnamese Americans. The analysis revealed that premigration stresses, nightmares, and acculturation stresses had significant indirect effects on depression. Acculturation stresses diminish personal efficacy, and a weakness of personal efficacy leads to higher depression. Age, gender, marital status, and English language ability also exert differential effects on premigration stresses, nightmares, acculturation stresses, person…

Pushing the envelope for cultural appropriateness: does evidence support cultural tailoring in type 2 diabetes interventions for Mexican American adults?

PURPOSE: This study explores the potential utility of a culturally tailored diabetes management intervention approach by testing associations between acculturation and diabetes-related beliefs among Mexican-American adults with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Data from 288 Mexican-American adults with type 2 diabetes were obtained via a bilingual, telephone-administered survey. Participants were drawn from a stratified, random sample designed to obtain maximum variability in acculturation. The survey assessed diabetes-related beliefs, intervention preferences, and the following three acculturation …

Cognitive function in immigrants from Mexico and Latin America: The role of age at migration.

BackgroundLatino immigrants in the United States represent diverse national origins, with Mexicans comprising the largest group. Cognitive health disparities among Latino immigrants may reflect differences in migration experiences, including age at migration, socioeconomic differences, and acculturation. Whether Mexican immigrants differ from Latin American immigrants in cognitive outcomes remains unclear.ObjectiveThis study examined the independent and interactive effects of Mexican origin and age at migration on cognitive levels and decline compared to other Latin American immigrants. We als…

Obesity and immigration among Latina women.

Several studies have shown a positive association between acculturation and obesity in Hispanics. We sought to examine the association in a sample of urban Hispanic women. Using data collected in the Chicago Breast Health Project, we used logistic regression to examine the association of obesity (BMI > or = 30 kg/m(2)) with language acculturation and years in the US in a sample of 388 Hispanic women. Women self-reported the number of years they had lived in the US (mean 17.6) as well as their preferred language across several domains, which was used to calculate a language acculturation score.…

"Collision of Eastern and Western Cultures": A Qualitative Study on Changing Perceptions of End-of-Life Care Among Older Chinese Immigrants.

INTRODUCTION: Older Chinese immigrants have lower rates of end-of-life (EOL) care planning and use than non-Hispanic White counterparts, resulting in unmet palliative and hospice care needs. While acculturation is identified as a facilitator of end-of-life care planning, little is known about how perceptions shift throughout the acculturation process. Guided by the process model of acculturation, this qualitative study explored how perceptions of EOL care among older foreign-born Chinese immigrants changed during acculturation. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design with language-matched f…

The association between immigrant generational status, child maltreatment history and intimate partner violence (IPV): evidence from a nationally representative survey.

PURPOSE: The extent to which immigrant-specific factors influence the intergenerational transmission of family violence is unknown. The objectives of this paper are to examine the associations between immigrant generational status (IGS), child maltreatment (CM), intimate partner violence (IPV) and acculturation (i.e., the extent to which an individual adopts the values, language and attitudes of a new culture). METHODS: The sample was drawn from wave two of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC; n = 34,653), a nationally representative survey of United St…

Associations of Parental Monitoring and Violent Peers with Latino Youth Violence.

This study aimed to examine the associations of parental monitoring and violent peers with violence among Latino youth, and whether these associations varied by acculturation. 133 adolescents were surveyed. Associations between parental monitoring, peer violence, and physical and non-physical violence were examined using bivariate and multivariable negative binomial regression. Multivariable analysis was stratified by age and acculturation. A path model examined whether peer violence mediated the relationship between parental monitoring and youth violence. Stratified analysis demonstrated that…

Sociocultural determinants of children's oral health among immigrants in Canada.

OBJECTIVE: A conceptual model was designed and tested to predict immigrant children's oral health in Canada by examining parental acculturation and perceived social support (PSS) using structural equation modelling. METHODS: A convenience sample of first-generation immigrant parents and their children aged 2-12 years were recruited by multilingual community workers in Edmonton, Canada. Parents completed a validated questionnaire on demographics, child's oral health (OH) behaviours, parental acculturation and PSS. Dental examinations determined children's dental caries rate using DMFT/dmft ind…

Health literacy in Korean immigrants at risk for type 2 diabetes.

Rising incidence of type 2 diabetes (DM) in Korean immigrants has highlighted the need for better prevention efforts. Health literacy is an … ow level of health literacy in the sample. Health literacy was correlated with English proficiency, acculturation, and lower waist to hip ratios among all participants, and with lower blood glucose levels among highly acculturated participants. Korean immigrants who are less acculturated may have lower health literacy than those who are more acculturated. Thus, …

The impact of discrimination on binge eating in a nationally representative sample of Latine individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Latines have higher rates of eating disorders characterized by binge eating compared to their non-Latine white counterparts, yet culturally and socially relevant factors related to binge eating in Latines have been largely understudied. The purpose of the current study was to examine how discrimination and acculturative stress were associated with binge eating in a nationally representative sample of Latines. An additional aim was to test the extent to which family cohesion and social support could buffer against the effects of discrimination and acculturative stress on binge eating
