Dosimetry in the space radiation field.

The results of dosimetric measurements are presented which were performed as part of a German experiment package flown onboard the Russian space station MIR. These results are compared to those of previous missions: the first United States Spacelab mission and the first German Spacelab mission. Detector packages consisting of plastic nuclear track detectors, nuclear emulsions, and thermoluminescence dosimeters were exposed in different sections of the Russian space station. The equivalent dose for the astronauts was calculated from the measurements to be 3.9 mSv. Before and after the flight ve

Patient dose assessment due to fluoroscopic exposure for some selected fluoroscopic procedures in Ghana.

Organ and effective doses to 90 patients undergoing some selected fluoroscopic examinations at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital were estimated using the Monte Carlo-based program (PCXMC version 1.5). Radiation dose was estimated from free-in-air measurements. The mean effective doses were found to be 0.29 +/- 0.07, 0.84 +/- 0.13, 3.15 +/- 0.44, 6.24 +/- 0.70 and 0.38 +/- 0.05 mSv for urethrogram, barium swallow, barium meal, barium enema and myelogram examinations, respectively. The dose area product was estimated to be 3.55 +/- 0.95, 16.44 +/- 2.60, 50.81 +/- 7.04, 99.69 +/- 10.85 and 9.32 +/-

Is hexachlorobenzene human overload related to porphyria cutanea tarda? A speculative hypothesis.

After the epidemic outbreak of Porphyria Turcica from 1955 to 1961, the porphyrinogenic effect of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) on humans and animals has been fully confirmed. HCB is an environmental contaminant originated from its use as fungicide or obtained as a by product from industrial residues. Measurement of HCB levels in adipose tissue and maternal milk is a useful tool for monitoring its body stores which are clearly higher in Spain than in other European or American countries. At least in the Spanish area of Catalunya, the HCB fat tissue concentration decreased from more than 5 ppm in 198

Succimer and the reduction of tissue lead in juvenile monkeys.

The extent to which succimer (2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid, DMSA) chelation reduces target organ lead (Pb) levels, including the skeleton, relative to the cessation of Pb exposure is a primary consideration in evaluating its efficacy for reducing toxicity in children. Here, we utilized a rhesus monkey model of childhood Pb exposure and a sensitive stable (204)Pb isotope tracer methodology to determine the efficacy of succimer for reducing Pb in blood, liver, and skeletal tissues from chronic (>/=1 year) versus short-term (3-4 days) Pb exposures. Specific attention was paid to the efficacy of su

Trends and Disparities in the Incidence of Intraocular Foreign Bodies 1990-2019: A Global Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to provide trends and disparities in the incidence of intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) from 1990 to 2019 in 204 countries by region, country, socio-demographic index (SDI), age, and sex. METHODS: The global, regional and national number of incident cases as well as age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of IOFBs were attained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019). To estimate the trend of ASIR of IOFBs, the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was calculated from 1990 to 2019. RESULTS: Globally, although ASIR of IOFBs decreased with an EAP

Exposures to lead during urban combat training.

Lead exposure is still a major concern for occupations that regularly train or work with firearms, such as law enforcement and military pers … f repeated exposures. We conclude that comparably low airborne concentrations can contribute to the body burden of lead and that additional measures to reduce exposure are warranted, particularly for instructors.

Trophic transfer and biomagnification potential of contaminants in aquatic ecosystems.

This review summarizes information obtained from published literature to determine to what degree biomagnification of organic compounds and metals occurs in freshwater and marine food webs. This review was conducted by: (1) examining data from studies conducted in laboratory experiments to establish body burden ratios between trophic levels (trophic transfer coefficients; TTCs); (2) comparing laboratory-derived TTCs with data obtained from field studies; and (3) comparing biomagnification predictions described by published aquatic food-web models with data obtained in this review. It was deter…

To the question of maximal permissible load with chemical substances in man.

The authors introduce an over-all evaluation of a maximum admissible drug load in man, as related to professional exposure, environmental atmosphere, water, soil, and foodstuffs. To minimize the occurrence of lesions, it is necessary to disclose and classify the environmental factors responsible for homeostasis of the human organism. Moreover, it is desirable to establish the limits of biologically adverse changes of the medium. A real adaptation is possible provided the above changes are sufficiently slow and enable development of optimum mechanisms of reactions within the biological homeosta

The tissue body burden and the detoxificatory fate of metals in animals seem to be more important in affecting metal accumulation than the nature of the exposure routes (aqueous vs. dietary) or of the exposure regimes. Metabolism of mercury in hamster pups administered a single dose of 203Hg-labeled methyl mercury.

Golden Syrian hamster pups were administered a single subcutaneous dose of 203Hg-labeled methyl mercury (MeHg), 0.4 nmol/g body weight, seven days after birth, and were sacrificed 2, 7, 14, 21 or 28 days later. The excretion of 203Hg followed a biphasic elimination pattern with an average half-time of 8.7 days for the rapid component. The slow component had a much longer half-time and probably reflects binding of 203Hg to growing hair. The concentration of 203Hg in the liver, kidneys and brain two days after administration was 0.44, 0.38 and 0.19 nmol/g, respectively. The retention of 203Hg wa

The amount of ferritin and hemosiderin in the livers of patients with iron-loading diseases.

Depot iron, ferritin iron, and ferritin protein were measured in 34 liver needle biopsy specimens obtained from patients with primary and secondary iron-loading diseases. The patients were classified as idiopathic hemochromatosis (14), porphyria cutanea tarda (4), and iron-loading anemias (16). With accumulation of depot iron, the amount of liver ferritin protein increased, however, the ratio of ferritin protein to depot iron fell at concentrations of depot iron in excess of 1,000 micrograms per gm of liver. The liver ferritin protein concentration was not influenced by the specific kind of th

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma: quantitative analysis of asbestos burden.

Malignant mesotheliomas develop commonly in the pleural cavity and rarely arise in the peritoneal cavity. It is well established that asbestos exposure is related to malignant pleural mesothelioma, but the asbestos burden in the abdominal cavity in patients with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma has not been well studied. The purpose of the present study was therefore to report on an autopsy case of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma with quantitative analysis of the asbestos burden in tissues from the pleura and organs in the abdominal cavity. The patient was a 67-year-old man with a history o

Occupational exposure to ambient electromagnetic fields of technical operational personnel working for a mobile telephone operator.

In order to investigate the exposure of operational personnel to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields when working for a mobile telephone operator, exposimeters were used to make individual records on 23 Technical Operations personnel (mobile telephone maintenance staff) and also on 22 Other Workers. The exposure densities, to which each of the 45 subjects was subjected, were quantified using 229 exposure indicators. Cluster analysis techniques were applied to the data, in an attempt to show that they would re-emerge as belonging to one of the two groups, i.e. the Technical Operational Person

Correlation between external exposure and activity in patients undergoing 131I thyroid cancer therapy.

The uptake and clearance of 131I activity for inpatients undergoing cancer therapy were determined from routine external dose survey measurements. A bi-exponential behavior was found, with the two time constants representing the iodine dynamics in the thyroid on one hand and in the rest of the body on the other. The external dose at 1 m from the patient was correlated to the activity in the thyroid remnant and inside the body, the averaged value being 52.8 +/- 11.4 microSv GBq(-1) h(-1). The temporal evolution of activity in the body, the urinary system and the thyroid remnant area were determ

Higher milk intake during pregnancy is associated with lower maternal and umbilical cord lead levels in postpartum women.

Lead exposure and its deleterious effects continue to be a problem in many countries. The lack of effective and safe treatments for low-level intoxication has promoted environmental interventions to control different sources of lead. In this study we evaluated the effect of milk consumption in 1849 mother-and-child pairs participating in the lead surveillance program in Mexico City. The mean lead levels were 11.2 micrograms/dL for maternal blood lead (MBL) and 10.8 micrograms/dL in umbilical cord. The correlation between blood lead and umbilical cord lead was r = 0.74. Forty-eight percent of t
