Albendazole is used as a typical antiparasitic agent worldwide. The side effects of albendazole may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, headache, alopecia, and increased liver enzymes. Mild elevation of the liver enzyme has been reported in more than 10% of cases, but drug induced liver injury was reported to be very rare. A 30-year-old woman visited the Dong-A University Hospital with anorexia, nausea, jaundice, and elevated liver enzyme. For diagnosis, other acute hepatitis etiologies were excluded, but the prophylactic administration of albendazole was verified. This paper …

BACKGROUND: Strongyloidiasis is a gut infection with Strongyloides stercoralis which is common world wide. Chronic infection usually causes a skin rash, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation, and respiratory problems, and it can be fatal in people with immune deficiency. It may be treated with ivermectin or albendazole or thiabendazole.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of ivermectin versus benzimidazoles (albendazole and thiabendazole) for treating chronic strongyloides infection.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group Specialized Register (24 August 2015); the Coc…

The widespread use of mebendazole and albendazole for treating intestinal nematode infections in human populations is raising concerns that careful monitoring pro- cedures should be in place to identify any emergence of drug resistance. In this article, Andy Bennett and Helen Guyatt discuss whether benchmark parasitological drug efficacy rates can be defined for these anthelmintics, by analysing published data on cure rates and egg reduction rates in the treatment of Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm.

1. The in vivo S-oxidation of albendazole was measured from the pharmacokinetic profile of albendazole sulphoxide and sulphone determined in young male sheep receiving oral albendazole (1.9 mg/kg). Studies were carried out before, and each month after, oral infestation by 150 metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica. 2. Parasitic pathology was ascertained by clinical observation of animals, and the increase in plasma antibodies directed against liver flukes. 3. Rate of conversion of sulphoxide to sulphone and rate of sulphone elimination, were respectively decreased by 47% and 87% at week 8 post-inf…

Fifteen cases of alveolar hydatid disease were treated with albendazole in the dosage of 20 mg/kg/d x 30 days for 12-60 courses. All cases were followed up 1-5 years (average 38 months) by ultrasonic scanning of liver and chest X-ray films. One patient whose hepatic lesion was converted into fibro-calcific after treatment was apparently cured. Twelve patients were symptomatically improved: jaundice (4 cases) and hemoptysis (2 cases) disappeared, with reduction in size of lesions in the liver and lung. Two patients in the late stage of disease with huge and extensive nodular masses in both lobe…

Medical or surgical therapy for subarachnoid or ventricular cysticercosis is a controversial issue. The authors report a patient with cysticercus larvae in both ventricular and subarachnoid locations, who was successfully treated with albendazole. Thus, medical therapy has a role in the treatment of these forms of neurocysticercosis.

BACKGROUND: Pathogenic intestinal protozoa infections are common in school-aged children in the developing world and they are frequently associated with malabsorption syndromes and gastrointestinal morbidity. Since diagnosis of these parasites is difficult, prevalence data on intestinal protozoa is scarce.
METHODS: We collected two stool samples from school-aged children on Pemba Island, Tanzania, as part of a randomized controlled trial before and 3 weeks after treatment with (i) single-dose albendazole (400 mg); (ii) single-dose nitazoxanide (1,000 mg); (iii) nitazoxanide-albendazole combin…

Background: Infections with soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) predominantly affect impoverished populations in tropical environments. The periodic administration of single dose benzimidazoles (i.e., albendazole, mebendazole) to at-risk individuals in endemic regions is at the center of STH control strategies. Given the low efficacy of these drugs against trichuriasis, investigation of drug combinations including moxidectin and ivermectin has recently been initiated, yet the identification of the best treatment option requires more research. We present the protocol for a trial investigating the…

Infection with Echinococcus multilocularis leads to the clinical manifestation of alveolar echinococcosis. This is characterized by the formation of alveolar liver tumours, which usually disintegrate necrotically in the course of the disease. Pseudocysts are formed. Especially in the early stages, curative resection followed by long-term treatment with albendazole is recommended. However, the majority of patients are not amenable to curative surgery. In these cases, albendazole therapy is the first-choice treatment. We present a rare case of albendazole-associated hepatitis in a patient with i…

INTRODUCTION: Drug induced acute toxic hepatitis can be idiosyncratic. Albendazole, a widely used broad spectrum antiparasitic drug is generally accepted as a safe drug. It may cause asymptomatic transient liver enzyme abnormalities but acute toxic hepatitis is very rare. Case Report : Herein, we present the case of 47 year old woman with recurrent acute toxic hepatitis after a single intake of albendazole in 2010 and 2014. The patient was presented with symptoms and findings of anorexia, vomiting and jaundice. For diagnosis, other acute hepatitis etiologies were excluded. Roussel Uclaf Causal…

PURPOSE: To describe the evolution of a series of cases of diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN) treated with albendazole.
METHODS: Interventional case series. The authors developed a non-randomized clinical trial protocol to investigate the clinical evolution of diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis cases treated with albendazole. According to protocol criteria up to now, six patients were selected that will be described separately.
RESULTS: Of the six studied patients, four presented the worm. All six patients treated with the antiparasitic drug showed improvement of visua…

BACKGROUND: Conflicting reports have caused controversy on whether cysticidal drugs modify the natural course of neurocysticercosis.
PURPOSE: To perform a meta-analysis of randomized trials assessing the effect of cysticidal drugs on neuroimaging and clinical outcomes of patients with neurocysticercosis.
DATA SOURCES: Search of MEDLINE, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and Literatura Latino-Americana y del Caribe en Ciencias de la Salud (LILACS) between 1979 and 2005. There were no language restrictions.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the therapeutic effects of long-term albendazole therapy in intraabdominal cystic echinococcosis.
METHODS: Fifteen patients with a total of 45 cysts were treated with albendazole with dosage regimen of 20 mg.kg-1.d-1 for an average of 2.5 years. Repeated CT and ultrasound scannings (US) were performed after the end of therapy. The duration of follow-up was 3.6 years on average. The number, size and morphology of cysts were compared before and after treatment.
RESULTS: The hydatid cysts were classified according to location and CT patterns into hepatic simple cysts, hepat…
