The autonomic nervous system in the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism.

The autonomic nervous system is a crucial mediator between the central nervous system and peripheral tissues and is essential for maintaining homeostasis. In this Review, we discuss the bidirectional communication between the autonomic nervous system and metabolic tissues in humans, focusing on the coordination of systemic glucose and lipid metabolism through autonomic signalling across changing physiological states. We also discuss the crosstalk between autonomic and immune pathways and its relevance for metabolic control. An overview of current methodologies to assess autonomic function in h…

The autonomic nervous system: A potential link to the efficacy of acupuncture.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a diffuse network that regulates physiological systems to maintain body homeostasis by integrating inputs from the internal and external environment, including the sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric nervous systems (ENS). Recent evidence suggests that ANS is one of the key neural pathways for acupuncture signal transduction, which has attracted worldwide attention in the acupuncture field. Here, we reviewed the basic and clinical research published in PubMed over the past 20 years on the effects of acupuncture on ANS regulation and homeostasis maint…

GERD and obesity: is the autonomic nervous system the missing link?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common chronic condition that not only impairs the quality of life of those who are affected by … contraction and relaxation of the LES are vagally mediated, the question that arises is whether the autonomic nervous system is, in fact, the missing link between obesity and GERD. In this article we examine the current evidence and hypothesize that the potential imbalance in sympathovagal stimulation to the LES is a key contributing factor to the increased prevalence of …

The effect of microgravity on the autonomic nervous system of rhesus monkeys.

Gastric myoelectric activity and respiratory sinus arrhythmia of two monkeys flown on Bion 11 were investigated. During flight, vagal effects on cardiac and gastric function of the two animals varied differently: in one animal they decreased at an early flight stage and returned to the control level by the end of flight, whereas in the second monkey the trend was the opposite. The decrease was accompanied by space motion sickness symptoms.

Involvement of the autonomic nervous system in the pathophysiology of Rett syndrome.

Clinical observations and physiological evidence suggest involvement of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in Rett syndrome (RS). We studied sympathetic skin response (SSR) and sleep-wakefulness-rhythm (SWR) in patients with RS and discussed involvement of the ANS in reference to the pathophysiology. The age dependent alteration in the parameters in SSR was suggested. Some patients showed absence of SSR and some showed asymmetric involvement of the parameters of the SSR, which suggested involvement of the ANS at a peripheral level and possible influences from higher centers. The asymmetry corr…

[The function of the autonomic nervous system in women with androgenetic alopecia].

Essential shifts in the autonomic nervous system, detectable by clinical methods and during a dynamic examination (of the autonomic reactivity and autonomic activity provision) were revealed in women suffering from androgenetic alopecia. The status of the autonomic nervous system was analyzed with consideration for the effects of psychogenic factors and the type of hair loss. The findings will help develop approaches to treatment of the condition.

Role of autonomic nervous system in the pathogenesis of angina pectoris.

The attacks of vasospastic angina or coronary spasm can be induced by injection of epinephrine, cold pressor test, Valsalva maneuver, and exercise. The attacks induced by these procedures can be suppressed by injection of phentolamine, an alpha adrenergic blocking agent in 80 per cent of the patients. On the other hand, propranolol, a beta adrenergic blocking agent, is not only ineffective in suppressing the attacks but aggravates the attacks in 50 per cent of the patients. Thus, alpha adrenergic receptors seem to play an important role in the production of vasospastic angina. The attacks of v

Effects of ketamine on the peripheral autonomic nervous system of the rat.

The effects of ketamine (2-(o-chlorophenyl) 2-methylaminocyclohexanone) (2-50 mg/kg) on the responses of the pithed rat arterial pressure, anococcygeus muscle and colon to selective stimulation of the spinal autonomic outflows were examined. Ketamine depressed the vasopressor response produced by stimulation of the lumbar sympathetic outflow in a dose-dependent manner but did not significantly affect the pressor response to intravenous noradrenaline (NA) administration. Ketamine depressed the motor responses of the anococcygeus to stimulation of the pre-ganglionic lumbar sympathetic outflow or

[Digestive system neoplasms originating from the autonomic nervous system. Diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic issues].

The gastrointestinal autonomic nerve tumors (GAN tumor) are uncommon stromal tumors of the intestinal tract and retroperitoneum. The distinction of GAN tumors from other gastrointestinal stromal tumors is based on electron microscopic findings. However further study of additional cases is needed to fully characterize both their gross and microscopic features and to further characterize the natural history of such tumors. In the present study we report two cases of GAN tumor that arose from the stomach and small intestinal with different prognostic evolution in two patients of 73 and 65 years o

Rhythm and Blues: Atrial Fibrillation, Depression, and the Autonomic Nervous System.

The treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) is compounded by its common coexistence with depression. Autonomic dysfunction has been described in both conditions, which may represent a shared target for treatment. A narrative review was conducted to synthesize the literature surrounding depression, AF, autonomic dysfunction characterized using heart rate variability, and antidepressant medication. Invasive autonomic modulation in AF has been studied as part of catheter ablation for AF. Changes in autonomic indices after catheter ablation have been associated with improved quality of life and redu

Autonomic nervous system dysregulation in neurodegenerative diseases: Bridging brain and heart.

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation is commonly observed in a class of neurodegenerative disorders known as α-synucleinopathies including Parkinson's disease (PD), Dementia with Lewy Bodies, Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), and Pure Autonomic Failure. The ANS controls involuntary functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and respiratory rate, and its disruption can significantly impact patients' quality of life. In neurodegenerative disorders, damage to brain regions that regulate the ANS, such as the brainstem and hypothalamus, leads to impaired autonomic functions. The …

Assessing bedside measures of autonomic nervous system dysregulation in the PICU.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation is common during critical illness and is often measured using heart rate variability (HRV). It is unknown if other forms of ANS function, such as pupillary light reflex and thermoregulation, are altered in critically ill children. We aimed to determine whether automated pupillometry and delta (central-to-peripheral) skin temperatures were associated with HRV. METHODS: In this prospective observational pilot, inclusion criteria were admission to the pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) and mechanical ventilation. HRV was calculated using …

Multivariable relationships between autonomic nervous system related indices in hyperbaric environments.

The main aim of this work is to model the relationships between parameters extracted from the heart rate variability (HRV) signal, which is derived from the electrocardiogram (ECG), at different stages of a simulated immersion in a hyperbaric chamber. The response of the Autonomic Nervous System is known to be affected by changes in atmospheric pressure, reflected in changes in the HRV signal. A dataset consisting of ECG signals from 17 subjects exposed to a controlled hyperbaric environment, simulating depths from 0 m to 40 m, was used. Both linear and nonlinear dependences of HRV parameters …
