We describe a new operative procedure for patients with chronic trochanteric bursitis. Between March 1994 and May 2000, a trochanteric reduction osteotomy was performed on ten patients (12 hips). All had received conservative treatment for at least one year. Previous surgical treatment with a longitudinal release of the iliotibial band combined with excision of the trochanteric bursa had been performed on five hips. None had responded to these treatments. The mean follow-up was 23.5 months (6 to 77). The mean Merle d'Aubigné and Postel score improved from 15.8 (8 to 20) before to 27.5 (18 to 3…

In patients with septic bursitis the indications for admission and surgical intervention remain unclear, and practice has varied widely. The effectiveness of a conservative outpatient based approach was assessed by an outcome study in a prospective case series. Consecutive patients attending an emergency department with acute swelling of the olecranon or prepatellar bursa were managed according to a structured approach, subjective and objective outcomes being assessed after two to three days, and subsequently as required until clinical discharge. Long-term outcomes were assessed by telephone f…

BACKGROUND: Bursal fluid accumulations are not usually associated with skin disease; however, several cases have been observed in a large atopic dermatitis (AD) clinic.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to characterize the clinical features of bursitis in AD and to assess the evidence for a mechanistic association between these conditions.
METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the clinical presentation of bursitis in six adults with lifelong severe AD. The course of the bursitis and possible causative factors were assessed for each patient.
RESULTS: Ten episodes of bursitis were documented in six patien…

Contrast radiography, using a 25 per cent solution of sodium diatrizoate, has been used for the investigation of tenosynovitis and bursitis in horses. The procedure was undertaken on a series of 32 clinical cases and on specimens obtained at autopsy. Lesions affecting the extensor tendon sheaths at the carpus, the digital sheath, the tarsal sheath and the bursae at the elbow, hock and fetlock were examined by this means. The results showed the procedure offered the clinician useful information about the nature of the interior of these structures, particularly as regards the presence of adhesio…

Evidence-Based Treatment and Differential Diagnoses of Olecranon Bursitis Abstract. Bursitis olecrani is a common clinical diagnosis that can have systemic, infectious and traumatic causes. In this article we want to present the diagnostics, possible differential diagnoses, complications and the current therapy recommendations as a practical guide.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and effect of triamcinolone acetonide (TA) injection for lateral malleolar (LM) bursitis.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data of 49 consecutive patients (49 ankles) who received TA injection between March 2016 and March 2019. All cases received 1 ml (40 mg) of TA injection after aspiration of fluid in the LM bursal sac. Subsequently, the ankle was compressed with an elastic cohesive bandage for 2 weeks. Treatment responses were assessed according to the degree of fluctuation, shrinkage of the bursal sac, and soft tissue swelling. We …

Pterygoid hamular bursitis is a rare craniofacial pain syndrome used to describe palatal and pharyngeal pain due to an enlarged pterygoid hamulus. The pterygoid hamulus is a hook-shaped bony process located bilaterally on each medial pterygoid plate of the sphenoid bone, posterior and medial to each maxillary tuberosity. These processes project downward and anterolaterally; serve as attachment for ligaments and a network of muscles. It can be palpated in patients with a finger palpating the posteromedial to maxillary tuberosity. The pathogenesis is elusive and varies from bursitis of tensor ve…

Objectives Bursitis of the olecranon and the patella are not rare disorders, and conservative management is successful in most cases. However, when patients do not respond to conservative treatment, open excisional surgery or, recently, endoscopic bursectomy, can be used. The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of open and endoscopic treatments of olecranon and prepatellar bursitis. Patients and methods Forty-nine patients (37 male and 12 female), who were treated with endoscopic bursectomy (25 patients) or open bursectomy (24 patients) were included in this study. Thirty patients ha…

While hospitalized with polymyositis, a medically complex 56-year-old male experienced an acute exacerbation of gout. Both ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging cross-sectional modalities were used to detect, localize, and characterize a soft tissue mass. The tumor was ultimately found to be secondary to gouty inflammation of the pes anserine bursa, a previously unrecognized manifestation of acute gout.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical effectiveness of debridement in treatment of Pes anserinus bursitis under arthroscopy by comparing the curative effect of three therapies: local block therapy, open operation and debridement under arthroscopy.
METHODS: From January 2000 to January 2007, 90 cases of unilateral Pes anserinus bursitis were treated with debridement under arthroscopy (group A, n=30), local block therapy (group B, n=30) and open operation (group C, n=30), respectively. The group A included 18 males and 12 females, aged (40.0 +/- 2.5) years old; the locations were left knee in 16 c…

Bursal infection is an uncommon clinical presentation of brucellosis. We herein report a case of Brucella melitensis bursitis that was successfully treated. Other reported cases of brucella bursitis were reviewed. A high degree of suspicion in the right clinical setting is required for the diagnosis of brucella bursitis.

Elbow and knee bursitis is common in both athletes and nonathletes and has three basic presentations: acute, chronic nonseptic, and chronic infected. Most acute swellings occur after trauma and can be treated with early aspiration, compression, and padding. Chronic, nonseptic bursitis can usually be treated with conservative therapy and, occasionally, aspiration or corticosteroid injection. Inflamed bursae should be aggressively evaluated and treated. Some may require aspiration and decompression, and oral or intravenous antibiotics should be started to prevent septicemia. Incision and drainag…
