The iris of patients with exfoliation syndrome and senile cataracts were studied with a polarization microscope as well as histochemically. Amorphous substance stained by pH 1.0 alcian blue was observed in exfoliation syndrome on the posterior surface of the iris. This layer was thicker in exfoliation syndrome than in senile cataracts. The major component of this layer was verified as chondroitin sulphate and the minor one as hyaluronic acid. A new method is presented for functionalizing electrospun nanofibers with GAGs and growth factors by PEM deposition. Electrospun chitosan nanofibers, spun from trifluoroacetic acid and dichloromethane, were coated with PEMs, using the polysaccharides heparin and N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan. FGF-2 was adsorbed on the PEM-coated nanofibers. Nanofiber neutralization, PEM construction, and FGF-2 adsorption were monitored using FT-IR spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Alcian blue staining was used to confirm the presence of heparin. SEM was used to study nanofiber morphology.

Nonscarring lesions associated with lupus erythematosus (LE) include the diffuse alopecia associated with acute flares of systemic LE (SLE), frontal alopecia, and alopecia areata. We present a patient with a less often recognized lesion called papulonodular mucinosis or tumid LE who presented with nonscarring patches of alopecia, which clinically resembled alopecia areata. Histopathological examination revealed abundant Alcian blue positive material in the dermis, typical of tumid LE. We believe our patient demonstrates a fourth type of nonscarring alopecia that may occur in patients with LE.

The effect of gossypol, a polyphenolic compound, on developing Taenia taeniaeformis larvae in the rat liver was examined. Five groups of rats were used.
