Screening for Cognitive Impairments in Primary Blepharospasm.

BACKGROUNDS: Studies have reported that non-motor symptoms are an important component of primary dystonia. However, evidence supporting cognitive impairment in primary dystonia is limited and contradictory. METHODS: We applied the Chinese version of the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-Revised and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) to screen for cognitive impairment in patients with primary blepharospasm. In addition, we investigated the relationship between performance on the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-Revised and quality of life as measured by the Medical Outcomes Study 36…

Tactile temporal discrimination in patients with blepharospasm.

BACKGROUND: Blepharospasm is an adult-onset focal dystonia that causes involuntary blinking and eyelid spasms. Studies have shown the presence of sensory deficits associated with dystonia. AIM: To rule out any confounding effect of muscle spasms on sensory performance in affected and unaffected body regions of patients with blepharospasm and with hemifacial spasm. METHODS: Participants (19 patients with blepharospasm, 19 patients with hemifacial spasm and 19 control subjects) were asked to discriminate between two stimuli that were either simultaneous or sequential (temporal discrimination t…

Analysis of blink rate in patients with blepharospasm.

The blink rate (BR) during rest, conversation, and reading was assessed in 50 patients with blepharospasm (BS) and in 150 healthy subjects. BR at rest and during conversation was higher in patients with BS. Moreover, 76% of patients had BR higher at rest than during conversation, whereas in 74% of controls, BR was higher during conversation than at rest. The sensitivity and specificity of two parameters (value of BR at rest and pattern rest-BR higher than conversation-BR) in discriminating patients and controls were computed. The best fit was obtained with a rest-BR above 27 blinks per minute.…

Botulinum toxin type A therapy for blepharospasm.

BACKGROUND: Blepharospasm is a focal dystonia characterized by chronic intermittent or persistent involuntary eyelid closure due to spasmodic contractions of the orbicularis oculi muscles. Other facial and neck muscles are also frequently involved. Most cases are idiopathic and blepharospasm is generally a life-long disorder. Its severity can range from repeated frequent blinking to persistent forceful closure of the eyelids with functional blindness. Botulinum toxin type A (BtA) is the current first line therapy. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether botulinum toxin (BtA) is an effective and safe…

[Treatment of idiopathic blepharospasm with botulinum toxin A].

The preparations of botulinum toxin A--Botox and Porton were injected into the orbicular muscle of eye in 18 patients with idiopathic blepharospasm or Meige's syndrome. Improvement was achieved in 17 patients; in 10 injections should be repeated after about 8 weeks. Minor side effects declined after several days. Injection of botulinum toxin could be effective in this disease, otherwise hard to cure.

[Use of botulinum toxin A in treatment of blepharospasm].

Retrospective examinations comprised 26 patients with idiopathic, spastic blepharospasm, who received injections of botulinum A toxin subcutaneously or into orbicular muscle of eye. In 6 cases complete recovery was achieved. In all patients, symptoms subsided for a mean period of 12.5 weeks. These results are similar to those described earlier in literature.

A possible feline model for human blepharospasm.

'Benign essential blepharospasm' is a human eyelid disorder of unknown aetiology characterized by involuntary, bilateral, and disabling spasmodic contracture of the orbicularis oculi muscle. Treatments are frequently disappointing. Here we report what might be a first step toward developing an animal model for exploring mechanisms of the disorder and potential treatments. We surgically implanted stimulating electrodes into brain areas known to supply input to the lateral division of the facial nerve nucleus to induce blinking by electrical stimulation. Single-pulse stimuli at or near the facia…

[A case of bilateral blepharospasm responsive to edrophonium].

A case of bilateral blepharospasm who registered the efficacy of edrophonium was reported. The case is a 49-year-old female. She had been in good health until January, 1991 when she complained of difficulty in opening her eyes while driving. Thereafter the condition progressed to such a degree that she was unable to experience a comfortable life. Her blinking rate did not changed. The symptoms were triggered by stress or some physical action, such as walking or driving. They were attenuated by taking a bath, sleep or sedation. The severity of the symptoms varied during the day and from day to …

[Magnetic stimulation in patients with essential blepharospasm].

In 31 patients with an essential blepharospasm investigations were undertaken with transcranial cortical and cisternal magnetic stimulation of the facial nerve. Cortical stimulation was performed contralaterally, whereas cisternal stimulation was ipsilateral; the latencies and amplitudes of the potentials were determined. However, the extracranial part of the facial nerve was stimulated in the region of the stylomastoid foramen for neuromyography electrically. In most measurements the response potentials in the orbicularis oculi muscle and the levator labii muscle were determined. Cisternal st…
