Dynamic features of standing and their correlation with neurological disorders.

Standing posture is a result of complex activity of the human control system. Irregularities of postural control may be expected to result in deviations from normal standing. In the present study a ballistic monitoring technique was employed to establish criteria for assessment of postural disorders. Two "Kistler" force plate dynamometers were used to measure changes in the weight bearing components of each foot and displacement of the center of pressure of each foot. The patterns were analysed separately, and it was found that each of the monitored parameters demonstrated three modes of oscil

Long-term outcomes after new onset seizure in children living with HIV: A cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the long-term outcomes, including mortality and recurrent seizures, among children living with HIV (CLWH) who present with new onset seizure. METHODS: Zambian CLWH and new onset seizure were enrolled prospectively to determine the risk of and risk factors for recurrent seizures. Demographic data, clinical profiles, index seizure etiology, and 30-day mortality outcomes were previously reported. After discharge, children were followed quarterly to identify recurrent seizures and death. Given the high risk of early death, risk factors for recurrent seizure were evaluated

Galloway-Mowat syndrome: an early-onset progressive encephalopathy with intractable epilepsy associated to renal impairment. Two novel cases and review of literature.

Galloway-Mowat Syndrome (GMS) is an autosomal recessively inherited condition which manifests with severe encephalopathy, featuring microcephaly, developmental delay, and early-onset intractable epilepsy. Patients typically show also renal involvement from the onset. We report two siblings with GMS presenting with early-onset, intractable epilepsy and neurological deterioration, later followed by renal impairment. In both patients intractable epilepsy started during the first months of life and included a combination of spasms, focal and myoclonic/atonic seizures, along with psychomotor retard

The neurotoxicity of alcohol.

Patterns of drinking are changing throughout the world and in many countries this will be detrimental to the health and welfare of the local population. Even uncomplicated alcoholics who have no specific neurological or hepatic problems show signs of regional brain damage and cognitive dysfunction. Many of these changes are exaggerated and other brain regions damaged in patients who have additional vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency (Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome). Quantitative neuropathology techniques and improvements in neuroimaging have contributed significantly to the documentation of these c

[Isoprostanes and oxidative stress in brain damage in newborns].

Isoprostanes are a family of biologically active molecules recently characterized, which is emerging as a new class of specific and reliable markers of in vivo and ex vivo lipid peroxidation and oxidative damage. These molecules are stable, relatively abundant and easily detectable by sensitive and specific analytical methods. In the last years, the measurement of their levels in tissue homogenates or biological fluids has significantly improved our knowledge on the involvement of oxidative stress in several neurological diseases. Here we present evidence indicating that isoprostanes can be su

The Charles Bonnet syndrome: 'phantom visual images'.

The Charles Bonnet syndrome is a condition in which individuals experience complex visual hallucinations without demonstrable psychopathology or disturbance of normal consciousness. An analysis of the sixty-four cases described in the literature reveals that the syndrome can occur at any age though it is more common in elderly people. Reduction in vision, due to peripheral eye pathology as well as pathology within the brain, is associated with the syndrome. Individual hallucinatory episodes can last from a few seconds to most of the day. Episodes can occur for periods of time ranging from days

Personal relevance and the human right hemisphere.

Brain damage can selectively disrupt or distort information and ability across the range of human behaviors. One domain that has not been considered as an independent attribute consists of acquisition and maintenance of personal relevant entities such as "familiar" faces, persons, voices, names, linguistic expressions, handwriting, topography, and so on. In experimental studies of normal mentation, personal relevance is revealed in studies of emotion, arousal, affect, preference and familiarity judgments, and memory. Following focal brain damage, deficits and distortions in the experience of p

The executive and ideational components of apraxia.

Fifty six left brain-damaged (LBD) patients and 38 right brain-damaged (RBD) patients were requested to perform two measures of praxis using the hand ipsilateral to the side of lesion. One task required the accurate imitation of actions made by the examiner and taxed executive abilities; the other task required the patient to pantomime the use of objects that were shown, but not handed, and it also involved an ideational component, i.e., the evocation of gestures. The cut-off point discriminating a normal from a pathological performance was set at the level of the poorest score found in 60 con

Faces interfere with name classification in a prosopagnosic patient.

Since sustaining a severe closed head injury P.H. has been completely unable to recognise familiar faces, but remains able to identify written names. Despite his inability to recognise faces overtly, P.H. nevertheless shows a normal pattern of interference from simultaneously presented distractor faces in a politician vs nonpolitician name classification task. His reaction times for semantic (politician versus nonpolitician) classification of printed names are slowed by the presence of a face drawn from the incorrect semantic category. This interference is found even though P.H. performs at ch

Topical review of the WISC-R for pediatric neuroclinicians.

This article will familiarize neuroclinicians with the WISC-R and with the results of countless research studies on this popular test of the intelligence of children and adolescents. In addition to a description of the WISC-R and its subtests, and a discussion of the WISC-R from a historical context, the article reviews research in the following areas: relationship of the WISC-R to Wechsler's preschool and adult scales; interpretation of verbal-performance IQ differences; clinical implications of scatter; relationship of an IQ score to present and future functioning; and comparison of IQs on t

Dealing with the brain-damaged old--dignity before sanctity.

The present and future rapid increase in the hospital population of geriatric patients is discussed with particular reference to the problem of advanced brain degeneration. The consequences of various clinical management options are outlined and it is suggested that extreme attempts either to preserve or terminate life are medically, morally and socially unacceptable. The preservation of life in senile patients has important economic consequences. In achieving a decision on the medical management of patients with advanced brain decay it is suggested that substantial help would be derived from:

Sequential intellectual recovery after near-drowning.

Sequential neurological and intellectual recovery after childhood near-drowning is discussed. Decisions concerning the persistence and intensity of resuscitation require a knowledge of the natural history of intellectual improvement after rescue from near-drowning. A severe case of fresh-water immersion, leading to recovery, is described. Evidence is presented to suggest that the time interval of one hour before the first spontaneous respiratory gasp forms the upper limit of the apnoeic time bracket after which survival can still be expected, and to indicate that intellectual improvement (to a
