Unraveling gut-brain crosstalk: Lessons from Drosophila and other insect models.

Bidirectional communication between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system is emerging as a fundamental regulatory principle across animal phyla. Insects, the model organism Drosophila melanogaster in particular, have become powerful models for dissecting this crosstalk at cellular and molecular resolution. Recent advances reveal conserved enteroendocrine neuropeptide signaling pathways and neuronal circuits that regulate feeding behavior, metabolism, and physiological homeostasis. Here we review progress over the past decade, highlight mechanistic insights that are broadly

Wnt signaling and orthopedics, an overview.

Wnt signaling is a ubiquitous system for intercellular communication, with multiple functions during development and in homeostasis of the body. It comprises several ligands, receptors, and inhibitors. Some molecules, such as sclerostin, appear to have bone-specific functions, and can be targeted by potential drugs. Now, ongoing clinical trials are testing these drugs as treatments for osteoporosis. Animal studies have also suggested that these drugs can accelerate fracture healing and implant fixation. This brief overview focuses on currently available information on the effects of manipulati

Bitesize Biosecurity: A tool and framework for curating and summarising expert biosecurity advice for farmers using artificial intelligence.

BACKGROUND: Biosecurity practices mitigate disease risk on farms; however, adoption and consistent implementation remain variable across farmers. Improved communication of biosecurity information could increase uptake, reduce disease incidence and improve productivity, profitability and animal welfare. METHODS: This project developed a framework leveraging large language models (LLMs) to transform complex biosecurity guidance into accessible information for livestock farmers. The system condenses expert advice from publicly available UK government and veterinary advisory sources to generate m

Effects of vessel noise on beluga (Delphinapterus leucas) call type use: ultrasonic communication as an adaptation to noisy environments?

Animal vocalizations can evolve structural features as long-term adaptations to noisy environments. Using such signals, cetaceans could mitigate masking from vessel noise. This study investigates whether beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) use ultrasonic high-frequency burst pulse (HFBP) calls to communicate in noisy conditions. We identified HFBP calls in three populations: St Lawrence Estuary, Eastern High Arctic-Baffin Bay, and Western Hudson Bay. Focusing on the industrialized St Lawrence, we investigated the effects of vessel noise on HFBP call rates compared to other call types. Ultras

The effects of beta-endorphin: state change modification.

Beta-endorphin (β-END) is an opioid neuropeptide which has an important role in the development of hypotheses concerning the non-synaptic or paracrine communication of brain messages. This kind of communication between neurons has been designated volume transmission (VT) to differentiate it clearly from synaptic communication. VT occurs over short as well as long distances via the extracellular space in the brain, as well as via the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flowing through the ventricular spaces inside the brain and the arachnoid space surrounding the central nervous system (CNS). To understa

Characterization of Suspected Crimes against Companion Animals in Portugal.

Animal crimes are a widespread phenomenon with serious implications for animal welfare, individual well-being and for society in general. These crimes are universal and represent a major problem in human/animal interaction. In Portugal, current law 69/2014 criminalizes the mistreatment and abandonment of companion animals. This study characterizes forensic cases received at the Laboratory of Pathology of the National Institute of Agrarian and Veterinary Investigation (Vairão) since the enforcement of the aforementioned legislation. A retrospective study was carried out based on the consult of

Addressing the problem of pet overpopulation: the experience of New Hanover County Animal Control Services.

Pet overpopulation is a problem for humans not only because of the increased rabies exposure risk but also because it puts a strain on animal control agencies, which must care for, house, and often euthanize the unwanted animals. New Hanover County, North Carolina, Animal Control Services saw the need to control this problem and developed a plan to diminish the number of unwanted companion animals in its community. With the help of training through the UNC Management Academy for Public Health, they created a successful business plan to build an on-site spay/neuter facility. The facility began

Reduction of tungiasis prevalence, intensity, and morbidity during a two-year long community-based tungiasis control project in a hyperendemic region in Karamoja, Uganda.

Tungiasis is a widespread and debilitating zoonotic Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD). Manual extraction of the sand fleas with non-sterile sharp instruments is the most common but unsafe treatment method in affected communities. Topical application of a dimeticone oil formula (NYDA) has previously been shown to be a safe and effective method of killing embedded sand fleas. The objective of this study was to evaluate a two-year long humanitarian One Health tungiasis control project in 17 villages in Napak district, Karamoja region, Northeastern Uganda. The community-based intervention included

Investigations on the biology, epidemiology, pathology, and control of Tunga penetrans in Brazil: VII. The importance of animal reservoirs for human infestation.

In Brazil tungiasis is endemic in many resource-poor communities, where various domestic and sylvatic animals act as reservoirs for this zoonosis. To determine the role of animal reservoirs in human tungiasis, a cross-sectional study was performed in a traditional fishing community in northeast Brazil. The human and the animal populations were examined for the presence of embedded sand fleas and the prevalence and the intensity of infestation were correlated. The overall prevalence of tungiasis in humans was 39% (95% CI 34-43%). Of six mammal species present in the village, only cats and dogs

Community-based symptom reporting among agro-pastoralists and their livestock in Chad in a One Health approach.

One Health Syndromic Surveillance has a high potential for detecting early epidemiological events in remote and hard-to-reach populations. Chadian pastoralists living close to their animals and being socio-economically unprivileged have an increased risk for zoonosis exposure. Engaging communities in disease surveillance could also strengthen preparedness capacities for outbreaks in rural Chad. This study describes a retrospective cross-sectional survey that collected data on clinical symptoms reported in people and livestock in Chadian agro-pastoral communities. In January-February 2018, inte

A rather dry subject; investigating the study of arid-associated microbial communities.

Almost one third of Earth's land surface is arid, with deserts alone covering more than 46 million square kilometres. Nearly 2.1 billion people inhabit deserts or drylands and these regions are also home to a great diversity of plant and animal species including many that are unique to them. Aridity is a multifaceted environmental stress combining a lack of water with limited food availability and typically extremes of temperature, impacting animal species across the planet from polar cold valleys, to Andean deserts and the Sahara. These harsh environments are also home to diverse microbial co

Effects of amphetamine on pro-social ultrasonic communication in juvenile rats: Implications for mania models.

Communication is the act of information transfer between sender and receiver. In rats, vocal communication can be studied through ultrasonic vocalizations (USV). 50-kHz USV occur in appetitive situations, most notably juvenile play, likely expressing the sender׳s positive affective state. Such appetitive 50-kHz USV serve important pro-social communicative functions and elicit social exploratory and approach behavior in the receiver. Emission of 50-kHz USV can be induced pharmacologically by the administration of psychostimulant drugs, such as amphetamine. However, it is unknown whether ampheta

Evaluation of cerebrospinal fluid production in the development of communicating hydrocephalus.

Diminished absorption of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is the most common cause of communicating hydrocephalus. Soon after the absorptive capacity is decreased, the CSF pressure increases, producing ventricular enlargement if the process is not halted. CSF production was measured by ventriculo-cisternal perfusion during and after the production of communicating hydrocephalus, using an atraumatic animal model. Animals with chronic hydrocephalus and normal pressure had normal CSF production. CSF production tended to be lower in animals with increased pressure. When CSF absorption is compromised, dec

Evaluating the concentrations of total mercury, methylmercury, selenium, and selenium:mercury molar ratios in traditional foods of the Bigstone Cree in Alberta, Canada.

Traditional foods provide nutritional, social, and economic benefits for Indigenous communities; however, anthropogenic activities have raised concerns about mercury (Hg), especially methylmercury (MeHg), in these foods. This issue may be of particular concern for communities near large industrial activities, including the Bigstone Cree Nation adjacent to the Athabasca oil sands region, Canada. This community-led study sought to assess variation in THg and MeHg concentrations among traditional food types (plants or animals), species, and tissues (muscles, organs), and variation in concentratio

One Health investigation and response to a nationwide outbreak of Rift Valley fever in Rwanda - March to December 2022.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an emerging zoonotic mosquito-borne disease caused by Rift Valley Fever virus (RVFV), affecting both humans and animals. It is endemic to Rwanda and Tanzania and Uganda which are adjacent countries, with possible transboundary transmissions. Despite the various outbreak reports in Rwanda since 2012, information on the intensity and spread of these outbreaks and their management is scarce. We describe the 2022 outbreak that happened in Rwanda and provide insights into the One Health response implemented during the outbreak. There were no human cases officially reporte
