Differentiating between Traumatic Pathology and Congenital Variant: A Case Report of Butterfly Vertebra.

Butterfly vertebra is a rare congenital malformation of the spine, which is usually reported in the literature as an isolated finding. We describe a 40-year-old woman that presented to our emergency department with back pain and sciatica. Initial radiological evaluation revealed an incidental finding of a L4 butterfly vertebra in the anteroposterior and lateral view radiographs. The patient presented with no neurological deficit. This rare congenital anomaly is usually asymptomatic, and awareness of its non-traumatic nature is critical in order to establish a correct diagnosis. Further evaluat

Atrial septostomy using a butterfly stent in a patient with severe pulmonary arterial hypertension.

We describe a patient with severe pulmonary artery hypertension and refractory right heart failure who underwent "butterfly" stent atrial septostomy guided by intracardiac ultrasound. This technique may be superior to previously reported blade and balloon septostomy because it allows creation of an atrial septal defect of a precise predetermined diameter. The patient's systemic blood flow and clinical status improved significantly after the procedure, allowing her to be accepted as a candidate for lung transplantation.

Vertical stratification and seasonality of fruit-feeding butterfly diversity in a Neotropical dry forest.

Vertical stratification and climatic seasonality influence the structuring of butterfly communities in tropical forests. This study assessed how vertical stratification (canopy vs. understory) and seasonal variation affect fruit-feeding butterfly (Nymphalidae) assemblages in a Brazilian tropical dry forest (TDF), and how these patterns relate to climatic variables and food resource availability. Sampling was conducted monthly over one year in the northern Espinhaço Range, within the Caatinga domain. Twenty 25 × 4 m plots were established, each with two Van Someren-Rydon traps (understory at 1

Heated debate: Is the seasonal polyphenism of the map butterfly Araschnia levana driven by thermoregulation?

The seasonal forms of the temperate butterfly Araschnia levana (Nymphalidae: Nymphalinae) differ in mass, wing area, wing loading (i.e., the ratio of mass to wing area), and colouration. Spring individuals are predominantly orange with higher wing loading while summer individuals are black with a white stripe and have lower wing loading. However, it remains unclear if and how these seasonal differences affect heating and cooling dynamics. We compared thermal responses of seasonal forms, focusing on the roles of morphology and colouration. Further, we assessed whether live butterflies heat and …

Space-time odd-symmetric Butterfly wave packets with multidimensional modulation properties.

Achieving multidimensional modulation and analysis of breathers in a local nonlinear medium is a highly significant research area. We present what we believe is the first investigation of space-time odd-symmetric Butterfly (STOSB) wave packets in a local nonlinear medium, focusing on their odd-symmetric focus and focal length control. Meanwhile, a completely new modulation method for breathers is proposed that can alter the intensity distribution of breathers in the X-Y plane while leaving the intensity distribution in the X-T and Y-T planes unchanged. Furthermore, both the unique self-healing

Technical note: A graft modification in butterfly cartilage myringoplasty using a triangular excision.

BACKGROUND: Butterfly myringoplasty is a simple and effective technique for small-to-moderate, non-marginal tympanic membrane perforations. Various modifications of the graft have been described. However, when the residual tympanic membrane is thin, it may tear during graft placement. METHODS: Inspired by the Paparella type 2 ventilation tube, we applied a minor modification to the cartilage graft in butterfly myringoplasty. A small triangular excision was made on the medial wing of the graft, allowing controlled rotational insertion through the perforation while preserving the integrity of t

Butterfly Traction: A New Standardized Approach for Gallbladder Bed Detachment in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Gallbladder bed detachment (GBB-D) in laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) lacks a standardized technique. We developed butterfly traction (BT) to perform optimal GBB-D. This study evaluates its effectiveness and potential for standardization. METHODS: BT aligns the dissection axis with the surgeon's dominant hand by positioning the gallbladder upright and using a left-sided lateral approach. This improves right-side mobility, enabling horizontal traction and avoiding axis interference. BT has been adopted in all LCs at our institution since July 2023. Among 118 LCs performed from

The butterfly effect: Restoring the tricuspid coaptation after clipping the antero-septal commissure.

Edge-to-edge tricuspid transcatheter repair requires extensive echocardiographic planning before the procedure. Sometimes, anatomic features may anticipate a suboptimal result. For this reason, a tailored strategy is the key to the procedural success. We report a case of massive tricuspid regurgitation due to multiple complex mechanisms that was successfully treated by clipping the antero-septal commissure to restore functional coaptation of the valve leaflets at multiple sites.

Butterfly adrenal gland with maldevelopment of the mesonephric duct: A rare association in an adult patient.

Adrenal gland disorders can be asymptomatic and detected incidentally via imaging techniques such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Fusion anomaly is a condition that can be attributed to errors in the developmental process and may be detected via these imaging modalities. We present a case of butterfly adrenal gland in a 61-year-old man with CT and magnetic resonance images. In our patient, this anomaly is also accompanied by unilateral renal agenesis and a diaphragmatic defect. Positron emission tomography-CT, contrast-enha

Butterfly cartilage tympanoplasty: an alternative new technique instead of conventional surgery method.

Butterfly graft inlay tympanoplasty is a well-established technique for the repair of small- and medium-sized perforations. There are some difficulties with application of conventional butterfly technique and it affects our success rate of graft healing. With some modifications of graft preparation we can make better success rates. The aim of this study was to present the new renovation of conventional method, describe about what kind of changes we made and its technical facilities about the procedure. The study design is a prospective case series. This study was carried out on 18 patients who

Rearrangement of a P4 Butterfly Complex-The Formation of a Homoleptic Phosphorus-Iron Sandwich Complex.

The versatile coordination behavior of the P4 butterfly complex [{Cp'''Fe(CO)2 }2 (μ,η1:1 -P4 )] (1, Cp'''=η5 -C5 H2t Bu3 ) towards different iron(II) compounds is presented. The reaction of 1 with [FeBr2 ⋅dme] (dme=dimethoxyethane) leads to the chelate complex [{Cp'''Fe(CO)2 }2 (μ3 ,η1:1:2 -P4 ){FeBr2 }] (2), whereas, in the reaction with [Fe(CH3 CN)6 ][PF6 ]2 , an unprecedented rearrangement of the P4 butterfly structural motif leads to the cyclo-P4 moiety in {(Cp'''Fe(CO)2 )2 (μ3 ,η1:1:4 -P4 )}2 Fe][PF6 ]2 (3). Complex 3 represents the first fully characterized "carbon-free" sandwich comple

Retroaortic Variant of Reverse Horseshoe Kidney With Butterfly Vertebrae Presenting as Neurogenic Bladder.

Horseshoe kidney is a relatively common congenital anomaly. In 95% of the cases, lower poles are connected to each other. In a small subset, an isthmus connects both upper poles (reverse horseshoe kidney). Almost always, the fusion of kidney poles occurs anterior to the aorta and vena cava. The fusion of renal poles posterior to both aorta and vena cava is extremely rare. Herein, we present a case with multiple rare congenital anomalies-retroaortic variant of reverse horseshoe kidney, retroaortic left renal vein, and butterfly vertebrae.

VACTERL association with a rare vertebral anomaly (butterfly vertebra) in a case of monochorionic twin.

The VATER/VACTERL association is typically defined by the presence of at least three of the following congenital malformations: vertebral anomalies, anal atresia, cardiac malformations, tracheo-esophageal fistula, renal anomalies, and limb abnormalities (13). We report a rare case of a monochorionic twin gestation in which one of the infants had VACTERL association. Antenatal ultrasound showed bilateral renal dysplasia and cardiac anomaly (ASD) in twin A. Twin A was noted to have the following anomalies: a single umbilical artery, limb anomaly (right hand preaxial polydactyly), vertebral anoma
