A critical review of the empirical literature on coping and panic disorder.

The present review critically examines the available empirical literature on coping and panic disorder (PD). As a basis for the review, key terms are defined and conceptual models are presented. The empirical literature on coping processes in relation to PD is then critically reviewed with a specific focus on methodology. For each section, primary conclusions are presented. In the final section, directions for future research are provided both in terms of methodological and conceptual issues.

The psychosocial burden and stress coping strategies among seafarers.

BACKGROUND: The seafarers' professional group is one of the most numerous in the world. According to the statistics of the European Maritime Safety Agency (2020), there are approximately 280,000 people employed at sea in the European Union. The specific work environment on the ship (climatic, physical, chemical, psychological factors, etc.) is related to experiencing long-term stress. The World Health Organization considers work-related stressors to be very important determinants of health and disease. One of the basic psychological resources related to adaptation to demanding working conditio

[Magnesium deficiency and stress: Issues of their relationship, diagnostic tests, and approaches to therapy].

Magnesium plays an important role in the functions of the central nervous system. It takes part in the regulation of the cell membrane, the transmembrane transport of calcium and sodium ions, and metabolic reactions that produce, accumulate, transfer, and utilize energy, free radicals, and their oxidation products. The magnesium-containing substances include many sequestered antigens, such as glial fibrillary acidic protein, S100, and neuron-specific enolase; magnesium may act as a neuroprotector that is able to modulate the regulation of blood-brain barrier permeability. Investigations have d

Psychological functioning among members of a small polar expedition.

BACKGROUND: While depressed mood, insomnia, irritability and impaired cognition represent common responses to the physical and psychosocial stressors associated with polar environments, wide variations exist in their expression and the degree to which they adversely affect the health and performance of polar expeditioners. In particular, the process of successful adaptation to polar environments and the psychosocial characteristics associated with this process remains poorly understood. HYPOTHESIS: Psychosocial characteristics associated with successful coping with typical stressors are also

Time Adaptation Shows Duration Selectivity in the Human Parietal Cortex.

Although psychological and computational models of time estimation have postulated the existence of neural representations tuned for specific durations, empirical evidence of this notion has been lacking. Here, using a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) adaptation paradigm, we show that the inferior parietal lobule (IPL) (corresponding to the supramarginal gyrus) exhibited reduction in neural activity due to adaptation when a visual stimulus of the same duration was repeatedly presented. Adaptation was strongest when stimuli of identical durations were repeated, and it gradually decr

Prism Adaptation Deficits in Schizophrenia.

Recent clinical and neurobehavioral evidence suggests cerebellar dysfunction in schizophrenia (SZ). We used the prism adaptation motor task (PAT) to probe specific cerebellar circuits in the disorder. PAT requires cerebellum-dependent motor adaptation, perceptual remapping, and strategic control. A failure to engage in early corrective processes may indicate impairment within either the cerebellum or regions contributing to strategic components, such as the parietal lobe, while an inability to develop and retain a visuomotor shift with time strongly suggests cerebellar impairment. Psychological correlates of acute mountain sickness: a prospective study.

Extreme high-altitude environments pose significant challenges to both physiological adaptation and mental health. This study aimed to characterize the dynamic relationship between Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and psychological health, identifying symptom-level drivers of psychological distress in mountaineers. Fifteen mountaineers participating in three expeditions were assessed one week before ascent, upon arrival at high altitude, immediately post-climb, and one week after. The expeditions covered a maximum altitude range of 5276 m to 6621 m (Erfeng of Siguniang Mountain: 5276 m, 4 days; M

Cognitive and psychological reactions of the general population three months after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.

BACKGROUND: The largest earthquake on record in Japan (magnitude 9.0) occurred on March 11, 2011, and the subsequent tsunami devastated the Pacific coast of Northern Japan. These further triggered the Fukushima I nuclear power plant accidents. Such a hugely complex disaster inevitably has negative psychological effects on general populations as well as on the direct victims. While previous disaster studies enrolled descriptive approaches focusing on direct victims, the structure of the psychological adjustment process of people from the general population has remained uncertain. The current st

Family functioning and social support in the adaptation of caregivers of children with sickle cell syndromes.

OBJECTIVE: To examine moderating effects of family functioning and social support on the relationship of child-related stressors to caregivers' psychological adaptation in a sample of caregivers of children with a chronic illness. METHOD: Participants were 67 caregivers of children and adolescents with sickle cell syndromes. We conducted MANOVAs and subsequent effect size calculations to determine if family functioning would buffer the effects of caring for difficult-to-manage children with this illness. RESULTS: Findings supported a moderator effect of family functioning on the association

Unravelling Distress in Psychotic-Like Experiences: A Systematic Review of Non-Clinical Populations.

INTRODUCTION: Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are subthreshold psychotic phenomena that occur along the psychosis continuum and are frequently accompanied by distress. However, the factors underlying distress in individuals reporting PLEs-particularly within non-clinical populations-remain insufficiently understood. This systematic review aims to synthesise the evidence on factors directly or indirectly associated with distress in PLEs among non-clinical samples. METHODS: A systematic search of Medline, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane (January 2000-March 2025) using the terms psychotic

Interpreting psychological resilience in young African American women: a multilevel socioecological framework.

Resilience theory emphasizes that adaptive capacity must be understood in relation to adversity and the resources available for adaptation. However, public health research primarily interprets psychological resilience measures as indicators of individual adaptive capacity, with limited integration of sociological, historical, and developmental context. Such narrow interpretations of resilience may be especially consequential for young African American women, who experience disproportionately high exposure to stressors shaped by socioecological structures. This perspective proposes a socioecolo
