Brucellosis: Evolution and expected comeback.

Brucellosis is a serious infectious disease which causes great direct and indirect economic loses for animal holders worldwide such as the reduction of milk and meat production through abortions/culling of positive reactors, the expense of disease control/eradication and farmers compensation. Although the disease was eradicated from most of the industrial countries, it remains one of the most common zoonotic diseases in developing countries being responsible for more than 500,000 new cases yearly. Brucella is considered to be a bioterrorism organism due to its low infectious doses (10-100 bact

Stray dog trade fuelled by dog meat consumption as a risk factor for rabies infection in Calabar, southern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a preventable zoonosis with the highest case fatality of any disease in the world. In the developing world, it is transmitted mainly by dog bites. In parts of southern Nigeria, dog meat is a delicacy. OBJECTIVE: To highlight trade in stray dogs as a major risk factor for rabies in animals and humans in south-south Nigeria. METHOD: Patients admitted into the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) with a diagnosis of rabies between July and October 2012 were analysed for risk factors, post exposure prophylaxis (PEP), health seeking behaviour and outcome. Focused g

Epidemiological Study Related to the First Outbreak of Ovine Anaplasmosis in Spain.

Ovine anaplasmosis is a vector-borne disease caused by Anaplasma ovis and mainly transmitted through tick bites. In Spain, the first outbreak of ovine anaplasmosis occurred in 2014. An epidemiological study in fifty-one farms was carried out associated with this outbreak in the affected geographical area. An epidemiological questionnaire was performed. In addition, whole blood samples were taken for molecular analysis in 47 of these farms to determine the prevalence of infection of Anaplasma ovis. A. ovis was present in 44 out of 47 PCR-analysed farms (93.6%). However, only 40.4% of the studie

Cattle breed-variation in infestation by the horn fly Haematobia irritans.

A study was carried out to assess the resistance of pure and cross-bred groups of cattle to the horn fly Haematobia irritans (Linnaeus) (Diptera: Muscidae) in northern Argentina. Pure-bred cattle were Criolla, Iberian Bos taurus Linnaeus (Artiodactyla: Bovidae) and Nellore, Bos indicus Linnaeus (Artiodactyla: Bovidae). Cross-bred cattle were Hereford, British B. taurus (34%) X Nellore (66%) and Hereford (66%) X Nellore (34%). All were heifers and animals were maintained in two groups, each containing a mixture of pure and cross-breeds. The lowest fly numbers were found on Criolla heifers and t

[Effect of ketosis on the reproductive process in high-yield cows].

Studies were carried out with a total of 40 ketosis-affected cows and 40 normal (control) cows. It was found that with the diseased animals the blood level of sugar was lowered by 45 per cent, that of total protein--by 24 per cent, that of carotene and vitamin A--by more than twice, and that of inorganic phosphorus--by 20 per cent as against the blood indices with the control cows. In the same period the content of ketone bodies in the blood of ths affected cows increased 5 times, and in the urine it rose 6 times. With cows that had ketosis the cases of dystocia and retained placenta were 5 ti

The effect of storage conditions on samples for the evaluation of copper status in blesbok (Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi).

Investigaltions to determine the effect of sample storage on the concentration of copper in liver tissue and on the activity of erythrocyte superoxide dismutase were undertaken in preparation for a study of blesbok (Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi) that were suspected to be suffering from copper deficiency. Two liver samples were collected from each of 20 culled blesbok in a manner that simulated the collection of biopsies from the live animal. These samples were stored either in 10% formalin or frozen at -20 degrees C until analysed 4 1/2 months later. The effect of different methods of sample

Cost-effective control strategies for animal and zoonotic diseases in pastoralist populations.

Animal diseases and zoonoses abound among pastoralist livestock, which is composed of cattle, sheep, goats, yak, camels, llamas, reindeer, horses and donkeys. There is endemic and, periodically, epidemic transmission of highly contagious viral and bacterial diseases in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Pastoralist livestock is often multiparasitised with endo- and ectoparasites, as well as being affected by vectorborne viral and protozoal diseases. Pastoral livestock can be a reservoir of such diseases and can also, conversely, be at risk from exposure to wildlife reservoirs. Public and private

Evaluation of multifactorial digestive disorders in a dairy herd at different stages of lactation.

The manager of a large dairy herd (total confinement, total mixed ration feeding, 10130 kg milk sold per cow and year) requested a workup of a digestive disorder problem that had been ongoing for several years. The cows were at all stages of lactation, and the incidence proportion (events/100 cows at risk) of digestive disorders was approximately 5 to 10%. The clinical picture included an abnormal demeanor of varying severity and signs that differed among the cows. The latter included decreased milk production and physical activity, low body condition score, abnormal rumen motility and stratif

Control of canine rabies in developing countries: key features and animal welfare implications.

Over 90% of human deaths from rabies worldwide are caused by dog bites. Mass vaccination, along with the effective control of dog populations, has been used successfully in industrialised countries to control this disease. A lower success rate in developing countries is due to a number of factors, including vaccination campaigns that do not cover a sufficient number of animals or reach all communities, and a wide biodiversity that increases the number of reservoirs of the rabies virus. Educational programmes are needed, which focus on the commitment involved when acquiring a domestic animal, s

Pig carcass decomposition dynamics: Insights into carcass disposal for emergency animal disease management.

Australia is free from many economically devastating emergency animal diseases (EADs) that threaten livestock production in neighbouring countries. In Australia, an important consideration for EAD control is managing susceptible feral animal populations, especially in remote and inaccessible areas where carcass disposal poses considerable logistical challenges. One proposed solution is to utilise natural decomposition above ground through the 'destroy and let lie' (D&LL) method, relying on post-mortem changes in carcass temperature and pH to inactivate the EAD agent. We investigated temperatur

Efficacy data of halogenated phenazine and quinoline agents and an NH125 analogue to veterinary mycoplasmas.

BACKGROUND: Mycoplasmas primarily cause respiratory or urogenital tract infections impacting avian, bovine, canine, caprine, murine, and reptilian hosts. In animal husbandry, mycoplasmas cause reduced feed-conversion, decreased egg production, arthritis, hypogalactia or agalactia, increased condemnations, culling, and mortality in some cases. Antibiotics reduce transmission and mitigate clinical signs; however, concerning levels of antibiotic resistance in Mycoplasma gallisepticum and M. capricolum isolates exist. To address these issues, we evaluated the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC

Discovery of host genetic factors through multi-locus GWAS against toxoplasmosis in sheep: addressing one health perspectives.

Toxoplasma gondii stands as one of the most successful pathogens, capable of infecting nearly all warm-blooded species. It is estimated that up to 50% of human population might harbor Toxoplasmosis infections. One of the primary transmission routes is the consumption of tissue cysts from infected farm animals used for food production. Thus, controlling Toxoplasmosis in farm animals is of vital importance for human health and food safety. Selective breeding in farm animals, where available, could complement classical control measures like biosecurity measures, vaccination, and test-and-cull met

Positive cases of bovine genital campylobacteriosis and bovine trichomonosis in the eradication program of La Pampa, Argentina: 2008-2021.

Bovine genital campylobacteriosis, caused by the gram-negative bacteria Campylobacter fetus venerealis, and bovine trichomonosis, caused by the parasite protozoan Tritrichomonas foetus, are venereal diseases that occur with long intercalving periods and abortion. The control of both diseases relies on microbiological testing and culling infected bulls. Vaccination and antibiotic treatment may help in controlling campylobacteriosis but are not recommended for trichomonosis control. Several regions of the world have active control programs for trichomonosis, not campylobacteriosis. In Argentina,

The production performance of imported Friesian cattle under heavy Trypanosoma challenge in a rain forest zone of Nigeria.

The productivity of 76 newly imported pregnant Friesian cattle and two bulls under heavy trypanosome challenge in the rain forest belt of Nigeria is reported. At the first visit in August 1989 and within 7 months of arrival of the heifers, the herd population had reduced by 26 (33.3%) as a result of deaths (six animals) and culls/salvages (20). The surviving 52 animals were generally in poor health with classical symptoms of trypanosomiasis. Thirty-one (40.8%) of the pregnancies were unsuccessful because of abortions (13 animals), premature births (seven), embryonic deaths (five) and death of

[The complex etiology of epidemic diseases in calves on large-capacity farms and their clinical and epizootic characteristics].

It is not easy to exactly diagnose the etiology of the mass infections of new-born calves on large farms where considerable losses are suffered. On the basis of the complex epizootological, clinical and laboratory examination in four large calf-rearing facilities, rotaviruses, coronaviruses, the infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus and the bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) virus, and in some cases also the enteropathogenic E. coli, were found to be etiologically involved in the mass rise of diarrhoea, complicated by respiratory symptoms already during the first days after birth. The clinic

The Effect of Lamb Vaccination Against Echinococcosis on the Scale of Livestock Farming in Northwestern China.

Echinococcosis (also known as 'hydatidosis' or 'hydatid disease') is a severe zoonotic disease that poses threats to human and animal health and significantly impacts livestock production, which may lead to declines in both the quantity and quality of animal products and result in economic losses. Lamb vaccination against echinococcosis is considered an effective method for controlling the transmission of echinococcosis in the intermediate host-sheep, thereby disrupting the disease's transmission chain, and thus a crucial strategy for preventing and controlling echinococcosis. Based on field s

Overview of Slovenian Control Programmes for Cattle Diseases Not Regulated by the European Union.

The European Union (EU) regulates the control of cattle diseases listed in categories A and B of the Animal Health Law (AHL). However, the control of other cattle diseases that have no, or limited EU regulation, is left to each member state. Slovenia has five control programmes (CPs) for non-EU regulated cattle diseases: bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD), infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL), bluetongue and anthrax. Two (IBR and BVD) are voluntary and the others (EBL, anthrax and bluetongue) are compulsory. The three compulsory CPs are funded by the government. Al

Buffaloed in Brandenburg: Germany's first brush with foot-and-mouth disease after four decades of freedom.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus is one of the most feared and most consequential pathogens of livestock worldwide. It can be spread rapidly by the transboundary movement of animals, animal products, and by-products. In January 2025, Germany detected its first FMD outbreak since 1988 in extensively reared water buffalo on a small farm in the state of Brandenburg, directly outside Berlin, the federal capital. Immediate control measures including a standstill for movements of susceptible animals and pre-emptive culling were implemented by the veterinary authorities. Whole-genome sequencing ide
