PURPOSE: In this experiment two hypotheses were tested. The first hypothesis was that viewing 3D stereoscopic stimuli which are located geometrically beyond the screen on which the images are displayed would induce exophoric heterophoria (phoria) changes (adaptation). Employing the technique of infrared television pupillography, the pupil area in darkness, pupillary unrest, and various parameters of the light response were measured in 5 patients with clinical and biochemical overt thyrotoxicosis and in 2 patients with longstanding severe primary myxoedema. The patients were studied before and after medical treatment. The treatments did not induce significant alterations in any of the parameters measured. Thus pupillary measurements are not a convenient method for recording of peripheral thyroid hormone action.

A 19-year-old Japanese woman developed diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus and optic atrophy. Other abnormal ocular findings included color blindness, elevated dark adaptation threshold, loss of oscillatory potentials after a single white flash electroretinogram (ERG), reduced cone response in photopic ERG, and reduced pupillary response to light and convergence. Diabetic retinopathy, which has been thought to be very rare in this syndrome, also was found in the fundi of this patient.

Three patients with late stage primary biliary cirrhosis were found to have appreciable night blindness. Serum vitamin A concentrations were low in all three patients despite regular intramuscular supplementation in two. All patients responded dramatically to high dose oral supplementation, with full recovery of adaptation to dark and visual fields. Oral rather than intramuscular vitamin A supplementation seems appropriate in the prevention of ocular complications of vitamin A deficiency in biliary cirrhosis.

Cholinergic drugs and anticholinesterases have caused ocular complications including cataracts, iris cysts, retinal detachment, iritis, increased intraocular tension, allergic and toxic reactions, and hypermia. The visual complications include accommodative spasm; myopia and reduced visual acuity; changes in vision sensitivity, dark adaptation, and visual fields; and discomfort. The systemic complications are those common to cholinergic drugs and anticholinesterases. This review is intended as a ready reference to the drugs that cause such effects and source material.

Patients who had undergone extracapsular cataract extraction with implantation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens, and normal subjects of corresponding age and vision were examined with the mesoptometer and nyktometer to compare their twilight vision and glare sensitivity. All the results were poorer in patients with intraocular lenses. Statistically, some of the differences in the results of examinations performed in the two groups were highly significant. Dry eye is a potent stimulus of both innate and adaptive immune systems. At the nexus of the dry eye inflammatory/immune response is the dynamic interplay between the ocular surface epithelia and the bone marrow-derived immune cells. On the one hand, ocular surface epithelial cells play a key initiating role in this inflammatory reaction. On the other hand, they are targets of cytokines produced by activated T cells that are recruited to the ocular surface in response to dry eye. This interaction between epithelial and immune cells in dry eye will be thoroughly reviewed.
