Comparative swarming dynamics of Antarctic krill and ice krill in the Ross Sea Region Marine Protected Area.

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) and ice krill (Euphausia crystallorophias) are vital to the Southern Ocean ecosystem, yet their swarming behavior remains poorly understood. This study applied a novel approach in the Ross Sea by directly linking acoustically detected swarms with net-captured krill, enabling precise identification of species and body size-key traits often unavailable in previous studies. From 14 Antarctic krill and 55 ice krill swarms, key properties-depth, length, height, area, and packing concentration-were extracted. Hierarchical clustering grouped swarms into two Antarct

Three-stage melting of a macroscopic continuous spacetime crystal.

A spacetime crystal is a phase of matter that spontaneously develops periodic order in both space and time. Spacetime crystals have been experimentally observed in microscopic quantum many-body systems and, very recently, in a mesoscopic nematic liquid crystal. However, the melting process of a spacetime crystal and its underlying physical mechanisms have not yet been experimentally reported. Here, we present a direct observation of a classical continuous spacetime crystal melting in a table-top experiment with macroscopic active granular disks in 2 + 1 spacetime dimensions. The spacetime crys

Light and Electron Microscopic Characterization of Vascular and Mitochondrial Structures in the Camel Retina.

Camels have unique morphological traits that enable them to adapt well to harsh conditions. This work aims to describe the vascular architecture of the camel retina and investigate its cellular components with a focus on the distribution of mitochondria in Muller cells and photoreceptors, using light and electron microscopy. The camel retina is euangiotic in which blood vessels extend in the inner retina from the nerve fiber layer to the outer plexiform layer. The pericytes are embedded in the basement membrane of the retinal capillaries, and overlapping of pericytes could be observed. Glial c

The somatosensory thalamus of monkeys: cortical connections and a redefinition of nuclei in marmosets.

Thalamic connections of three subdivisions of somatosensory cortex in marmosets were determined by placing wheatgerm agglutinin conjugated with horseradish peroxidase and fluorescent dyes as tracers into electrophysiologically identified sites in S-I (area 3b), S-II, and the parietal ventral area, PV. The relation of the resulting patterns of transported label to the cytoarchitecture and cytochrome oxidase architecture of the thalamus lead to three major conclusions. 1) The region traditionally described as the ventroposterior nucleus (VP) is a composite of VP proper and parts of the ventropos

DHCR24-mediated sterol homeostasis during spermatogenesis is required for sperm mitochondrial sheath formation and impacts male fertility over time.

Desmosterol and cholesterol are essential lipid components of the sperm plasma membrane. Cholesterol efflux is required for capacitation, a process through which sperm acquire fertilizing ability. In this study, using a transgenic mouse model overexpressing 24-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR24), an enzyme in the sterol biosynthesis pathway responsible for the conversion of desmosterol to cholesterol, we show that disruption of sterol homeostasis during spermatogenesis led to defective sperm morphology characterized by incomplete mitochondrial packing in the midpiece, reduced sperm count and

Management of Critically Injured Burn Patients During an Open Ocean Parachute Rescue Mission.

Best practices and training for prolonged field care (PFC) are evolving. The New York Pararescue Team has used part task training, cadaver labs, clinical rotations, and a complicated sim lab to prepare for PFC missions including critical care. This report details an Atlantic Ocean nighttime parachute insertion to provide advanced burn care to two sailors with 50% and 60% body surface area burns. Medical mission planning included pack-out of ventilators, video laryngoscopes, medications, and 50 L of lactated Ringer's (LR). Over the course of 37 hours, the patients required high-volume resuscita

Phospholipid packing defects and oxysterols in atherosclerosis: Dietary prevention and the French paradox.

The research literature on atherosclerosis includes findings investigating the atherosclerotic effect of oxysterols, which are the oxidation products of cholesterol; and the literature on oxysterols refers to mechanisms by which oxysterols cause phospholipid packing defects in cell membranes. This review synthesizes these two bodies of research findings to describe how oxysterols cause phospholipid packing defects within the membranes of vascular endothelial cells, potentially increasing cell permeability of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol which may lead to atheroma formation. Exogenous so

Malignant hyperthermia in a halothane-anesthetized horse.

Malignant hyperthermia developed in a 4-year-old Thoroughbred horse following 3 hours and 15 minutes of halothane anesthesia, with supplementary succinylcholine. Clinical signs included fever, sweating, hyperventilation, tachycardia, and decreased blood pressure followed by a rapid increase in blood pressure. Biochemical aberrations included hypocalcemia, hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia, myoglobinuria, and high creatine phosphokinase and ornithine carbamyl transferase activities. Treatment consisted initially of surface cooling with cold water, alcohol and ice, IV administration of cooled bala

Hyperthermia is a severe complication to intake of methamphetamines due to generalised overactivation of metabolism and muscle activity combined with vasoconstriction. In this case report, a patient presented to the emergency department after injection of 2 g "crystal meth", and advanced into fatal hyperthermia and organ failure in the intensive care unit. Treatment of substance-induced hyperthermia is symptomatic and reducing metabolism with benzodiazepines and actively lowering body temperature with ice packs and cold intravenous fluids are appropriate interventions. Dantrolene may be used b

Obstruction and perforation of the small bowel caused by inadvertent ingestion of a blister pill pack in an elderly patient.

Perforation of the small bowel due to foreign body ingestion is a rare instance that occurs in less than 1% of all ingestions. Although rare, ingestion of blister pill packaging is becoming more recognised as a causative agent for intestinal perforation, but is very rarely reported to cause intestinal obstruction. This is a report of a 66-year-old woman who presented with intestinal obstruction and underwent laparotomy, revealing small bowel perforation by a piece of blister pill pack foil. The patient was incognisant of the ingestion.

Predicting random close packing of binary hard-disk mixtures via third-virial-based parameters.

We propose a simple and accurate approach to estimate the random close packing (RCP) fraction of binary hard-disk mixtures. By introducing a parameter based on the mixture's reduced third virial coefficient-which effectively captures three-body correlations and excluded-area constraints-we show that the RCP fraction depends nearly linearly on this parameter, leading to a near-universal collapse of simulation data over a wide range of size ratios and compositions. Comparisons with previous models by Brouwers and Zaccone indicate that the present approach provides more accurate and consistent pr

Self-chaperoning of the type III secretion system needle tip proteins IpaD and BipD.

Bacteria expressing type III secretion systems (T3SS) have been responsible for the deaths of millions worldwide, acting as key virulence elements in diseases ranging from plague to typhoid fever. The T3SS is composed of a basal body, which traverses both bacterial membranes, and an external needle through which effector proteins are secreted. We report multiple crystal structures of two proteins that sit at the tip of the needle and are essential for virulence: IpaD from Shigella flexneri and BipD from Burkholderia pseudomallei. The structures reveal that the N-terminal domains of the molecul

Gossypiboma following cesarean section presenting as acute abdomen and sepsis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Gossypiboma is a problematic but rare and highly preventable surgical complication. The incidences of gossypiboma are vastly underreported; therefore, the actual incidence is unknown. Women undergoing obstetrical procedures constitute a fairly high proportion of patients with gossypibomas. Most cases present after months or years, and only a few cases have been reported that presented acutely within days. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a woman who presented with severe symptoms of intestinal obstruction leading to acute abdomen merely a week after her caesarean section.

Body cooling as a method for reducing hyperthermia. An evaluation of techniques.

The most important objective in the treatment of heatstroke and related conditions is to reduce the body core temperature to safe levels. Subjects performed at an external work rate of 54 W in hot, humid conditions (dry-bulb 40 degrees C, wet-bulb 35 degrees C), and a recent innovation to achieve body cooling, i.e. strategically placing instant cold packs (ICPs) (Coldpak; Medac) over the large vessels of the neck, axillae and groin, was evaluated under controlled laboratory conditions. We found that this procedure was not significantly more effective (P greater than 0.5) than passive body cool

Prevention of cerebrospinal fluid leak after vestibular schwannoma surgery: a case-series focus on mastoid air cells' partition.

BACKGROUND: Petrous bone pneumatization may be related to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak secondary to vestibular schwannoma surgery. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between petrous bone pneumatization and CSF leak in vestibular schwannoma surgery. METHODS: A retrospective study included 222 consecutive vestibular schwannoma patients treated via a retrosigmoid or translabyrinthine approach in a 17-year period in one University Hospital. Association of CSF leak and petrous bone pneumatization, as seen on CT scans, was assessed on ANOVA and Student's t or Chi-squared test in case of non-pa

Disseminated cutaneous with nasopharyngeal rhinosporidiosis: Light microscopy changes following dapsone therapy.

We report a case of disseminated cutaneous and nasopharyngeal rhinosporidiosis in a 48-year-old man. The patient complained of a 6-month history of six subcutaneous skin-coloured swellings on the body and a 5-year history of a pea-sized swelling on the inner aspect of the left lower eyelid. Histopathological examination from one of these lesions showed multiple globular cysts packed with endospores that were typical of rhinosporidiosis. We report this case because of its rarity and to describe the morphological effects of dapsone in promotion of a host inflammatory response to the organism.

Cell body position of Drosophila Moonwalker Descending Neurons regulates locomotor circuit function.

Both mammalian and invertebrate nervous systems contain densely packed neuronal cell bodies in stereotyped locations, which express cell surface molecules and gap junction proteins. An open question that has rarely been addressed is: What role does cell body position play in neuronal circuit function? Here we show that the four adult Drosophila Moonwalker Descending Neurons (MDNs), command neurons for backward locomotion, must maintain cell body contact to initiate backward walking. MDNs express the transcription factor Hunchback, which drives expression of the cell adhesion molecule Lar. Hunc

Afferent synaptic changes in auditory hair cells during noise-induced temporary threshold shift.

This study presents evidence in support of the hypothesis that one of the sites of failure during noise-induced temporary threshold shift (TTS) is the afferent synapse between auditory hair cells and auditory nerve fibers. Our results show clear evidence indicating changes in the quantity of afferent synapses and the morphology of presynaptic structures in the alligator lizard auditory hair cells during TTS. In TTS hair cells there are statistically significant decreases in: 1) the number of afferent synapses, 2) the number of synaptic vesicles at the afferent synapses, 3) the size of synaptic

A comparison of the susceptibility of Djallonké sheep and West African Dwarf goats to experimental infection with two different strains of Trypanosoma congolense.

Two cloned strains of Trypanosoma congolense, of West and East African origin, were used to infect by intradermal inoculation two groups of young adult female Djallonké sheep and West African Dwarf goats. For a 3 month period post-infection, packed red cell volume (PCV), parasitaemia, body weight and clinical parameters were followed to evaluate their trypanotolerant nature and to control the pathogenicity of the two strains of T. congolense. Although the West African strain of T. congolense was more pathogenic than the East African strain, it seemed that the Djallonké sheep and the West Afric

Demonstration of Chlamydia trachomatis in colposcopic cervical biopsy specimens by an immunoperoxidase method.

A total of 31 cervical biopsy specimens were taken from 29 women attending a genitourinary medicine clinic, nine women (11 biopsy specimens) were known to have Chlamydia trachomatis cervicitis and 20 women were known to be free of chlamydial infection. The specimens were routinely processed to paraffin wax and stained by an anti-Chlamydia immunoperoxidase technique to localise the organisms. Of the 11 positive biopsy specimens three showed positive staining of elementary/reticulate bodies. In one case the surface endocervical cells showed large inclusions which were packed with chlamydial bodi
