Gangliogliomas represent the most frequent tumor entity in young patients suffering from chronic focal epilepsies. In a series of 326 gangliogliomas collected from the University of Bonn Epilepsy Surgery Program and other departments of neuropathology in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, epidemiological findings and histopathological hallmarks of gangliogliomas are systematically reviewed. The majority of these tumors occur within the temporal lobe and reveal a biphasic histological architecture characterized by a combination of dysplastic neurons and neoplastic glial cell elements. However,

Despite 2-staged stereotactic radiosurgery (2-SSRS) has been reported to provide patients with improved survival and limited toxicity, 2-SSRS for brainstem metastases (BSM) larger than 2 cm3 remains challenging. We tried to find out the effectiveness and safety of 2-SSRS plus bevacizumab therapy for BSMs over 2 cm3 and prognostic factors that related to the tumor local control. Patients that received 2-SSRS plus bevacizumab therapy from four gamma knife center were retrospectively studied from Jan 2014 to December 2023. Patients' domestic characteristics and the tumor features were evaluated b

Histones form chromatin and play a key role in the regulation of gene expression. As an epigenetic information form, histone modifications such as methylation, phosphorylation, acetylation, and ubiquitination are closely related to the regulation of genes. In the last two decades, cancer scientists discovered that some histone modifications, including acetylation and methylation, are perturbed in cancer diseases. Recurrent histone mutations, which hinder histone methylation and are implicated in oncogenesis, are recently identified in several cancer disease and called oncohistones. Well-known

PURPOSE: Diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPGs) arise in the pons and are the leading cause of death from brain tumors in children. DIPGs are routinely treated with radiation therapy, which temporarily improves neurological symptoms but generally fails to achieve local control. Because numerous clinical trials have not improved survival from DIPG over standard radiation therapy alone, there is a pressing need to evaluate new therapeutic strategies for this devastating disease. Vascular damage caused by radiation therapy can increase the permeability of tumor blood vessels and promote tumor

Angiocentric glioma is a rare brain tumor commonly found in frontal or temporal lobes. It has a benign course, and surgical resection can be curative. Brainstem location is extremely rare, with only six cases reported so far in the literature. In the present study, the seventh case of brainstem angiocentric glioma has been reported, and its course in comparison with supratentorial location and the role of molecular diagnosis has been discussed.

Brainstem gliomas are neoplasms primarily affecting children. Depending on the type, they usually present with varying combination of multiple bilateral or unilateral cranial nerve palsies, long-tract signs, ataxia and sometimes hydrocephalus. Though movement disorders have been reported in association with basal ganglia and thalamic tumours, hemi-chorea, as a presentation of brainstem glioma, has not been reported till date. I present a case of a 9-year-old female child, who presented with complaints of difficulty in walking and involuntary movements affecting the left upper and lower limb. O

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Neurocytomas are typically located within the supratentorial ventricular system. Extraventricular neurocytomas are very rare, and this is only the second reported case of a pontine neurocytoma. We discuss the clinical presentation, histology, and treatment of these rare tumors.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old man presented with a 4-month history of headache and unilateral facial and distal extremity paresthesia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans demonstrated a 2.6 x 2.2-cm ring-enhancing cystic mass in the right pons.
INTERVENTION: MRI-guided stereotactic

PURPOSE: Second malignant neoplasms (SMNs) after diagnosis of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are rare events.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed data on risk factors and outcomes of 642 children with SMNs occurring after treatment for ALL from 18 collaborative study groups between 1980 and 2007.
RESULTS: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML; n = 186), myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS; n = 69), and nonmeningioma brain tumor (n = 116) were the most common types of SMNs and had the poorest outcome (5-year survival rate, 18.1% ± 2.9%, 31.1% ± 6.2%, and 18.3% ± 3.8%, respectively). Five-year sur

Objective: To analyze the clinicopathologic characteristics of poorly-differentiated chordoma with INI1 loss in children and to discuss the differential diagnosis. Methods: The clinical, radiological, histopathological profiles and molecular pathologic characteristics of two pediatric poorly differentiated chordoma cases with INI1 loss were reviewed. Results: The patients were a girl and a boy. Both lesions involved the slope. Both patients were presented with progressive muscle weakness or neck pain. Radiological examination showed clivus bone destruction and compression of the brain stem and

Following the progressive occurrence of a central vestibular syndrome in a 9 year old female dog, the diagnosis of a compressive lesion was confirmed by cerebrospinal fluid analysis (C.S.F.) and by computerized axial tomography (C.T.). The C.T.Scan revealed a large tumor occupying two thirds of the posterior fossa on the right side. A direct surgical approach to the right side of the posterior fossa revealed a large, friable mass, consistent with a meningioma, underneath the cerebellum, over the brain stem. Microscopic surgical dissection permitted the removal of the major part of the tumor. T

Diffuse intrinsic brain stem gliomas (DIPGs) with characteristic K27M mutation of H3.3 are lethal and poorly understood childhood cancers. In this issue of Cancer Cell, Larson et al. exploit a unique murine DIPG model with inducible, endogenous K27M expression to reveal insights into mechanisms of K27M-mediated transformation in DIPG.

Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is a rare but uniformly fatal cancer of the brain, with peak incidence in children of 5-7 years of age. In contrast to most types of human cancer, there has been no significant improvement in treatment outcomes for patients with DIPG. Since DIPG occurs in the brainstem, a vital region of the brain, there are no surgical options for providing relief to patients, and chemotherapy as well as radiation therapy provide palliative relief at best. To date, more than 250 clinical trials evaluating radiotherapy along with conventional cytotoxic chemotherapy, as w

OBJECTIVE Recent studies have shed light on the molecular makeup of diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas and led to the identification of potential treatment targets for these lesions, which account for the majority of pediatric brainstem tumors (pedBSTs). Therefore, stereotactic biopsy-driven molecular characterization of pedBSTs may become an important prerequisite for the management of these fatal brain tumors. The authors conducted a systemic review and meta-analysis to precisely determine the safety and diagnostic success of stereotactic biopsy of pedBSTs. METHODS A systematic search of PubM

INTRODUCTION: Tectal plate gliomas are generally benign neoplastic lesions arising in the brainstem which can, with local extension, obstruct the aqueduct of Sylvius and lead to hydrocephalus.
ANATOMY: Diagnosis is based on initial suspicion fostered by the presentation of an obstructive hydrocephalus followed by physical exam which may potentially reveal indications of pyramidal tract dysfunction or cranial nerve palsies.
DISCUSSION: MRI studies reveal a characteristic well-circumscribed, isodense or hypodense mass on T1-weighted images, with hyperdensity on T2 imaging. Yet current radiolog
