PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper was to determine the architecture of the collagen fibers of the peripapillary sclera, the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and Henle's fiber layer in vivo in 3D using polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT).

A case of simultaneous aspergillosis and mucormycosis complicating diabetic foot gangrene is reported. The recognition of this combined opportunistic fungal infection was brought about by an initial finding of birefringent calcium oxalate crystals associated with a background of acute inflammatory exudate, which is considered a strong clue to the diagnosis of infection caused by Aspergillus niger.

A case of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis in a 33-yr-old female is reported. Many fiber-like crystals were noted within macrophages and the interstitial tissue of the lesion. Frozen, unstained sections of synovial tissue of a 38-year-old man with recurrent monoarthritis and hyperuricemia were studied. Negatively birefringent crystals in a spherulite form were detected by using a compensated polarized light microscope.
