Acquired amusia after a right middle cerebral artery infarction - a case study.

A 62-year-old musician-MM-developed amusia after a right middle-cerebral-artery infarction. Initially, MM showed melodic deficits while discriminating pitch-related differences in melodies, musical memory problems, and impaired sensitivity to tonal structures, but normal pitch discrimination and spectral resolution thresholds, and normal cognitive and language abilities. His rhythmic processing was intact when pitch variations were removed. After 3 months, MM showed a large improvement in his sensitivity to tonality, but persistent melodic deficits and a decline in perceiving the metric struct

A case of amusia with beat deafness and apraxia of speech.

After experiencing two ischemic brain attacks, a 40-year-old, right-handed, female amateur cello player developed apraxia of speech (AOS) and amusia, especially on the aspect of the beat. Her tempo became gradually faster, but while playing, she could not recognize that. When she listened to her own recorded performances, she could identify the differences immediately and precisely. Brain MRI showed lesions in the right superior temporal lobe, temporal plate, and right and left precentral gyri. Neuromusicological assessments revealed severe beat impairment and moderate pitch impairment. We dia

Consonance Perception in Congenital Amusia: Behavioral and Brain Responses to Harmonicity and Beating Cues.

Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in the perception and production of music, including the perception of consonance and dissonance, or the judgment of certain combinations of pitches as more pleasant than others. Two perceptual cues for dissonance are inharmonicity (the lack of a common fundamental frequency between components) and beating (amplitude fluctuations produced by close, interacting frequency components). Amusic individuals have previously been reported to be insensitive to inharmonicity, but to exhibit normal sensitivity to beats. In t

Comorbidity and cognitive overlap between developmental dyslexia and congenital amusia in children.

Developmental dyslexia and congenital amusia are two specific neurodevelopmental disorders that affect reading and music perception, respectively. Similarities at perceptual, cognitive, and anatomical levels raise the possibility that a common factor is at play in their emergence, albeit in different domains. However, little consideration has been given to what extent they can co-occur. A first adult study suggested a 30% amusia rate in dyslexia and a 25% dyslexia rate in amusia (Couvignou et al., Cognitive Neuropsychology 2019). We present newly acquired data from 38 dyslexic and 38 typically

The Effect of Varying Test Administration and Scoring Procedures on Three Tests of (Central) Auditory Processing Disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is currently no widely accepted objective method used to identify (central) auditory processing disorder ([C]APD). Audiologists often rely on behavioral test methods to diagnose (C)APD, which can be highly subjective. This is problematic in light of relevant literature that has reported a lack of adequate graduate-level preparation related to (C)APD. This is further complicated when exacerbated by the use of inconsistent test procedures from those used to standardize tests of (C)APD, resulting in higher test variability. The consequences of modifying test administration and s

Synaesthesia lost and found: two cases of person- and music-colour synaesthesia.

Synaesthesia is a developmental condition involving cross-communication between sensory modalities or substreams whereby an inducer (e.g. a sound) automatically evokes a concurrent percept in another modality (e.g. a colour). Whether this condition arises due to atypical structural connectivity (e.g., between normally unconnected cortical areas) or altered neurochemistry remains a central question. We report the exceptional cases of two synaesthetes - subjects AB and CD - both of whom experience coloured auras around individuals, as well as coloured perceptions in response to music. Both subje

The Effect of Visual Sort and Rate Versus Visual Analog Scales on the Reliability of Judgments of Dysphonia.

Purpose The reliability of auditory-perceptual judgments between listeners is a long-standing problem in the assessment of voice disorders. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a relatively novel experimental scaling method, called visual sort and rate (VSR), yielded stronger reliability than the more frequently used method of visual analog scales (VAS) for ratings of overall severity (OS) and breathiness (BR) in speakers with voicedisorders. Method Fifty speech samples were selected from a database of speakers with voice disorders. Twenty-two inexperienced listeners provided rat

Auditory acuity and musical ability in young adults with high schizotypal traits.

BACKGROUND: Despite auditory cognition dysfunction being consistently found in people with schizophrenia, the evidence from non-clinical individuals with schizotypy is rare and inconsistent. No studies thus far have comprehensively assessed the association among auditory perception, musical cognition, and schizotypy in non-clinical samples. AIM: We aimed to explore abnormalities in auditory skills, from basic perception to musical ability, among individuals with schizotypal traits. METHOD: An extreme-group design was adopted. Sixty-six participants from the schizotypy and control groups were

Central auditory processing in children with sickle cell disease.

The complexity of sickle cell disease (SCD) goes beyond hematological manifestations, affecting different organs and systems, including auditory system. We aimed to assess Central Auditory Processing (CAP) abilities in children with SCD as well as to detect risk factors for Auditory Processing Disorders (APD) in children with SCD. A diagnostic observational cross sectional study that included thirty-three patients aged 6-16 years with a confirmed diagnosis of SCD. Demographic, clinical and laboratory characteristics were collected. Audiological testing included tympanometry, pure tone audiomet

Behavioral and Electrophysiological Assessment of Central Auditory Processing in Individuals With Sickle Cell Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell anemia has a genetic origin characterized by an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. The nervous system may be subject to vaso-occlusion and, consequently, affect the proper functioning of the central portion of hearing. OBJECTIVE: To assess central auditory skills and analyze short- and long-latency auditory evoked potentials in children with sickle cell disease. METHODS: Cross-sectional study. All children had normal hearing thresholds, and their central auditory processing underwent behavioral assessment with a battery of tests involving dichotic and monotic

Acoustic reflex abnormalities in behaviorally disturbed and language delayed children.

Contralateral and ipsilateral acoustic reflex thresholds were measured in 62 subjects referred for suspected delays in development of language, learning disabilities, or disorders of auditory processing, with normal peripheral hearing thresholds and normal tympanometry. Thirty-two percent of the subjects in this study showed abnormal contralateral and ipsilateral acoustic reflex thresholds. Both contralateral and ipsilateral acoustic reflex thresholds were involved when subjects showed abnormal reflex thresholds. Although a high percentage of abnormal acoustic reflexes occurred in this populat

Temporal processing deficits in Hebrew speaking children with reading disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to assess to what extent specific reading disabilities and poor phonologic processing in children who read Hebrew, a primarily consonant orthography, are related to central auditory temporal processing deficits (TPDs).Twenty-four Hebrew-speaking children (ages 10-13) with and without reading disabilities were asked to discriminate auditorily pairs of syllables (/ba/ vs. /pa/) that differ by voice onset time (VOT) only. Two paradigms were used, 1 with a short interstimulus interval (ISI) (50 ms) and 1 with a long ISI (500 ms). Event-related potentials (ERPs) were m

Temporal resolution in children: comparing normal hearing, conductive hearing loss and auditory processing disorder.

UNLABELLED: Temporal resolution is essential to speech acoustic perception. It may be altered in subjects with auditory disorders, thus impairing the development of spoken and written language. AIM: The goal was to compare temporal resolution of children with normal hearing, with those bearing conductive hearing loss and auditory processing disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample had 31 children, between 7 and 10 years of age, broken down into three groups: G1: 12 subjects with normal hearing; G2: 7 with conductive hearing loss and G3: 12 subjects with auditory processing disorders. Modulation of auditory temporal processing, speech in noise perception, auditory-verbal memory, and reading efficiency by anodal tDCS in children with dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is prevalent in children. It is estimated that 30-50% of individuals diagnosed with dyslexia also manifest an auditory perceptual deficit characteristic of auditory processing disorder (APD). Some studies suggest that defects in basic auditory processing can lead to phonological defects as the most prominent cause of dyslexia. Thus, in some cases, there may be interrelationships between dyslexia and some of the aspects of central auditory processing. In recent years, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been used as a safe method for

Auditory evoked potential patterns to voiced and voiceless speech sounds in adult developmental dyslexics with persistent deficits.

Auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) were recorded from eight developmental dyslexic adults with persistent reading, spelling and phonological deficits, and 10 non-dyslexic controls to voiced (/ba/) and voiceless (/pa/) consonant-vowel syllables. Consistent with previous data, non-dyslexics coded these stimuli differentially according to the temporal cues that form the basis of the voiced/voiceless contrast: AEPs had time-locked components with latencies that were determined by the temporal structure of the stimuli. Dyslexics were characterized by one of two electrophysiological patterns: AEP pat

Deficits in auditory and visual steady-state responses in adolescents with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Many aspects of steady-state responses of the brain remain unclear in bipolar disorder (BD) due to the small number of auditory steady-state response (ASSR) studies and the lack of steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) studies on this complex disorder. Therefore, we assessed the patterns of SSVEP and ASSR in adolescents with BD during an active task to detect possible deficits in these important brain responses compared to normal subjects. METHODS: 27 adolescents with BD and 30 healthy adolescents were assessed in this study. The blinking background of the monitor presented

Pure word deafness (auditory verbal agnosia) is characterized by an impairment of auditory comprehension, repetition of verbal material and writing to dictation whereas spontaneous speech production and reading largely remain unaffected. Sometimes, this syndrome is preceded by complete deafness (cortical deafness) of varying duration. Perception of vowels and suprasegmental features of verbal utterances (e.g., intonation contours) seems to be less disrupted than the processing of consonants and, therefore, might mediate residual auditory functions. Often, lip reading and/or slowing of speaking

Cut-off point for high dysphonia risk in children based on the Child Dysphonia Risk Screening Protocol: preliminary findings.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to establish a cut-off point for high dysphonia risk in children using the Child Dysphonia Risk Screening Protocol (DRSP-C). METHODS: Through a preliminary study, voice recordings of 59 children (4-12 years of age) were collected during an auditory-perceptual analysis using the Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice protocol. Thirty of the patients had voice disorders (patient group), and 29 did not (control group). A risk score for dysphonia was then calculated, and data were compared between groups. The relationship between overall degre
