Serial sections of 215 human embryos from Carnegie stages 6-17 were investigated, and 85 graphic reconstructions were prepared. It is proposed that neuromeres be defined as morphologically identifiable transverse subdivisions perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the embryonic brain and extending onto both sides of the body. It is proposed further that primary neuromeres be redefined as the early-appearing larger divisions of the open neural folds, and secondary neuromeres as the smaller subdivisions that are found both before and after closure of the neural tube. In the light of these def

The ancestral gymnophione (caecilian) became elongate and limbless early in its history. Further structural reduction, including loss of components, followed by redirection and occasionally cooption of remaining structures, particularly muscles and nerves, has evolved. Function may remain that of the ancestral condition, or may change dramatically. Examples include the evolution of the tentacle, the jaw-closing apparatus, and the hypobranchial musculature, including their innervation. 'Regressive' evolution has provided opportunity for new structural-functional relationships and for increased

Cortico-cortical connections of motor cortex in the marsupial brushtailed possum were traced by making injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) into two parts of motor cortex: the rostral agranular part which does not overlap somatosensory cortex, and the caudal part which does. Following injections in motor cortex, labelled neurons were observed on the same side of the brain within somatosensory areas 1 and 2 and in parietal cortex just caudal to S1, with most neurons in cortical Layers 2-4. Commissural connections were found in half of the experiments, with many labelled neurons in cortica

In order to explain the occurrence of malformed meniscus in man, dissections were carried out in various vertebrates; they revealed that menisci shaped like a plate, disc, or ring are physiological components of the knee joint in several vertebrates. Microscopic examinations of tissue sections through the knee joint of human embryos revealed that the meniscus develops from an intermediate mesodermal blastema, which has the shape of a thick plate in the early embryonic period. The occurrence of a malformed meniscus in man may be explained by persistence of a very early embryonic stage and also

Although Guillain-Barré syndrome was officially described in 1916, other cases had been reported earlier, such as some cases of Landry's paralysis. This year is the 250th anniversary of the birth of Georges Cuvier (1769-1832), one of the fathers of comparative anatomy and palaeontology: he died at age 63 from an unknown disease. By reading medical reports about his last days and hours, we conclude Cuvier died from a severe form of Guillain-Barré syndrome. Moreover, we think this observation could be the first complete report of acute polyradiculoneuropathy with pharyngeal-cervical-brachial ons

Mourasuchus is a Miocene alligatorid endemic to South America, and is represented by four species. Together with the closely related Purussaurus, it is a peculiar crocodylian taxon of neogene Caimaninae and one of the most bizarre forms among eusuchian crocodiles. The phylogenetic relationships between Mourasuchus species have not been explored, and detailed skull descriptions are scarce. The goal of this study is to provide new data on skull morphology and cranial recesses in Mourasuchus nativus, including a new tomography analysis (3D modeling). We observed that several diagnostic characters

Cranial nerve 0 or the terminal nerve (nervus terminalis: TN) refers to a nerve or in some cases possibly a complex of nerves that most likely derive from the olfactory placodes and relate the most anterior forebrain derivatives to nasal and olfactory structures. Such a nerve(s) has been observed in at least some stages of development in all major groups of vertebrates save myxinoids or hagfish. The phylogenetic variation of TN components is presented in some detail. The functions of TN components are not yet well identified, but some indications are that it is sensory but not chemosensory, co

The levator scapulae, rhomboideus, and serratus anterior muscles (as a group referred to the dorsal shoulder girdle muscles) and the scalenus muscles in mammals are usually innervated by cervical nerves. However, in koalas, the serratus anterior is additionally innervated by the lateral cutaneous branch of the first intercostal nerve. In cats, as in some other mammalian species, a part of the scalenus muscle (scalenus longus muscle) is innervated by the lateral cutaneous branches of the intercostal nerves. A precise comparison of the innervating nerves at the same segment in these two cases co

Jaw muscles are key components of the head and critical to testing hypotheses of soft-tissue homology, skull function, and evolution. Dinosaurs evolved an extraordinary diversity of cranial forms adapted to a variety of feeding behaviors. However, disparate evolutionary transformations in head shape and function among dinosaurs and their living relatives, birds and crocodylians, impair straightforward reconstructions of muscles, and other important cephalic soft tissues. This study presents the osteological correlates and inferred soft tissue anatomy of the jaw muscles and relevant neurovascul

The muscular system in the Pacific bluefin tuna Thunnus orientalis is studied in detail. For the first time, a complete description of the muscular anatomy of a thunnid is provided here. Eighty-two elements including subdivisions of components of the muscular system are identified. This is less than found in a basal perciform and two other investigated scombrid species, owing mainly to the absence or fusion of pectoral, pelvic and caudal fin muscles. The absence of elements of the basal perciform pattern was most prominent in the caudal fin, which includes only the flexor dorsalis, flexor vent

The spinal nerves in amphioxus are compared with the spinal and cranial nerves in lampreys. The dorsal spinal roots in amphioxus are similar to the mixed sensory and motor dorsal roots of many cranial nerves in lampreys but not to the purely sensory dorsal spinal roots in lampreys and gnathostomes. Likewise, cranial nerves V, VII, IX and X in lampreys, and all spinal nerves in amphioxus, lack a separate ventral motor root which is a constant feature of all spinal motor roots in lampreys and other vertebrates. Based on these similarities and differences, it is proposed that cranial and spinal n

The mesenchymal origin muscular tissues entailing some difficulties in the knowledge of certain muscles embryogeny, two methods are therefore applied: the comparison of the ontogenesis data with those of comparative anatomy and the use as a guide of the functional motor unit with which the muscle combines. In resorting to these methods necessary precautions are precisely defined. The origins of the concerned muscles are, at first, situated among those of the whole musculature subjected to will, which are of two types "somitic" and "branchial". The realities lying under these two misleading ter
