BACKGROUND: Ankle sprains account for a large proportion of injuries presenting to both United States (US) emergency departments (EDs) as well as high school (HS) and collegiate school athletic training settings. The epidemiologic differences across these settings by both sport and diagnosis have not been well differentiated. Ankle injury data from 3 national surveillance datasets. Athletic training setting data from the National High School Sports-Related Injury Surveillance System and the National Collegiate Athletic Association Injury Surveillance Program was from academic years 2009/10 thr

We examined perceived risk of future sports injury and athlete burnout among uninjured adolescent athletes. Uninjured high school athlete participants completed the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ) and a questionnaire assessing attitudes toward likelihood of sustaining a future sport-related injury. We compared ABQ responses between injury risk perception groups: those who expected injury versus those who did not. Half of the participants reported a somewhat/very high likelihood of future sport-related injury (n = 98; 52% female; age = 15.3 ± 1.9 years), while the other half reported it was

BACKGROUND: The menstrual cycle (MC) is characterized by periodic fluctuations in estradiol and progesterone that may influence exercise metabolism, neuromuscular function, connective-tissue properties, menstrual symptom burden, recovery, and musculoskeletal injury susceptibility in female athletes. However, inconsistent findings and substantial inter- and intraindividual variability have prevented the development of universally applicable practical guidance.
OBJECTIVE: This narrative review aimed to synthesize current evidence on the associations of MC-related hormonal fluctuations with athl

Running-related injuries (RRI) may result from accumulated microtrauma caused by combinations of high load magnitudes (vertical ground reaction forces; vGRFs) and numbers (strides). Yet relationships between vGRF and RRI remain unclear - potentially because previous research has largely been constrained to collecting vGRFs in laboratory settings and ignoring relationships between RRI and stride number. In this preliminary proof-of-concept study, we addressed these constraints: Over a 60-day period, each time collegiate athletes (n = 9) ran they wore a hip-mounted activity monitor that collecte

INTRODUCTION: Injuries sustained during basic combat training (BCT) result in large economic costs to the U.S. Army. The inclusion of athletic trainers (ATs) in other military branches has reduced Troop Medical Clinic (TMC) referrals. However, the inclusion of ATs during BCT has yet to be studied. The purpose of this study was to describe the frequency and nature of sick call visits during BCT and determine how the presence of an AT affects referrals to the TMC.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted at the Fort Jackson Army Training Center for one calendar year. Sold

Adductor injuries represent a notable musculoskeletal burden among athletes accounting for half of acute hip injuries in soccer and nearly one quarter in professional basketball. The pyramidalis-anterior pubic ligament-adductor longus complex represents a critical anatomic concept for understanding injury patterns with the adductor longus most injured. Clinical evaluation follows the Doha agreement classification, emphasizing adductor tenderness and pain on resisted adduction testing to differentiate adductor-related groin pain from other etiologies. Magnetic resonance imaging provides compreh
