Transient global amnesia predisposed by rizatriptan and temazepam.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a perplexing neurological condition primarily affecting older adults, characterised by the acute onset of anterograde amnesia. Patients remain oriented to self and symptoms resolve within 24 hours. Before diagnosing TGA, conditions such as transient ischaemic attack and stroke must be excluded. We present a case of a woman in her 60's who experienced acute onset memory impairment and confusion after taking rizatriptan for migraine and temazepam for insomnia the previous night. Initially treated as an acute ischaemic stroke with tissue plasminogen activator, a

Incidence and Risk Factors of Transient Global Amnesia.

INTRODUCTION: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a spontaneously resolving, anterograde amnesia that lasts mostly <24 h and often occurs with retrograde amnesia. The etiology of TGA remains unclear, although in recent decades, many risk factors and preceding events have been identified. There are few up-to-date reports on the TGA incidence in Northern Europe. In this study, we report the incidence and risk factors associated with TGA in Finland. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included all patients with suspected TGA that were referred to Kuopio University Hospital (KUH) in 2017. The hospi

Impaired semantic memory during acute transient global amnesia.

As a clinical model of hippocampal dysfunction, transient global amnesia (TGA) causes reversible memory disturbance. While episodic memory deficits in TGA patients have been extensively described, data regarding semantic memory involvement are sparse and contradictory. We report impaired semantic fluency performance in 16 patients with hippocampal lesions on MRI during acute TGA compared to their performance one day later and to that of 20 healthy subjects. Our findings support the involvement of the hippocampus in semantic retrieval.

Risk factors predicting recurrence of transient global amnesia.

OBJECTIVE: To assess risk factors of transient global amnesia (TGA) recurrence. METHODS: Retrospective study of a case series of patients with the diagnosis of TGA in our neurology center in the last 8 years, identified through an anonymized database search. TGA was identified by applying Hodges and Warlow criteria. RESULTS: Seventy patients (70% female, average age 64.8 ± 7.8 years) were enrolled; mean follow-up was 16.5 months. More frequent co-morbidities were hypertension (50%), depression (25.7%), diabetes mellitus (17.1%), migraine (15.7%), and cerebrovascular disease (8.6%). Average T

Enhanced cortisol secretion in acute transient global amnesia.

INTRODUCTION: Stress-related transient inhibition of memory formation in the hippocampus has been hypothesized as one of the underlying pathomechanisms of transient global amnesia (TGA). TGA episodes, during which patients cannot encode and recall new information (anterograde amnesia affecting episodic long-term memory), are frequently preceded by a psychologically or physically stressful event. METHODS: We measured salivary cortisol during acute TGA in 14 patients, as well as cortisol day-profiles and the effect of experimental exposure to stress (using the socially evaluated cold pressor te

Cortical morphology in patients with transient global amnesia.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated alterations in cortical morphology in patients with transient global amnesia (TGA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Diagnoses of TGA occurred at our hospital. Evaluation involved a structured interview to obtain clinical information and a brain magnetic resonance imaging scan. We analyzed whole-brain T1-weighted MRI data using FreeSurfer 5.1. Measures of cortical morphology, such as thickness, surface area, volume, and curvature were compared between patients with TGA and healthy controls. We also quantified the correlations between clinical variables and each measure o

Reversible functional connectivity disturbances during transient global amnesia.

OBJECTIVE: Transient global amnesia (TGA), an abrupt occurrence of severe anterograde episodic amnesia accompanied by repetitive questioning, has been known for more than 50 years. Despite extensive research, there is no clear evidence for the underlying pathophysiological basis of TGA. Moreover, there is no neuroimaging method to evaluate TGA in real time. METHODS: Here we used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging recorded in 12 patients during the acute phase of TGA together with connectivity and cluster analyses to detect changes in the episodic memory network in TGA. [Usefulness of electroencephalograms in evaluating transient global amnesia].

INTRODUCTION: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a perfectly well defined clinical picture, but nevertheless even today its aetiology remains unknown. The three most widely accepted theories suggest it has a vascular origin, it is related with the pathophysiology of migraine or it is of an epileptiform nature. AIM: To analyse whether there is an electroencephalographic pattern that is consistently repeated in a series of electro-encephalograms (EEG) carried out on patients with TGA. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study consists in a retrospective analysis of a sample of 345 patients referred to ha

Transient global amnesia during a professional cello concert.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a great curiosity in medicine, the underlying pathophysiology of which remains under debate. When an episode occurs during the performance of a task requiring refined technical skills and an intense level of concentration such as a musical performance, it draws attention to the relationship between memory and performance. It also raises questions of access to procedural memory and other aspects of stored information. We encountered a renowned and highly proficient musician who was amnestic for a challenging concert.

Transient global amnesia: a brief review and update.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a transitory syndrome of memory loss, lasting less than 24 h. Although there are many known causes of transient amnesia, the syndrome of TGA remains of unknown etiology. Known causes of transient amnesia, theories of pathogenesis of TGA, and recommended evaluation and treatment are discussed.

[Transient global amnesia: a review. II. Neurocognitive analysis].

INTRODUCTION: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a neuropsychological syndrome characterized by an abrupt and temporary loss of capacity of creating new memories and whose etiology is still unclear. AIM. To review available knowledge about the status of different memory systems when TGA is suffered and when an amnesic episode is over. DEVELOPMENT: Two topics have been analysed: first, the current conception of memory as an entity with different systems and, second, how different memory systems are affected by TGA. Finally, levels of recovery of the different systems after a TGA episode are ana

Psychopathological factors, memory disorders and transient global amnesia.

BACKGROUND: Some studies have shown the presence of psychopathological disorders in transient global amnesia. AIMS: To determine whether transient global amnesia is associated with psychopathological disorders and to assess the influence of these psychopathological disorders on memory impairments. METHOD: Levels of anxiety and depression before and during transient global amnesia were rated. Memory performances were assessed by means of original episodic memory tasks and working memory tasks. These data were collected in 17 individuals observed during the very acute phase, 18 individuals exa
