Study on soil improvement and microbial diversity restoration in metals-contaminated mining areas.

The ecological and environmental issues caused by uncontrolled mining in metal-rich areas have raised significant concerns, particularly reg … best reduced Pb and Zn. QYSH also increased bacterial diversity. Spearman correlation analysis and canonical correlation analysis (CCA) linked soil pH, organic matter, key nutrients, and enzyme activities to dominant phyla (e.g., Planctomycetes, Actinobacteria). In conclusion, amendments effectively restored soil quality and microbial communities, offering a scientific basis f …

A novel perspective on biomarkers of neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation in first episode psychosis: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The biological distinction between first-episode psychosis (FEP) and chronic schizophrenia remains unclear. This study investigated a panel of non-canonical serum biomarkers related to neurodegeneration, neuroinflammation, and neurotrophic signaling across these clinical stages. METHODS: In a cross-sectional design, serum concentrations of 18 biomarkers were measured using multiplex immunoassay in 49 FEP patients, 80 patients with chronic schizophrenia (SCH), and 80 healthy controls (CON). Principal component analysis identified two major axes (neuroinflammatory-neurotrophic and s

Exposome factors predict the association between sleep health and depression.

BACKGROUND: Sleep health and depression are multidimensional constructs, yet their shared determinants remain obscure. We aim to identify the key exposome factors in predicting sleep-related depression (SRD). METHODS: We integrated regularized canonical correlation analysis with machine-learning models within a nested cross-validation to identify a shared phenotype (i.e., sleep-related depression (SRD)) and to predict SRD from exposome factors in the UK Biobank (n = 64,781). The best-performing model was validated in an independent subsample at baseline and follow-up (n = 8,139) and in a clin…

Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy restored distinctive resting-state networks in patients with essential tremor.

OBJECTIVE: Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) thalamotomy ameliorates symptoms in patients with essential tremor (ET). How this treatment affects canonical brain networks has not been elucidated. The purpose of this study was to clarify changes of brain networks after MRgFUS thalamotomy in ET patients by analyzing resting-state networks (RSNs). METHODS: Fifteen patients with ET were included in this study. Left MRgFUS thalamotomy was performed in all cases, and MR images, including resting-state functional MRI (rsfMRI), were taken before and after surgery. MR images of 15 a

Attachment and Personality Disorders Among Child Molesters: The Role of Trust.

The present study investigated multivariate associations between attachment styles and personality disorders (PDs)-and the mediating role of trust-in a sample of child molesters ( n = 84) and a matched control group from the general community ( n = 80). Among child molesters, canonical correlation analysis revealed that two variates resembling avoidant and anxious attachment dimensions were associated with PD traits. Attachment avoidance was related to schizoid, schizotypal, and avoidant PDs, with a marginal contribution of antisocial PD. Attachment anxiety was related to borderline and histri…

Pancreatic cancer fibrosis activates protumorigenic Schwann cells through a nuclear mechanosensing mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Fibrosis and tumour innervation are two features of the tumour microenvironment (TME) that contribute directly to the lethality of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), but their potential interactions have not been explored. Moreover, although it is known that activated Schwann cells (SCs) stimulate cancer cell invasion, it remains unclear how SCs are activated. OBJECTIVE: We determined how SCs are activated in the pancreatic fibrotic microenvironment. DESIGN: The correlation between physical features of the microenvironment and SC activation was assessed in human patient sam

In Vivo Tracking of Streptococcal Infections of Subcutaneous Origin in a Murine Model.

PURPOSE: Generation of plasmin in vivo by Streptococcus pyogenes is thought to localize the active protease complexes to the pathogen surface to aid in tissue dissemination. Here, we chose to follow cutaneous streptococcal infections by the use of non-invasive bioluminescence imaging to determine if this pathogen can be followed by this approach and the extent of bacterial spread in the absence of canonical plasminogen activation by streptokinase. PROCEDURES: Mice were injected subcutaneously with either bioluminescent strains of streptococci, namely Xen20 and Xen10 or S. pyogenes ALAB49. Bio

Movement Symmetry Assessment by Bilateral Motion Data Fusion.

OBJECTIVE: A new approach, named bilateral motion data fusion, was proposed for the analysis of movement symmetry, which takes advantage of cross-information between both sides of the body and processes the unilateral motion data at the same time. METHODS: This was accomplished using canonical correlation analysis and joint independent component analysis. It should be noted that human movements include many categories, which cannot be enumerated one by one. Therefore, the gait rhythm fluctuations of the healthy subjects and patients with neurodegenerative diseases were employed as an example …

Distinct neuroanatomical correlates of interference-related verbal episodic memory test in healthy older adults.

Verbal learning test can include a trial of interference process that intrude initial learning and impose additional cognitive stress. However, it has been unclear whether the multiple memory processes underly different brain structural bases. We measured performances of word retrieval that represents distinct memory processes (initial learning, interference, and retention) and regional gray matter morphology from 230 cognitively unimpaired older adults. We identified three distinct multivariate pattern modes using canonical correlation analysis that map correspondence between memory and brain…

Convolution power spectrum analysis for FMRI data based on prior image signal.

Functional MRI (fMRI) data-processing methods based on changes in the time domain involve, among other things, correlation analysis and use of the general linear model with statistical parametric mapping (SPM). Unlike conventional fMRI data analysis methods, which aim to model the blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) response of voxels as a function of time, the theory of power spectrum (PS) analysis focuses completely on understanding the dynamic energy change of interacting systems. We propose a new convolution PS (CPS) analysis of fMRI data, based on the theory of matched filtering, to detec

vtRNA1-1/p62 regulates macrophages autophagy in ankylosing spondylitis.

This research aims to investigate the role and mechanisms of the vtRNA1-1/p62 molecular axis in the regulation of autophagy in AS, with the goal of identifying novel diagnostic and therapeutic targets for AS. Clinical sample analysis revealed that the transcription levels of vtRNA1-1 and p62 decreased in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of the AS group; conversely, the levels of canonical autophagy-related genes (ATG3, ATG5) and inflammatory factors (TNF-α) significantly increased. Correlation analysis revealed that vtRNA1-1 levels were positively associated with p62 but were inv

Multimodal image analysis of clinical influences on preterm brain development.

OBJECTIVE: Premature birth is associated with numerous complex abnormalities of white and gray matter and a high incidence of long-term neurocognitive impairment. An integrated understanding of these abnormalities and their association with clinical events is lacking. The aim of this study was to identify specific patterns of abnormal cerebral development and their antenatal and postnatal antecedents. METHODS: In a prospective cohort of 449 infants (226 male), we performed a multivariate and data-driven analysis combining multiple imaging modalities. Using canonical correlation analysis, we s…

Melanoma cells release dysfunctional mitochondria to the tumor microenvironment and circulation in association with tumor progression.

Recent evidence establishes that melanoma cells actively uptake mitochondria from stromal cells; however, the mitochondrial release in a physiological context remains unstudied. Here, we show that melanoma cells release dysfunctional mitochondria into the extracellular space through a predominantly non-vesicular route. Using melanocyte Melan-a and melanoma B16-F1 and B16-F10 cell lines, we observed increased extracellular mitochondrial release in malignant cells. Electron microscopy revealed these mitochondria lacked cristae and were primarily free organelles. Membrane potential analysis confi

S100A14 promotes colorectal cancer progression and anti-PD-1 resistance via UPF1-mediated activation of the non-canonical NF-κB signaling.

Resistance to anti-PD-1 immunotherapy remains a critical challenge in colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the functional role of S100A14 in CRC remains controversial regarding its oncogenic status and impact on immunotherapy response. Here, integrating single-cell RNA sequencing and tissue microarray analysis, we definitively identify S100A14 as an oncogenic driver of immunotherapy resistance. High S100A14 expression correlates with poor prognosis and an immunosuppressive "cold" tumor phenotype. Mechanistically, S100A14 directly binds UPF1, a core nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) factor, promo

Comparison of alternate personality models in psychopathology assessment.

This study assessed the results from the parallel application of two alternate personality models, the Zuckerman-Kuhlman trait model and Bond's Defense Styles, in a sample of 268 Greek medical students (172 women, M age = 22.0 yr., SD = 1.1; 95 men, M age = 22.3 yr., SD = 1.2) in relation to psychopathological symptoms, so as to clarify whether this practice yielded accurate results while avoiding shared variance. Data from both models are cross-checked with canonical correlation analysis to validate whether there was significant conceptual overlap between them that would mean that their paral…
