Effect of enteral nutrition and ecoimmunonutrition on bacterial translocation and cytokine production in patients with severe acute pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) with severe complications such as multiple organ failure, necrosis, abscess, and formation of pancreatic pseudocysts often gives rise to a high mortality despite intensive treatment. Parenteral nutrition (PN), elemental enteral nutrition, and ecoimmunonutrition (EIN) hastened the recovery of SAP patients, stimulated gastrointestinal motility, and alleviated the degree of systemic inflammatory response syndrome. This study aimed to examine the effects of enteral nutrition (EN) and EIN on bacterial translocation and cytokine production in patients with…

Bacterial translocation as a source of Dacron-graft contamination in experimental aortic operation: the importance of controlling SIRS.

BACKGROUND: Several experimental studies have shown the beneficial effects of nitric oxide (NO) in the modulation of the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Nitric oxide is involved in and affects almost all stages in the development of inflammation. We have attempted to ascertain whether the nitric oxide donor molsidomine prevents aortic graft contamination through control of the SIRS and a decrease in bacterial translocation (BT). METHODS: Twenty-four mini-pigs were divided into 4 groups. The animals were subjected to suprarenal aortic/iliac cross-clamping (for 30 minutes) and b…

Effects of octreotide and a-tocopherol on bacterial translocation in experimental intestinal obstruction: a microbiological, light and electronmicroscopical study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Bacterial translocation induced by intestinal obstruction is suggested to be due to increased intestinal luminal volume, leading to intestinal overgrowth with certain enteric microorganisms and intestinal mucosal damage. If this suggestion is true, maintenance of intestinal mucosal integrity by a cytoprotective agent, a-tocopherol, and inhibition of gastrointestinal secretions by octreotide should decrease the incidence of bacterial translocation and extent of mucosal injury due to intestinal obstruction. METHODS: Complete intestinal obstruction was created in the distal ileu…

The gut-liver axis in cirrhosis: bacterial translocation, immune dysregulation, and the impact of microbiota in diverse aetiologies.

This article describes an unusual clinical-radiographic presentation of a lateral periodontal cyst, as a differential diagnosis of a residual cyst, following the 'CARE guidelines for case reports'. The radiolucent lesion was identified on the imaging exam of a 53-year-old male patient. Based on radiographic findings and aspiration puncture, the probable diagnosis was a residual cyst; however, histological analysis revealed a thin, non-inflamed fibrous capsule covered by some epithelial layers in most of the lesion. The definitive diagnosis was a lateral periodontal cyst with unusual clinical a

The implication of intestinal bacterial translocation in central line associated blood stream infections in the pediatric population.

INTRODUCTION: Bacterial intestinal translocation plays an important role in neonatal sepsis. We aimed to elucidate the importance of such translocation in causing central line associated blood stream infection (CLABSI) in patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery (GIS). METHODS: Using a database of pediatric patients with CLABSI, patients were divided into those who had a GI-surgery (where intestines were opened), those who had a non-GI-surgery (NGIS; all other types of surgery) and those who had no surgery (NS). Data regarding type of organisms isolated on culture, their resistance patter

Legionella pneumophila translocated translation inhibitors are required for bacterial-induced host cell cycle arrest.

The cell cycle machinery controls diverse cellular pathways and is tightly regulated. Misregulation of cell division plays a central role in the pathogenesis of many disease processes. Various microbial pathogens interfere with the cell cycle machinery to promote host cell colonization. Although cell cycle modulation is a common theme among pathogens, the role this interference plays in promoting diseases is unclear. Previously, we demonstrated that the G1 and G2/M phases of the host cell cycle are permissive for Legionella pneumophila replication, whereas S phase provides a toxic environment

Bacterial translocation is favored by the preservation of the ileocecal valve in experimental short bowel with total parenteral nutrition.

Sepsis in short-bowel syndrome (SBS) is in part due to bacterial translocation (BT). Parenteral nutrition (PN) is often necessary in SBS and promotes BT. The aim of this study was to asses the effect of the presence or absence of ileocecal valve (ICV) on BT in parenterally-fed rats with massive intestinal resection. Sixty-five adult Wistar rats underwent central venous cannulations and were randomly assigned to one of five groups receiving for ten days five treatment regimes: Sham (n = 17) standard rat chow + i.v. saline. PN (n = 17) fasting + PN. Res-Sham (n = 10) standard rat chow + i.v. sal…

Xyloglucan protects the intestinal barrier and reduces bacterial translocation in experimental cirrhosis - A promising non-antibiotic strategy.

BACKGROUND: cirrhosis alters the intestinal barrier, increasing permeability and promoting bacterial translocation (BT). Norfloxacin (NF) is currently the only effective strategy to reduce BT, but the rise of multidrug-resistant bacteria highlights the need for new approaches. AIMS: to evaluate the effect of xyloglucan, alone or with norfloxacin, on the intestinal barrier in cirrhotic rats with ascites. METHODS: decompensated cirrhosis with ascites was induced in 32 rats using CCl4. Subsequently, xyloglucan (XG), NF, XG + NF (XG+NF), or water (control) were administered for one week. Paramet…

Legionellapneumophila induces methylomic changes in ten-eleven translocation to ensure bacterial reproduction in human lung epithelial cells.

Introduction. Legionella pneumophila is a Gram-negative flagellated bacteria that can infect human lungs and cause a severe form of pneumonia named Legionnaires' disease.Hypothesis. We hypothesize that L. pneumophila infection induces methylomic changes in methylcytosine dioxygenases, ten-eleven translocation (TET) genes, and controls DNA methylation following infection.Aim. In the current research, we sought to further investigate DNA methylation changes in human lung epithelial cells upon L. pneumophila infection and determine how methylation inhibitor agents disturb L. pneumophila reproduct

Characterising Post-mortem Bacterial Translocation Under Clinical Conditions Using 16S rRNA Gene Sequencing in Two Animal Models.

Sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI) is the sudden and unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant occurring within the first year of life where the cause is not immediately obvious. It is believed that a proportion of unexplained infant deaths are due to an infection that remains undiagnosed. The interpretation of post-mortem microbiology results is difficult due to the potential false-positives, a source of which is post-mortem bacterial translocation. Post-mortem bacterial translocation is the spread of viable bacteria from highly colonised sites to extra-intestinal tissues. We hy…

Protective Capacity of Resveratrol, a Natural Polyphenolic Compound, against Deoxynivalenol-Induced Intestinal Barrier Dysfunction and Bacterial Translocation.

Contamination of food/feedstuffs by mycotoxins is a serious problem worldwide, causing severe economic losses and serious health problems in animals/humans. Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a major mycotoxin contaminant and is known to impair intestinal barrier function. Grapes and red wine are rich in polyphenols, such as resveratrol (RES), which has striking antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. RES is a food-derived component; therefore, it may be simultaneously present with DON in the gastrointestinal tract. The aim of this study was to explore in vitro protective effects of RES against DON

Long-term cannabinoid type 2 receptor agonist therapy decreases bacterial translocation in rats with cirrhosis and ascites.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Intestinal hyperpermeability, impaired peritoneal macrophages (PMs) phagocytosis, and bacterial translocation (BT), resulting in increased systemic and local infection/inflammation such as spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) together with increased tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) levels, are all implicated in the pathogenesis of cirrhosis-related complications. Manipulation of the cannabinoid receptors (CB1R and CB2R), which are expressed on the gut mucosa and PMs, has been reported to modulate intestinal inflammation and systemic inflammatory cytokine release. Our study …
