Characterization of axonal injury produced by controlled cortical impact.

Axonal injury and behavioral changes were evaluated 3-7 days after traumatic brain injury. Previous research from this laboratory demonstrated that clinical central nervous pathology is produced by dynamic brain compression using a stroke-constrained impactor. We wanted to determine if the technique also would produce diffuse axonal injury after recovery from the procedure. The experiments were performed at Wayne State University School of Medicine using aseptic techniques while assuring analgesic care. Impacts were performed at 4.3 m/sec or 8.0 m/sec, with congruent to 10% compression (2.5 mm

Successful transanal removal of unusual foreign body self-inserted in the rectum A case report and review of literature.

Foreign bodies in the rectum are a true proctological emergency. The incidence of these cases is increasing in recent years mostly due to auto-erotic acts and behavior disordes and is mainly observed in young patients. Most patients with rectal foreign bodies present to the emergency room usually exhausted after efforts of removingothe object at home. Many endoscopic and surgical techniques to get such removal have been described in the literature and the reported variety of in foreign bodies is as large as the number of techniques used to remove them. Authors report a case of unusual foreign

Histological and biomechanical study of dura mater applied to the technique of dura splitting decompression in Chiari type I malformation.

Many techniques are described to treat Chiari type I malformation. One of them is a splitting of the dura, removing its outer layer only to reduce the risks of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak. We try to show the effectiveness of this technique from histological and biomechanical observations of dura mater. Study was performed on 25 posterior fossa dura mater specimens from fresh human cadavers. Dural composition and architecture was assessed on 47 transversal and sagittal sections. Uniaxial mechanical tests were performed on 22 dural samples (15 entire, 7 split) to focus on the dural macroscopi

Neural substrate and underlying mechanisms of working memory: insights from brain stimulation studies.

The concept of working memory refers to a collection of cognitive abilities and processes involved in the short-term storage of task-relevant information to guide the ongoing and upcoming behavior and therefore describes an important aspect of executive control of behavior for achieving goals. Deficits in working memory and related cognitive abilities have been observed in patients with brain damage or neuropsychological disorders and therefore it is important to better understand neural substrate and underlying mechanisms of working memory. Working memory relies on neural mechanisms that enab

Estimating audiometric thresholds using simultaneous acquisition of ASSR and ABR from QASSR in patients with sensorineural hearing loss.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the accuracy with which the innovative QASSR method predicts behavioral thresholds in adult patients with sensorineural hearing loss. DESIGN: Subjects were tested at four carrier frequencies (500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz).The resulting QASSR recordings were analyzed for thresholds and magnitude/phase characteristics. Tone-burst ABR was recovered from QASSR signal using CLAD method and analyzed in the time domain. The electrophysiological estimates were compared to hearing thresholds determined behaviorally. STUDY SAMPLE: Sixteen ears of nine volunteer subjects recruit

Morphological aspects and observations about the permeability of the rat mesentery to the osmium-amine.

In a previous work we felt that many authors were interested in observing the permeability and structure of the mesentery employing many techniques and analysing the material from different points of view. Our collaboration, at that time, was limited to the study of the permeability of the mesentery to the lanthanum nitrate and we came to a final conclusion that the penetration of the heavy salt is impeded by the presence of a basement membrane, localized between the mesothelial and connective tissue layers and that it was continuous to the basal lamina, located between neighbouring mesothelia

Mechanical characterization of the softening behavior of human vaginal tissue.

The mechanical properties of vaginal tissue need to be characterized to perform accurate simulations of prolapse and other pelvic disorders that commonly affect women. This is also a fundamental step towards the improvement of therapeutic techniques such as surgery. In this paper, the softening behavior or Mullins effect of vaginal tissue is studied by proposing an appropriate constitutive model. This effect is an important factor after the birth, since vaginal tissue has been supporting a high load distribution and therefore does not recover its original behavior. Due to the anisotropy of the

Overcoming the black box of aspiration thrombectomy in acute ischemic stroke: An early clinical experience of using contrast injections to understand clot-catheter interactions.

BackgroundFactors responsible for failure of aspiration thrombectomy in patients with acute ischemic stroke are poorly understood. In order to examine catheter-clot interactions, we modified our current aspiration thrombectomy technique by performing contrast injections near the tip of the aspiration catheter prior to the initiation of aspiration thrombectomy.MethodsSmall volume injections of contrast were performed using a microcatheter positioned inside the aspiration catheter immediately proximal to the occlusion site. Continuous fluoroscopy during the entire duration of each aspiration pas

Depressed mothers' neonates improve following the MABI and a Brazelton demonstration.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of a short-term intervention for improving interaction behaviors of newborn infants with their depressed mothers. METHODS: Depressed mothers assigned to the experimental group first observed an administration of the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS) at delivery. Mothers then used a similar instrument, the Mother's Assessment of the Behavior of her Infant (MABI), to independently conduct NBAS-like infant assessments periodically at home. Depressed mothers in the control group were not present when the NBAS was administered at delivery, and they

Neuroimaging and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Heavy prenatal alcohol exposure causes permanent structural alterations to the brain and can lead to numerous cognitive and behavioral outcomes. Consistent with many of the neuropsychological and behavioral deficits that have been reported, neuroimaging studies reveal a pattern of structural abnormalities associated with prenatal alcohol exposure. This chapter systematically reviews structural anomalies by brain region, identifying cognitive and behavioral correlates when relevant. The consensus shows that in addition to the overall reduction of brain size, prominent brain shape abnormalities

Fibro-Osseous Lesions of the Skull Base in the Pediatric Population.

Fibro-osseous lesions of the skull base include a variety of lesions with different biologic behavior. The most common lesions include fibrous dysplasia, osteoma, aneurysmal bone cyst, and juvenile ossifying fibroma. The diagnosis can usually be established with radiographic imaging. In the absence of symptoms, slow-growing lesions can often be observed. When surgery is indicated for relief of symptoms, endoscopic endonasal techniques are well suited for all age groups.

Periprosthetic tibial fracture in robotic-assisted versus conventional medial UKA: in vitro testing and finite element analysis of baseplate footprint.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic tibial fracture after unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is uncommon but clinically important. Although robotic-assisted UKA may improve the precision of bone preparation and component positioning, whether these technical differences influence fracture resistance or fracture morphology remains unclear. This in vitro study examined whether robotic-assisted medial UKA alters axial load-to-failure compared with conventional UKA, whether fracture morphology differs between the two techniques, and whether implant base footprint influences fracture behavior in comple

Suicide risk prediction for Korean adolescents based on machine learning.

Traditional clinical risk assessment tools proved inadequate for reliably identifying individuals at high risk for suicidal behavior. As a result, machine learning (ML) techniques have become progressively incorporated into psychiatric care. This study evaluates the predictive capability of national survey data, which includes factors such as lifestyle behaviors and mental health indicators, in forecasting adolescent suicidal behavior. The predictive performance of six ML models-Logistic Regression (LR), Decision Tree (DT), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM), Extreme

IL-13 Ameliorates Neuroinflammation and Promotes Functional Recovery after Traumatic Brain Injury.

Microglia play essential roles in neuroinflammatory responses after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Our previous studies showed that phenotypes of microglia, as well as infiltrating macrophages, altered at different stages after CNS injury, which was correlated to functional outcomes. IL-13 is an anti-inflammatory cytokine that has been reported to protect against demyelination and spinal cord injury through immunomodulation. The effects of IL-13 in microglia/macrophage-mediated immune responses after TBI remain unknown. In this study, we showed that intranasal administration of IL-13 in male C5

Characterization of the Dynamic Behavior of Neutrophils Following Influenza Vaccination.

Neutrophils are amongst the first cells to respond to inflammation and infection. Although they play a key role in limiting the dissemination of pathogens, the study of their dynamic behavior in immune organs remains elusive. In this work, we characterized in vivo the dynamic behavior of neutrophils in the mouse popliteal lymph node (PLN) after influenza vaccination with UV-inactivated virus. To achieve this, we used an image-based systems biology approach to detect the motility patterns of neutrophils and to associate them to distinct actions. We described a prominent and rapid recruitment of
