BACKGROUND: The evolving healthcare landscape emphasizes the need for health systems to adapt to growing complexities, with new models of care enabling healthcare providers to optimize their scope of practice and coordination of care. Despite increasing interest in advanced practice, confusion persists regarding the roles and scopes of practice of healthcare providers, exacerbated by variations in regulations and titles. We sought to clarify the differences between specialized healthcare professionals, practitioners, and clinical specialists; to describe their roles; and to propose initiatives

This article presents two case examples in which women with sickle cell disease, when invited to participate in a nursing experiment, requested assignment to the experimental group. This experience stimulated the authors to explore the ethics of random assignment relative to equipoise, informed consent, patient choices, study validity, the clinician-patient relationship, patient support networks, and other issues. There is a need for in-depth discussion about random assignment and its implications within the nursing research and advanced practice communities.

Xylazine has emerged as a common adulterant in the illicit drug supply and is increasingly associated with severe skin and soft tissue complications. Existing literature has largely focused on advanced wound presentations characterized by extensive tissue necrosis, hospitalization, and surgical intervention. Although these presentations are clinically significant, they may not reflect the full spectrum of xylazine-associated wounds encountered in emergency nursing practice. Early-stage lesions may present as subtle findings, including superficial ulcerations, papules, pustules, bumps, or multi

A 10-session behavioral course for self-management of auditory hallucinations in patients with schizophrenia has demonstrated positive outcomes. This article evaluates both the course's implementation and benefits to patients attending the course. Teleconferencing, electronic media, and 26 monthly conference calls were used to educate six advanced practice nurses (APNs) at six sites about the course implementation. Thirty-two patients within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs participated in the course. All of the APNs reported course helpfulness, improved communication with patients abou

BACKGROUND: The teaching of human anatomy is often based on practices of cadaver dissection and prosected specimens. However, exposure to human cadavers might be stressful and anxiety-inducing for students. The aim of this study is to explore the degree of satisfaction and anxiety among first-year students in the Medicine, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Nursing programmes at the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (Spain) who are experiencing their first dissection/prosection practice to develop stress coping strategies.
METHODS: A total of 204 health sciences students participated in

BACKGROUND: Transthoracic intracardiac catheters are central catheters placed in the operating room at the conclusion of cardiac surgery for infants and children. Complications associated with these catheters (eg, bleeding, migration, premature removal, infection, leakage, and lack of function) have been described. However, no researchers have addressed the nursing management of these catheters in the intensive care unit, including catheter dressing and securement, mobilization of patients, and flushing the catheters, or the impact of these interventions on patients' outcomes.

Transformational leadership (TL) is a highly discussed approach in the literature for many professions. Likewise, the TL approach continues to be explored in a myriad of nursing contexts to demonstrate its advantages for practice and client health. The tension between custody and care is particular to correctional nursing practice, such as the correctional priorities of safety and security that often override caring-focused nursing practice. Presented herein, is information relating to correctional nursing leadership as found in the minimal, available literature; and hypothetical examples of h

OBJECTIVES: There is little research to help health care professionals understand what patient outcomes are considered a priority in advanced liver or kidney cancer. Knowing what is important to patients can help promote person-centered approaches to treatment and disease management. The aim of this study was to identify those patient-reported outcomes (PROs) that patients, carers, and health care professionals consider as "core" when providing care to those with advanced liver or kidney cancer.
DATA SOURCES: A three-round Delphi study was undertaken to ask experts by profession or experience

Frailty is highly prevalent in patients with end stage kidney disease (ESKD) and predictive of morbidity. Nurses lack frailty education and face practical challenges to assessment, which prevent effective interventions to address frailty. A quality improvement project sought to determine if frailty education and utilization of a renal frailty index tool impacts telephonic case management nursing care of patients by improving knowledge, perception, identification, and assessment of frailty, thereby prompting nursing interventions. Positive impacts were seen across all outcomes influencing outre

During the past century, medical technology has evolved to enhance quality and quantity of life. Medications, surgeries, and implantable devices have been developed and enhanced to reduce complications and improve patient outcomes. The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is one of the most substantial advances in life-saving modalities. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation has been widely used for patients with heart or lung failure across the lifespan. Expansion and simplifications of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation circuit designs have informed changes in patient treatment (from be

BACKGROUND: Alcohol withdrawal is a common and potentially life-threatening presentation in custodial health care. Although structured assessment tools and evidence-based pharmacological interventions remain essential, they offer limited conceptual guidance on how forensic nurses integrate biological, psychological, pharmacological, relational, and environmental information during periods of acute instability.
AIM: To introduce the Clinical Stabilization Framework (CSF) as a conceptual model supporting forensic nursing clinical reasoning during alcohol withdrawal in custody.
METHODS: Synthes

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex psychiatric condition often linked with self-harm, comorbidities, and high healthcare use. Nurses, frequently on the front line of care, report relational difficulties that may stem from insufficient training. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among nurses in three psychiatric hospitals in Northern France. An anonymous online questionnaire assessed professional identity, nursing school training, transition into practice, perceptions of BPD, and comfort in care. 210 nurses were included. Most judged their psychiatric training incomplete, c
