The tris(2-mercapto-1-methylbenzimidazolyl)hydroborato cadmium complexes, {[Tm(MeBenz)]Cd(μ-Cl)}2 and [Tm(MeBenz)]CdI, have been synthesized via the reactions of [Tm(MeBenz)]K with CdCl2 and CdI2, respectively. While X-ray diffraction studies demonstrate that the iodide derivative, [Tm(MeBenz)]CdI, is a monomer, the chloride derivative, {[Tm(MeBenz)]Cd(μ-Cl)}2, exists as a dimer, which is unprecedented for Group 12 [Tm(R)]MX (X = Cl, Br, I) compounds. Hexagonal cadmium selenide nanorods 32-170 nm in length and 12-28 nm in diameter were grown by a solvothermal technique by reacting cadmium chloride and selenium powders in ethylenediamine at 140 degrees C. Using electron microscopy, the shape, size, and crystal structure of the nanorods were determined. A detailed microscopy analysis revealed that the nanorods grow through the coalescence of very small particles or fiberlike structures of the compound. The size, shape and strain structures in the nanorods are defined by their growth mechanism.

The cadmium cation, located on an inversion center, is octa-hedrally coordinated by four Cl atoms at equatorial sites and two N atoms from two ligands at the axial sites. Cd atoms are bridged by Cl atoms, forming extended chains parallel to [010]. Neighboring chains are connected by N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds.

The effects of lead, cadmium, and mercury chloride salts on survival and infectivity of Schistosoma mansoni cercariae were examined. The LC 50 for 5 hr exposure was approximately 500 microM for lead, 2.5 microM for cadmium, and 6 microM for mercury. These toxicity figures are significantly higher than the levels of these heavy metals reported to occur in the natural waters of Egypt where schistosome transmission occurs. Infectivity of cercariae surviving exposure to metals at the LC 50 was reduced to approximately one-half that of control mice infected with unexposed cercariae.
