Conditioned place preference induced by sexual interaction in female rats.

The present study was undertaken to establish whether the conditioned place preference paradigm can be utilized to investigate and elucidate the neuroendocrine basis of the appetitive elements of female sexual behavior. Females were exposed to a male with which copulation occurred in a distinctive compartment of the place preference apparatus and did not receive an incentive in the alternative compartment. After six pairings to each compartment a place preference test was conducted. Both estradiol benzoate and estradiol benzoate plus progesterone treated, ovariectomized females showed a prefer

An all 2D bio-inspired gustatory circuit for mimicking physiology and psychology of feeding behavior.

Animal behavior involves complex interactions between physiology and psychology. However, most AI systems neglect psychological factors in decision-making due to a limited understanding of the physiological-psychological connection at the neuronal level. Recent advancements in brain imaging and genetics have uncovered specific neural circuits that regulate behaviors like feeding. By developing neuro-mimetic circuits that incorporate both physiology and psychology, a new emotional-AI paradigm can be established that bridges the gap between humans and machines. This study presents a bio-inspired

The effect of β-caryophyllene on food addiction and its related behaviors: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

Food addiction (FA) is a psychological construct that may be involved in the etiology of obesity. The cannabinoid system is involved in the addictive-like food preferences by acting on the dopaminergic pathway of the brain. β-caryophyllene is a dietary cannabinoid that is a cannabinoid type 2 (CB2) receptor agonist. This study explored the impacts of β-caryophyllene supplementation on eating behavior, appetite, mental health, anthropometric parameters, body composition, and some hormones related to appetite in women with obesity diagnosed with FA. Women with obesity and FA, diagnosed by the Ya

Effects of mindfulness and mindful eating on food intake and appetite: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Mindfulness, mindful eating and intuitive eating practices are associated with healthier eating and lower body weight. However, experimental research in this area has shown mixed effects on food intake and theoretical accounts are underdeveloped. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the effect of mindfulness, mindful eating and intuitive eating interventions on food intake and appetite (hunger and fullness) in adults and children and compare effects across different subgroups to investigate potential mechanisms of action. Five electronic databases (PsycINFO, MEDLINE, EMBAS

Behavioural satiety sequence (BSS): separating wheat from chaff in the behavioural pharmacology of appetite.

The history of anti-obesity drug development is far from glorious, with transient magic bullets and only a handful of agents currently licensed for clinical use. In view of recent progress in our understanding of the multiplicity of signalling pathways involved in appetite regulation, and the resultant deluge of reports on the anorectic efficacy of novel therapies, it seems timely to stress the need to differentiate treatments that suppress intake by primary means from those that only indirectly achieve this endpoint. The current article reviews the conceptual history of the behavioural satiet

Effect of anorexic drugs on food intake and the micro-structure of eating in human subjects.

Human volunteer subjects of normal weight received oral doses of (+)amphetamine (10 mg) or (+/-)fenfluramine (30 mg and 60 mg) together with a placebo control according to a within-subjects design. The effects of these treatments were monitored by measuring food intake in a test meal, subjective ratings of hunger motivation and the micro-structure of eating behaviour abstracted from videotaped recordings of the test meal. Various measures of the rate of feeding were computed from these recordings. Amphetamine and fenfluramine (60 mg) showed generally similar effects on food intake and on the s

Elevated circulating acylated and total ghrelin concentrations along with reduced appetite scores in infants with failure to thrive.

Failure to thrive (FTT) is a term used to describe inadequate growth in infants. The immediate cause is undernutrition. Ghrelin is a potent orexigenic hormone that induces a positive energy balance and enhances appetite. There is no information regarding the possible role of ghrelin in infants with FTT. The aim of this study was 2-fold: 1) to examine circulating ghrelin levels in FTT infants, compared with those of normally growing infants; and 2) to evaluate appetitive behaviors in the two groups. Plasma acylated and total ghrelin concentrations were measured in nine FTT and five normally gro…

Sex Differences in Nicotine Enhancement of Conditioned Place Avoidance Driven by Footshock in Male and Female Rats.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use is driven by nicotine, which can enhance the ability of non-nicotine stimuli, including aversive stimuli, to alter behavior. Sex differences exist in the reinforcement enhancement properties of nicotine, but the degree to which this extends to nicotine's ability to enhance behavior driven by aversive stimuli is unclear. AIMS AND METHODS: The current study used adult male and female Sprague-Dawley rats to explore sex differences in nicotine enhancement of footshock (FS)-conditioned place avoidance. FS-conditioned and control rats were tested for conditioned avoidance

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation above the Medial Prefrontal Cortex Facilitates Decision-Making following Periods of Low Outcome Controllability.

Recent studies suggest that choice behavior in reinforcement learning tasks is shaped by the level of outcome controllability. In particular, Pavlovian bias (PB) seems to be enhanced under low levels of control, manifesting in approach tendencies toward rewards and response inhibition when facing potential losses. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) has been implicated both in evaluating outcome controllability and in the recruitment of cognitive control (CC) to suppress maladaptive PB during reinforcement learning. The current study tested whether high-definition transcranial direct current s

Precursor amino acid concentrations in normal weight bulimics and normal controls.

1. CNS serotonergic neurotransmission has been implicated in the control of appetitive behavior. The ratio of plasma tryptophan (TRP) to other large neutral amino acids (LNAA) is believed to regulate CNS serotonin (5-HT) synthesis. 2. After an overnight fast, plasma TRP ratios were determined in 23 normal weight bulimics and 7 normal controls. 3. All subjects were assessed for mood disorder using a SADS interview and Beck Depression ratings. 4. There was no significant difference in TRP ratios between bulimics and normal controls. TRP ratios in depressed bulimics were not significantly differe…

Enantioselective behavioral effects of threo-methylphenidate in rats.

The relative potency of d- and l-threo-methylphenidate (d-MPH and l-MPH) was evaluated using three behavioral paradigms for rats: Responding maintained by a fixed-interval schedule of reinforcement (FI), responding maintained by a concurrent variable-interval schedule of reinforcement (Conc VI VI), and consumption of sweetened condensed milk during a 15-min free-access period. In each case the potency of the d-MPH enantiomer greatly exceeded that of the l-MPH enantiomer. Temporal control of responding was reduced (FI) choice responding was equalized for most rats (Conc VI VI), and milk consump

The role of the dorsal striatum in a mouse model for fragile X syndrome: Behavioral and dendritic spine assessment.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS), a leading monogenic cause of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), typically occurs as the result of a mutation silencing the Fmr1 gene, preventing production of the fragile X messenger ribonucleoprotein (FMRP). FXS is characterized, in part, by hyperactivity, impaired behavioral flexibility, and the development of repetitive, or stereotyped, behaviors. While these phenotypes are influenced by striatal activity, few studies have examined FXS or FMRP in the context of striatal function. Here, we report enhanced repetitive behaviors in Fmr1 knockout (KO) compared to wild ty

Thirst and sodium appetite after colloid treatment in rats with septal lesions.

Previous experiments in which angiotensin II (AII) and mineralocorticoids were administered to rats have suggested that these hormones play a natural role in mediating thirst and sodium appetite. This hypothesis was examined by making use of rats with septal lesions, which have an apparent sensitivity to the central effects of AII, and studying their behavioral response to subcutaneous colloid treatment, which produces hypovolemia and thereby stimulates the secretions of renin and aldosterone. The induced thirst and sodium appetite both were markedly enhanced in the brain-damaged animals. Howe
