A retrospective study of eating and psychosocial problems in patients with hepatic glycogen storage diseases and idiopathic ketotic hypoglycemia: Towards a standard set of patient-reported outcome measures.

There is a paucity in literature on eating and psychosocial problems in patients with hepatic glycogen storage disease (GSD) and idiopathic ketotic hypoglycemia (IKH), problems that can greatly affect quality of life. This is a monocentre, retrospective, observational mixed method study of patients with hepatic GSD or IKH treated at the Beatrix Children's Hospital Groningen, who had been referred to SeysCentra, a specialist centre for the treatment of eating problems. Additionally, a systematic literature review has been performed to identify instruments to quantify patient-reported outcome me

Eating Disorders: All that a Pediatrician Should Know.

Eating Disorders are psychiatric conditions that can manifest clinically as malnutrition due to restrictive eating and weight control behaviors or obesity due to binge eating. Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa have peak onset during adolescence and young adulthood. This population is at the highest risk due to psychosocial changes surrounding identity development and body image that occurs during this life-stage. Though binge eating disorder and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder are not characterized by body image overvaluation, peak onset is also during adolescence

Eating Disorders in the Primary Care Setting.

Eating disorders are mental health disorders with complicating medical, psychiatric, and nutritional comorbidities. Common eating disorder diagnoses include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, and other specified feeding or eating disorder. Unspecified feeding or eating disorder is most applicable in brief acute care settings. Eating disorders occur across age, gender, racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic variables. Effective assessment, intervention, and collaborative treatment are needed to decrease risk factors and increase oppor…

"It's always on the safe list": Investigating experiential accounts of picky eating adults.

Previous research into severely restricted eating for reasons which are not cultural, medical, due to a lack of food or due to concerns about body image has focused predominantly on "picky/fussy eating" in children. Despite evidence that picky eating does continue into adulthood and recognition in the new diagnostic category Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) that problematically avoidant and restrictive patterns of eating affect people across the lifespan, relatively little is known about the challenges and consequences faced by older adolescents and adults. This research emplo…

The multidimensional nature of food neophobia.

People vary in their willingness to try new foods. This variation, which is most frequently measured using the Food Neophobia Scale (FNS; Pliner & Hobden, 1992), has been interpreted as unidimensional. In four studies (N's = 210, 306, 160, and 161), we 1) demonstrate that food neophobia varies across meat and plant dimensions, 2) explore the validity of a measure of meat and plant neophobia, and 3) test whether these food neophobia dimensions predict decisions to eat a novel food item (i.e., a snack bar that contains insects). Mixed-effects model across the four studies indicated that the two

[Feeding and eating disorders in ICD-11].

Feeding and eating disorders in ICD-11 Abstract. Innovations in ICD-11 include the adoption of a lifespan approach and culture-related guidance for each disorder. We describe the changes made to the chapter Feeding and Eating Disorders and compared them to the ICD-10. In addition to illustrating the revision of the guidelines for each disorder, we also comment on the inclusion of a new set of diagnoses, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and binge-eating disorder (BED).

[ARFID: food restriction without fear of weight gain].

Avoidant/restrictive food avoidance disorder, or ARFID, is characterized by restrictive eating or avoidance of food in the absence of the cognitive restraint and weight phobia typically seen in anorexia nervosa. It is often based on a general disinterest in eating, selective eating due to sensory preferences, and/or fear of adverse consequences such as choking, although the diagnostic criteria allow for a number of other clinical presentations. Patients with ARFID tend to be younger, more often male, and have a longer duration of illness compared to patients with other eating disorders. Delimi

Differentiating Eosinophilic Esophagitis and Eating/Feeding Disorders.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an inflammatory condition of the esophagus that causes symptoms of esophageal dysmotility. Patients with f … ries demonstrates that symptoms of EoE can overlap with those of an ED, such as anorexia nervosa or avoidant restrictive food intake disorder. Therefore, assessment for either EoE or an ED should include questions related to both diagnoses. Symptoms that may raise suspicion of EoE are indigestion, acute (versus chronic) weight loss, and dysphagia, including the inability to swallow pills, …

High prevalence of avoidant/restrictive food ıntake disorder and psychiatric comorbidities in pediatric eosinophilic esophagitis.

UNLABELLED: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and subtypes of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) as well as other psychiatric comorbidities in children and adolescents diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). In this cross-sectional study, 29 children and adolescents (24 males, 82.8%) with EoE and 61 healthy controls (HC; 30 males, 49.2%) were included. The clinical group was recruited from a pediatric gastroenterology outpatient clinic, while the HC group was recruited from an outpatient child and adolescent psychiatry clinic, where participants were evaluated a

Fear and picky eating-related ARFID behaviors in children with food allergy.

BACKGROUND: Food allergy is a chronic condition with psychosocial consequences for both children and their families. Strict elimination diets and fear of adverse reactions may contribute to maladaptive coping including behaviors avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID)-related eating patterns. Therefore, this study aimed to compare ARFID-related eating behavior scores between children with food allergy and healthy controls and to identify the affected domains. METHODS: In this prospective controlled study, 234 children aged 2-9 years were enrolled, including 117 children with physici

New Therapeutic Strategies for Eating Disorders and Obesity Treatment.

Eating disorders are disabling, deadly, and costly mental disorders that considerably impair physical health and disrupt psychosocial functioning. Disturbed attitudes towards weight, body shape, and eating play a key role in the origin and maintenance of eating disorders. Eating disorders have been increasing over the past 50 years and changes in the food environment have been implicated. All health-care providers should routinely enquire about eating habits as a component of overall health assessment. Six main feeding and eating disorders are now recognised in diagnostic systems: anorexia ner

Prevalence, severity, and clinical correlates of food neophobia in Salvadorian youth.

Food neophobia (FN) describes problematic fear-based avoidance/restriction of novel foods. Using the novel parent-reported Measure of Food Neophobia (MFN), the authors examined FN symptoms and impairment in 305 Salvadorian children and explored clinical correlates. Factor analysis supported the MFN's designed structure to inquire about FN symptoms and FN impairment. At least one FN symptom was observed in 91% of the sample; however, only 9% were rated as having moderate or greater impairment. Demographic variables were not associated with FN; however, FN was positively correlated with internal

Family-based treatment was found to be possibly efficacious for avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, with other clinical trials for cognitive treatment modalities under way. Ongoing research examining treatments for eating disorders in children and adolescents broadly is needed.

Transforming Systems of Care for Girls: Addressing Eating Disorders in Girls Across Systems of Care.

The objectives of this clinical review will be to (1) understand the diagnosis of eating disorders in girls across systems of care, (2) understand cultural and other barriers that may impede a patient and family's ability to engage in care, (3) understand interventions for eating disorder treatment for girls across systems care, and (4) recognize when there is a need for advocacy for more intensive and specialized treatment for eating disorders. This review will focus on anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and avoidant restrictive food intake disorder.

An eating disorder disguised as superior mesenteric artery syndrome.

Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is the clinical diagnosis for symptoms resulting from compression of the duodenum between the abdominal aorta and SMA. SMA syndrome and eating disorders often present with similar gastrointestinal complaints such as abdominal pain, reflux, vomiting, and nausea. While SMA syndrome is seen with anorexia nervosa, it has rarely been associated with avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). We present a case of ARFID initially presenting as a radiologic diagnosis of SMA syndrome.

Wernicke Encephalopathy in an Adolescent With Severe Genetic Obesity and Hyperphagia.

Wernicke encephalopathy (WE) is a life-threatening neuropsychiatric disorder caused by thiamine deficiency (TD). One cause of TD is restrictive food intake. We present a girl with severe, treatment-resistant obesity from infancy due to hyperphagia caused by melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) deficiency. When aged 16 years, she presented at the emergency department with diplopia, headache, confusion, and ataxia. She had lost 25 kg in the previous 2 months because of anxiety-induced avoidant and restrictive food intake, despite persistent hyperphagia. Her anxiety had been triggered by a period of na

Eating disorders in adolescents and young adults with cystic fibrosis.

INTRODUCTION: There is evidence for increased risk of eating disorders in individuals with diet-treated chronic illnesses, however, data in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) is less clear. No studies have evaluated avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) in the CF population. We investigated the prevalence of eating disorders, including ARFID, in adolescents and young adults with CF. METHODS: Patients with CF aged 14-35 years were recruited to complete three validated surveys: (1) Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q), (2) Nine-Item Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Diso
