CONTEXT: Arch height is one important aspect of foot posture. An estimated 20% of the population has pes planus and 20% has pes cavus. These abnormal foot postures can alter lower extremity kinematics and plantar loading and contribute to injury risk. Ankle bracing is commonly used in sport to prevent these injuries, but no researchers have examined the effects of ankle bracing on plantar loading.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the widespread use of bracing to correct Pectus carinatum (PC) there is no consensus in the number of hours per day patients are instructed to wear the brace. In our practice, we use a less rigorous protocol of 8-12h/day. We sought to evaluate our results and those in the literature to determine whether more intensive usage is necessary.
STUDY DESIGN: We reviewed the outcomes of patients with PC treated at our institution between 2012 and 2015. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science for studies describing the use of bracing to correct PC.

Forty-four patients with fifty-five scoliotic curves were studied to determine the efficacy of part-time bracing. All patients were skeletally immature at the initiation of treatment with the brace. All but one of the patients had a curve of at least 25 degrees that had shown 5 degrees of documented progression. The efficiency of a knee brace with a 0 degree-30 degrees range of motion was studied in 17 patients with anterior knee pain. Eighteen patients with identical symptoms served as controls. Thirty-seven cases of patellofemoral pain in young, active military recruits were studied. All patients were provided with an infrapatellar brace as a method of treatment. Nine patients (24%) demonstrated some improvement in symptoms at 1 week following application. Eight patients (22%) with maximum relief at 1 week were also shown to be symptom free at 1 year. Sternal fractures may be complicated by potentially fatal injuries with reported mortality rates between 25% and 45%. The use of a hip cast-brace in the treatment of unstable hips following prosthetic replacement is described. A retrospective study of 21 patients with 22 hip prostheses treated with the cast-brace is reported.
