Burns in Incarcerated Adults: A 10-Year Retrospective Review From an Australian Quaternary Burns Centre.

BACKGROUND: Burn injuries sustained in custodial settings are poorly characterised within the Australian literature despite unique environmental and behavioural risk factors associated with incarceration. Scald burns related to interpersonal violence appear increasingly recognised within correctional facilities; however, their clinical characteristics, management requirements and outcomes remain inadequately described. This study aimed to characterise burns sustained by incarcerated adults treated at an Australian quaternary burns centre. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted of…

Comparing mortality outcomes of major burns and toxic epidermal necrolysis in a tertiary burns centre.

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to provide descriptive information to burn clinicians, who have extensive experience treating major burns and determining prognosis, as to whether significant differences in mortality exist between major burns injuries and the comparatively less common toxic epidermal necrolysis for a given age and total body surface area percentage. METHODS: Retrospective data was analyzed of all deceased patients admitted to the Victorian Adult Burns Service in Melbourne, Australia over a period of 10 years with greater than 30% total body surface area burned or greater than 30% to…

Burns sustained in combat explosions in Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF explosion burns).

BACKGROUND: Burns comprise 5% of casualties evacuated from Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom (OIF and OEF). Many OIF/OEF burns result from the enemy's detonation of explosives. We reviewed these to evaluate mission impact and provide recommendations for improved combat burn protection. Data were compared to those from the Vietnam War. METHODS: All OIF/OEF patients with significant burns are treated at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (ISR). A review from April 2003 to April 2005 was undertaken. Records were obtained and demographics, burn severity and pattern, and early outcom…

Neonatal burns: a 10-year review of community- and hospital-acquired neonatal burns in Western Australia.

BACKGROUND: There are very few studies in the literature focusing on neonatal burns, and to our knowledge this is the largest study on this topic. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted over a 10-year period from 2010 to 2020 to investigate the incidence, mechanisms involved and outcomes for burn injuries in neonates in Western Australia. This study included children aged 4 weeks or younger who sustained a burns injury requiring admission to hospital or during their hospital admission. Premature infants who sustained burns during a hospital admission in the neonatal intensive care unit…

Post burn pruritus in pediatric burn patients.

BACKGROUND: Pruritus is a common problem seen in the healing process of a burn wound and gives great discomfort for the patient. Most research in this field has been done in the adult population, so evidence in the pediatric population is still lacking PURPOSE: The aims of this study were to assess the incidence and severity of post-burn pruritus, identify predictors for pruritus and evaluate the pharmacological treatments in a pediatric setting. METHODS: Pruritus was assessed in this prospective observational study using a numeric rating scale and the Itch Man Scale applied by the patients'

Management of Acute Hand Burns: A Survey of American Burn Association-Verified Burn Centers.

Hand burns have a significant impact on the long-term function of burn patients. Recently, new protocols and technologies, such as dermal substitutes, have been introduced for the treatment of hand burns. This cross-sectional study investigates the preferred current management of acute hand burns and the role of dermal substitutes in treatment. A 10-question survey related to acute hand burns management was sent to 64 directors of American Burn Association (ABA)-verified burn centers. A total of 51.6% (n = 33) directors of ABA-verified burn centers responded to the survey. For the treatment of…

Burn healing is dependent on burn site: a quantitative analysis from a porcine burn model.

This retrospective review examines healing in different sites on a porcine burn model; 24 pairs of burns on 18 pigs from other animal trials were selected for analysis. Each pair of burns was located on the either the cranial or the caudal part of the thoracic ribs region, on the same side of the animal. The burns were 40-50 cm(2) in size and of uniform deep-dermal partial thickness. Caudal burns healed significantly better than cranial burns, demonstrated by earlier closure of wounds, less scar formation and better cosmesis. To our knowledge, this is the first detailed study reporting that bu…

Burning Mouth Syndrome and "Burning Mouth Syndrome".

Burning mouth syndrome is distressing to both the patient and practitioner unable to determine the cause of the patient's symptoms. Burning mouth syndrome is a diagnosis of exclusion, which is used only after nutritional deficiencies, mucosal disease, fungal infections, hormonal disturbances and contact stomatitis have been ruled out. This article will explore the many causes and treatment of patients who present with a chief complaint of "my mouth burns," including symptomatic treatment for those with burning mouth syndrome.

The media glorifying burns: a hindrance to burn prevention.

The media have a profound influence on the actions of children and adults. Burns and burn prevention tend to be ignored or even mocked. The purpose of this presentation is to reveal the callousness of the media in its dealings with burns and burn prevention. Printed materials with a relationship to burns, risk of burning, or disrespect for the consequences of burns were collected. The materials were tabulated into four categories: comics, advertisements (ads), articles that made light of burns, and television shows that portrayed behavior that would risk burn injury. Most burn-related material…

Social media challenges associated paediatric burns.

INTRODUCTION: The emerging social media trend of "challenges" encourages users to participate in and share videos of potentially dangerous activities. Social media challenge-related paediatric burn injuries are poorly documented in medical literature. This study aims to explore the incidence of challenge-related paediatric burns within our service. METHOD: A retrospective case note review of the incidence of paediatric burn cases in our service, in which "social media challenges" were identified as a mechanism of injury, from January 2020 to August 2025. Data collected from electronic patient…
