Experiences of racism, sexual objectification and alcohol use among gay and bisexual men of colour.

Objective: Previous research has shown that experiences of racial discrimination and sexual objectification are associated with health risk behaviours among gay and bisexual men of colour. However, little is known about whether racial discrimination and sexual objectification are associated with alcohol use among this population. This community-based study examined the association between racial discrimination, sexual objectification and alcohol use in a sample of 369 gay and bisexual men of colour (Black/African/Caribbean, Latino/Latin American, South Asian, and East and Southeast Asian) in T

Mental health, drug use and sexual risk behavior among gay and bisexual men.

BACKGROUND: Compared to the general population, among gay and bisexual men (GBM) prevalence rates of anxiety and depression, and of drug use, are high. OBJECTIVE: This paper explores the relationship between mental health, sexual risk behavior, and drug use among Australian GBM. We identify factors associated with indicators of poor mental health. METHODS: Between September 2014 and July 2017, 3017 GBM responded to measures of anxiety and depression in an online cohort study of drug use. RESULTS: Mean age was 35.3 years (SD 12.8). 17.9% screened positive for current moderate-severe anxiety

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Health: Obstetrician-Gynecologists' Training, Attitudes, Knowledge, and Practice.

BACKGROUND: Deficits in provider training may contribute to disparities impacting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and gender nonconforming (LGB-TGNC) individuals. METHODS: We sent an anonymous online survey to randomly selected members of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and stratified responses by the history of training. We used logistic regression to predict impact of previous training on provider comfort with LGB-TGNC patients, and secondary outcomes, including provider practices, knowledge, and attitudes. RESULTS: Two hundred twenty-eight of 428 (53.3%) surv

Deaths in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender United Kingdom Communities Associated with GHB and Precursors.

BACKGROUND: Misuse of gammahydroxybutrate (GHB) and its prodrugs gammabutyrolactone (GBL) and 1,4 butanediol (1,4-BD) has increased greatly since the early 1990s, particularly amongst lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals in recreational and sexual settings, e.g. 'chemsex'. OBJECTIVE AND METHOD: This paper presents an overview of GHB pharmacotoxicology and provides analyses of cases in the LGBT population associated with the use of these substances extracted from the UK's National Programme on Substance Abuse Deaths database, to which notification is voluntary. RESULTS: F

A Multilevel Approach for Reducing Mental Health and Substance Use Disparities Affecting Bisexual Individuals.

Despite bisexual individuals being at increased risk for mental health and substance use problems, clinicians' ability to provide affirmative and competent care to bisexual clients is limited by their lack of bisexual-specific training. To address this common gap in training, this article provides a brief review of bisexual health disparities and the factors that influence them. Then, we describe a multi-level approach for improving the health and well-being of bisexual individuals. This approach addresses factors that influence health at the micro-level (e.g., strategies that clinicians can u

Psychosocial factors and ageing in older lesbian, gay and bisexual people: a systematic review of the literature.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To synthesise and evaluate the extant literature investigating the psychosocial influences on ageing as a lesbian, gay or bisexual person, to develop understanding about these influences and guide future research in the area. BACKGROUND: Research suggests there may be specific psychological and social factors relevant to ageing for individuals with a nonheterosexual identity. DESIGN: A systematic review was conducted on empirical research involving lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals aged 60 or above. METHODS: The Cochrane Database, PsychINFO, MEDLINE, Web of Science

How to assess gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men for chemsex.

OBJECTIVES: Sexualised substance use, 'chemsex', is being increasingly reported by gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in sexual health clinics. We aim to describe the evidence base and practical ways in which clinicians can assess and advise patients disclosing chemsex. METHODS: We review published literature on chemsex, discuss vulnerability to substance use, highlight the importance of clinical communication and discuss a management approach. RESULTS: GBMSM are vulnerable to substance use problems, which interplay with mental, physical and sexual health. Knowledge on

A transdiagnostic minority stress treatment approach for gay and bisexual men's syndemic health conditions.

Developing and deploying separate treatments for separate conditions seems ill-suited to intervening upon the co-occurring, and possibly functionally similar, psychosocial conditions facing gay and bisexual men. This article argues for the need to create transdiagnostic interventions that reduce multiple syndemic conditions facing gay and bisexual men at the level of their shared source in minority stress pathways. This article first reviews psychosocial syndemic conditions affecting gay and bisexual men, then suggests pathways that might link minority stress to psychosocial syndemics based on

Prevalence of Childhood Sexual Abuse among Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual People: A Meta-Analysis.

In order to determine the prevalence of childhood sexual abuse among gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals, we conducted a meta-analysis that compiled the results of 65 articles across 9 countries. The results revealed no significant difference in the prevalence of child sexual abuse between homosexual and bisexual people for both sexes. The prevalence of child sexual abuse among female sexual minorities was significantly higher than that among male sexual minorities. The lowest prevalence was found in South America, followed by Asia. The definition of child sexual abuse, dimension used to me

Infrequent condom use with casual partners among New Zealand gay and bisexual men.

AIMS: To identify predictors of non-condom use among gay and bisexual men (GBM) in New Zealand with casual male partners. METHODS: We analysed anonymous self-completed data from GBM who participated in the communitybased Gay Auckland Periodic Sex Survey (GAPSS) and Internet-based Gay Online Sex Survey (GOSS), undertaken in 2014. Infrequent condom use was defined as not using condoms "always" or "almost always" during anal intercourse in the prior six months. RESULTS: Of the 1,912 GBM reporting anal intercourse with a casual partner, 27.2% reported infrequent condom use. Being recruited from

Substance use and sexual risk differences among older bisexual and gay men with HIV.

Bisexual and gay men are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. Research typically combines these groups into the category of men who have sex with men, and little is known about between-group differences. HIV-positive populations are aging and have high rates of substance use compared to non-infected peers, while substance use among older adults has increased and is associated with unprotected intercourse. Among a sample of 239 HIV-positive bisexual and gay men aged 50 and older, bisexual men were more likely to report cigarette, cocaine, crack, and heroin use compared with gay men. However

Research funded by the National Institutes of Health on the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender populations.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the proportion of studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that focused on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations, along with investigated health topics. METHODS: We used the NIH RePORTER system to search for LGBT-related terms in NIH-funded research from 1989 through 2011. We coded abstracts for LGBT inclusion, subpopulations studied, health foci, and whether studies involved interventions. RESULTS: NIH funded 628 studies concerning LGBT health. Excluding projects about HIV/AIDS and other sexual health matters, only 0.1% (n = 113)

Mental health and substance use disparities among urban adolescent lesbian and bisexual girls.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority girls (SMGs) report large substance use disparities and victimization experiences, yet there is a dearth of research that focuses exclusively on SMGs. OBJECTIVE: To examine substance use and mental health disparities among SMGs and to determine whether disparities were larger for African American compared with European American girls. METHOD: Data were used from Wave 11 of the Pittsburgh Girls Study, a multiple-cohort, prospective study of urban girls. Girls for the current analysis were aged 16 to 19 years. Fifty-five percent were African American. One hundred an

What constitutes the best sex life for gay and bisexual men? Implications for HIV prevention.

BACKGROUND: While a large body of research has sought to understand HIV transmission risk behaviours among gay men, bisexual men and other men who have sex with men (MSM), less attention has been paid to the wider sexual health and well-being of this population. While some community-based organisations aim to support a more holistic sense of sexual well-being there is little evidence to draw on to inform their interventions. The current study sought to explore gay and bisexual men's conceptions of what constitutes the 'best sex'. METHOD: The EMIS survey of 2010 recruited more than 180,000 res

Behind closed doors: an exploration of kinky sexual behaviors in urban lesbian and bisexual women.

This study of 347 urban, self-identified lesbian (n = 289) and bisexual (n = 58) women examined women's engaging in 4 kinky sexual behaviors: bondage/domination, sadomasochism, photo/video exhibitionism, and asphyxiation/breath play. A cross-sectional, brief-intercept survey was administered at 2 New York City gay, lesbian, and bisexual community events. Over 40% reported engaging in at least 1 of these behaviors, and 25% reported engaging in multiple behaviors. Bisexual women were more likely to have engaged in any kinky sexual behavior and photo/video exhibitionism. White women were more lik

Psychosocial correlates of transmission risk behavior among HIV-seropositive gay and bisexual men.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to identify the determinants of sexual transmission risk behavior by HIV-positive individuals. We examined social cognitive theory (SCT) variables, which have been found to mediate the effectiveness of HIV risk reduction interventions. We also sought to identify contextual influences that might contribute to initial levels of SCT factors such as self-efficacy. METHOD: In the present study, a series of social cognitive variables and a number of factors hypothesized to influence self-efficacy were assessed among participants at baseline in the Seropositive Urban Men's Inte

Abuse, Social Support, and Depression Among HIV-Positive Heterosexual, Bisexual, and Lesbian Women.

SUMMARY A nonprobability sample of HIV-positive mostly African American and Puerto Rican women in New York City were surveyed regarding abusive experiences, social support, and depressive symptoms. Seventy-five percent reported experiencing physical or sexual abuse at some point in their lives. Multiple regression analyses controlling for relevant sociodemographic variables indicated that child physical and sexual abuse and adult sexual abuse were significantly associated with depressive symptomatology (i.e., CES-D scores). HIV-related social support had a significant negative correlation with

Lesbian and Bisexual Women's Experiences of Victimization: Mental Health, Revictimization, and Sexual Identity Development.

SUMMARY The prevalence and correlates of a variety of victimization experiences among a large, ethnically diverse national sample of 2,431 lesbian, bisexual, and gay women (LBG) is examined. Most participants (62.3%) report experiencing bias related victimization because they are LBG. Overall, 30.8% of participants report being harshly beaten or physically abused in childhood and 21.2% in adulthood; 39.3% report sexual victimization before the age of sixteen and 36.2% at age sixteen or older. Each type of victimization was significantly related to current psychological distress, and the more t
