Longitudinal Impact of Life Events on Adolescent Binge Drinking in the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA).

Background: Life events experienced during adolescence are associated with risk and resilience to heavy episodic drinking (HED; i.e. binge drinking). The current study builds on prior research using latent class analysis (LCA) to examine heterogeneity in patterns of adolescent life events at baseline to HED over the course of three years (4 timepoints) as part of the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA). Methods: Life event classes were modeled using LCA that characterized NCANDA participants based upon their responses to the Life Events Questionnaire (N …

Spontaneous rupture of the urinary bladder caused by eosinophilic cystitis in a male after binge drinking: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous rupture of the urinary bladder is a rare, difficult to diagnose surgical emergency with a high mortality, there are many causes for spontaneous rupture of the urinary bladder, but we only found 2 reports on this condition in our literature search. A 36-year-old male patient was admitted with "whole abdominal pain associated with hematuria for 5 hours." Our patient did not have a history of definite allergy, but a long-term history of alcohol abuse. This patient was followed up for 1 year, and the cystoscopy recheck showed that the bladder lesion had healed. CONCLUSIO

Relationship of binge drinking to alcohol dependence, other psychiatric disorders, and behavioral problems in an American Indian tribe.

The hypothesis that binge drinking is a benign behavior not associated with alcohol dependence, other psychiatric disorders, or problem areas, in American Indians, was tested in a sample of 582 adult Southwestern American Indian males and females in large multigenerational pedigrees. All information was obtained from semistructured psychiatric interviews that were independently blind-rated for DSM-III-R diagnoses. Three main outcome measures were used: the relationship between binge drinking and (1) alcohol dependence and other psychiatric disorders, (2) substance abuse treatment, and (3) four…

Local Construction Employment and Binge Drinking Among US Adults in Their Early 30s: Insights From a Path Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Construction workers face elevated risks of alcohol misuse-especially binge drinking-due to physically demanding labor, long hours, and limited paid vacation. At the same time, emerging evidence suggests that a larger local construction sector may have protective community-level effects on alcohol and other drug outcomes. This study examines how both county-level construction job share and individual employment in construction relate to residents' binge-drinking behaviors, incorporating individual and work-related mediators. METHODS: Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey…

Examining the relationship between social determinants of health with daily tobacco use, binge-drinking, and daily cannabis use.

INTRODUCTION: There is growing recognition that social determinants of health (SDOH) shape health behaviors in powerful ways. Given that risky substance use remains a persistent public health problem, the relationship between SDOH and substance use merits investigation. The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between various social determinants of health (SDOH) with binge drinking, daily tobacco use, and daily cannabis consumption. METHODS: Using the most recent Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data (2022-2023) we conducted two sets of logistic regression models. …

Dynamic evaluation of blood marker changes induced by acute binge drinking in healthy individuals: a randomized controlled trial.

Acute alcohol consumption is known to exert widespread physiological effects, yet the immediate impacts on metabolic biomarkers remain incom … ohol ingestion compared to the control group. This study demonstrated that even a single episode of binge drinking could induce significant alterations of biomarkers related to liver function, cardiac function, and lipid profiles. These findings provided valuable insights into the short-term impact of alcohol on health and highlighted the importance of further r …

Sociodemographic factors associated with daily tobacco smoking and binge drinking among Zambians: evidence from the 2017 STEPS survey.

BACKGROUND: The burden of disease attributable to tobacco smoking and harmful alcohol consumption poses a major threat to sustainable development in most low- and middle-income countries. However, evidence on tobacco use and harmful alcohol consumption to inform context-specific interventions addressing these harmful social behaviours is limited in the African context. This study aimed to determine the sociodemographic factors associated with daily tobacco smoking and binge drinking in Zambia. METHODS: The study stems from nationwide population-based representative survey data collected using…

Evaluating a selective prevention programme for binge drinking among young adolescents: study protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In comparison to other Europe countries, Dutch adolescents are at the top in drinking frequency and binge drinking. A total of 75% of the Dutch 12 to 16 year olds who drink alcohol also engage in binge drinking. A prevention programme called Preventure was developed in Canada to prevent adolescents from binge drinking. This article describes a study that aims to assess the effects of this selective school-based prevention programme in The Netherlands. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial is being conducted among 13 to 15-year-old adolescents in secondary schools. Schools were ra…

The importance of the individual's micro-environment in drug consumption : A novel conceptual framework applied to the modeling of binge drinking.

The identification of psychosocial risk and protective factors associated with substance use during adolescence is crucial for the prevention and treatment of addictive behaviors. However, in the mathematical modeling of addictions, these psychological and social dimensions are often addressed in isolation. By focusing on the immediate socialization environment of adolescents, comprising peers, parents and family, and school, and considering them as risk and protective factors, we mathematically model binge drinking behavior from interaction dynamics among individuals and their predisposition …

Sex- and age-dependent impacts of nicotine and ethanol binge drinking on the brain: Insights from preclinical research.

Electronic cigarette use among adolescents is a growing concern, not only due to the high incidence of co-use with other substances, such as alcohol, but also due to the fact brain is still maturing during this period. Combined exposure to alcohol and nicotine leads to plastic adaptation of crucial circuits in the brain, which can contribute to the development of addiction. It is well established that nicotine exposure can facilitate alcohol binge drinking, and vice-versa, in a sex-, age- and exposure-dependent manner. Nonetheless, the central mechanisms underlying the synergistic relationship…

Emotional processing in binge drinking, tobacco use disorder and their comorbidity in youth: A preregistered PRISMA scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking (BD) and tobacco use disorder (TUD) are prevalent among youth, with significant social and health implications. However, research into the emotional impairments associated with BD and TUD during adolescence is sparse and lacks integration within a comprehensive model of emotional processes. Moreover, the impact of comorbid BD and TUD on emotional deficits remains largely unexplored. We propose the first review focused on the variation of emotional deficits in BD, TUD, or their comorbidity among adolescents and we systematically explore differences across various emot…

Externalizing and internalizing problems as predictors of alcohol-related harm and binge drinking in early adolescence: The role of gender.

BACKGROUND: Externalizing problems are commonly associated with alcohol outcomes in adolescence. Nevertheless, findings regarding internalizing problems are mixed, and fewer longitudinal studies have considered the both problems concomitantly and the role of gender. We examined the role of externalizing and internalizing problems in predicting adolescent alcohol-related harm and binge drinking, taking into account the gender differences. We also evaluated if externalizing problems could moderate the association between internalizing problems and alcohol outcomes. METHOD: We used longitudinal …

Novel role for carbohydrate responsive element binding protein in the control of ethanol metabolism and susceptibility to binge drinking.

UNLABELLED: Carbohydrate responsive element binding protein (ChREBP) is central for de novo fatty acid synthesis under physiological conditions and in the context of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. We explored its contribution to alcohol-induced steatosis in a mouse model of binge drinking as acute ethanol (EtOH) intoxication has become an alarming health problem. Within 6 hours, ChREBP acetylation and its recruitment onto target gene promoters were increased in liver of EtOH-fed mice. Acetylation of ChREBP was dependent on alcohol metabolism because inhibition of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH)…

Computed tomography assessment of peripubertal craniofacial morphology in a sheep model of binge alcohol drinking in the first trimester.

Identification of facial dysmorphology is essential for the diagnosis of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS); however, most children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) do not meet the dysmorphology criterion. Additional objective indicators are needed to help identify the broader spectrum of children affected by prenatal alcohol exposure. Computed tomography (CT) was used in a sheep model of prenatal binge alcohol exposure to test the hypothesis that quantitative measures of craniofacial bone volumes and linear distances could identify alcohol-exposed lambs. Pregnant sheep were randomly ass

Binge drinking during pregnancy and risk of seizures in childhood: a study based on the Danish National Birth Cohort.

Seizures are often found in children with fetal alcohol syndrome, but it is not known whether binge drinking during pregnancy by nonalcoholic women is associated with an increased risk of seizure disorders in children. The authors conducted a population-based cohort study of 80,526 liveborn singletons in the Danish National Birth Cohort (1996-2002). Information on maternal binge drinking (intake of > or = 5 drinks on a single occasion) was collected in 2 computer-assisted telephone interviews during pregnancy. Children were followed for up to 8 years. Information on neonatal seizures, epilepsy…
