Edible insects: chemical composition, protein digestibility, bioactive compounds, functional and thermal properties of different species.

The continued growth of the global population has increased the need for alternative food sources to reduce food insecurity. Entomophagy has emerged as a promising option due to the high reproductive rate, productivity, and efficient feed conversion of insects. This study evaluated five insect species with potential for human consumption, focusing on their nutritional composition, including macronutrients, fatty acids, minerals, bioactive compounds (carotenoids and phenolics), amino acid profiles, antioxidant activity, and technological properties. All species showed high protein contents, ran

The role of keto acids in the supportive treatment of children with chronic renal failure.

According to the hyperfiltration theory of renal diseases characterized by a decrease in the number of functional nephrons, increased arterial blood pressure, excessive protein intake in the diet, high levels of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P), secondary hyperparathyroidism, hypertriglyceridemia and/or hypercholesterolemia, proteinuria and metabolic acidosis are some factors that impair the prognosis of the disease. The amount of protein in the diet is the most important of these factors. A protein-restricted diet administered to patients with chronic renal failure results in the risk of inade

Amino acid requirements for growth of Chlamydia pneumoniae in cell cultures: growth enhancement by lysine or methionine depletion.

Amino acid requirements for growth of two isolates of Chlamydia pneumoniae were studied and compared with those for one strain of Chlamydia trachomatis in a HeLa 229 cell culture. It was shown that among 13 amino acids in Eagle minimum essential medium, C. pneumoniae required all amino acids except lysine. A true requirement for arginine, isoleucine, leucine, threonine, and valine could not be determined because depletion of 100% of these amino acids caused cell detachment. Consequently, a requirement for these amino acids was based on 90% depletion. C. trachomatis biovar trachoma required all

Metabolic and physiological responses of adzuki bean sprouts to led light qualities: yield-quality trade-offs and targeted spectral optimization.

This study elucidated the regulatory effects of LED light qualities on functional components and amino acids in two adzuki bean sprout cultivars, focusing on food chemistry-based quality control. Darkness and red light promoted hypocotyl elongation and edible yield, while blue light significantly enhanced the accumulation of vitamin E (58-fold higher than D), vitamin C, soluble protein, and flavonoids, as well as DPPH free radical scavenging capacity. Light quality treatment (especially blue light) significantly increased the content of total free amino acids and 17 amino acids (including esse

Increased glutamate and homocysteine and decreased glutamine levels in autism: a review and strategies for future studies of amino acids in autism.

There are many reports about the significant roles of some amino acids in neurobiology and treatment of autism. This is a critical review of amino acids levels in autism. No published review article about the level of amino acids in autism was found. The levels of glutamate and homocystein are increased in autism while the levels of glutamine and tryptophan are decreased. Findings regarding the plasma levels of taurine and lysine are controversial. The urinary levels of homocysteine and essential amino acids in both the untreated and treated autistic children are significantly less than those

Integrated targeted serum metabolomic profile and its association with gender, age, disease severity, and pattern identification in acne.

BACKGROUND: Westernized diet and nutritional metabolism are important in acne pathogenesis, especially in adult patients. However, clinical and basic data are lacking. Pattern identification (PI) is a tool that results in a diagnostic conclusion based on a cluster of concurrent symptoms and signs in traditional medicine. Acne can be classified by PI. However, whether the metabolomic profile differs according to the PI of acne is unknown. Metabolomic data would help clarify the pathogenesis of acne. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 40 healthy controls and 60 subjects wit

Unexpected Importance of Aromatic-Aliphatic and Aliphatic Side Chain-Backbone Interactions in the Stability of Amyloids.

The role of aromatic and nonaromatic amino acids in amyloid formation has been elucidated by calculating interaction energies between β-sheets in amyloid model systems using density functional theory (B3LYP-D3/6-31G*). The model systems were based on experimental crystal structures of two types of amyloids: (1) with aromatic amino acids, and (2) without aromatic amino acids. Data show that these two types of amyloids have similar interaction energies, supporting experimental findings that aromatic amino acids are not essential for amyloid formation. However, different factors contribute to the

Effect of insulin in conjunction with glucose, amino acids and potassium on net metabolism of glucose and amino acids in the goat mammary gland.

The hyperinsulinaemic euglycaemic insulin clamp technique was used to study the effect of insulin on the arterio-venous concentration differences of glucose and amino acids across the mammary gland in dairy goats. Insulin was given in conjunction with K to prevent insulin hypokalaemia. Appropriate amino acid infusion was used to blunt insulin-induced hypoaminoacidaemia or to create hyperaminoacidaemia and maintain this state under insulin treatment. Hyperaminoacidaemia alone only stimulated mammary leucine uptake but did not significantly modify the net metabolism of other amino acids and gluc

Understanding Dietary Protein Quality: Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Scores and Beyond.

Dietary protein quality refers to the capacity of a food to meet the human metabolic needs for essential amino acids (EAAs) and nitrogen. This is critical in low- and middle-income countries, where severe protein malnutrition occurs, and relevant in higher-income countries, where increasing dietary EAA intake may improve health and function. There are several methods to assess protein quality, each with different objectives. Chemical scoring metrics, like the digestible indispensable amino acid score, describe the EAA composition and digestibility of a protein source. However, these methods do

Evaluation of Protein Quality in Humans and Insights on Stable Isotope Approaches to Measure Digestibility - A Review.

The recent Food and Agricultural Organization/World Health Organization/United Nations University expert consultations on protein requirements and quality have emphasized the need for the new Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score (DIAAS), as a measure of protein quality. This requires human measurements of the true ileal digestibility of individual indispensable amino acids (IAAs) until the end of the small intestine. Digestibility is measured using standard oro-ileal balance methods, which can only be achieved by an invasive naso-ileal intubation in healthy participants or fistulation at

[Free amino acids in rat blood serum during A-hypovitaminosis].

A pool of free aminoacids of the blood serum has been studied in growing rats with a decreased retinol content in the liver tissue (to 5 g/g). The study shows a reliable drop in the concentrations of all essential aminoacids, except for phenylalanine. It is determined that the total amount of essential aminoacids decreases by 31%. At the same time concentrations of replaceable aminoacids increase, namely: glutamic acid and arginine--by 15.7%, ornithine and histidine--by 24%-45%, though proline concentration decreases abruptly by 31%. A disturbance in ultrastructural organization of microvilli

Michler's Ketone: A Novel Negative-Ion Matrix for Enhancing Amino Acid Detection and MALDI Tissue Imaging.

Amino acids are essential protein components and key bioactive molecules governing metabolism and signal transduction, playing vital roles in plant growth, physiological homeostasis, immunity, and stress adaptation. Negative-ion matrices for amino acid detection in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) remain underdeveloped, largely due to low ionization efficiency and strong background interference. To address this limitation, we developed a novel negative-ion MALDI matrix, Michler's ketone (MK), for efficient amino acid detection and imaging. MK ex

Measurement and modelling solubility of amino acids and peptides in aqueous 2-propanol solutions.

Amino acids and peptides are essential components in the biochemical industry. The final products are employed in a wide range of applications and are often synthesized by fermentation and purified in a complex downstream process. One possible separation step is using an additional solvent to lower the solubility of the desired product and, thus, promote the crystallization of the particular component. Therefore, it is crucial to have accurate knowledge of the solubility of these components. In this work, the solubilities of 20 proteinogenic amino acids and 21 peptides in aqueous 2-propanol so

Gamma-Ray-Induced Amino Acid Formation during Aqueous Alteration in Small Bodies: The Effects of Compositions of Starting Solutions.

Organic compounds, such as amino acids, are essential for the origin of life, and they may have been delivered to the prebiotic Earth from extra-terrestrial sources, such as carbonaceous chondrites. In the parent bodies of carbonaceous chondrites, the radioactive decays of short-lived radionuclides, such as 26Al, cause the melting of ice, and aqueous alteration occurs in the early stages of solar system formation. Many experimental studies have shown that complex organic matter, including amino acids and high-molecular-weight organic compounds, is produced by such hydrothermal processes. On th
