Infection by Eucoleus aerophilus in dogs and cats: is another extra-intestinal parasitic nematode of pets emerging in Italy?

The occurrence of the infection by the lungworm Eucoleus aerophilus (syn. Capillaria aerophila) in dogs and cats from Italy has been evaluated with conventional diagnostic procedures. Individual faecal samples from 569 dogs and 200 cats were undertaken to faecal flotation with sugar and zinc sulphate solution. Sixteen dogs (2.8%) and 11 cats (5.5%) scored positive for eggs of E. aerophilus when samples were processed with either of the two flotation solutions. Overall 14 of 16 dogs and eight of 11 cats infected by E. aerophilus showed respiratory symptoms and the most common were general respi…

Capillariid nematodes in Brazilian turkeys, Meleagris gallopavo (Galliformes, Phasianidae): pathology induced by Baruscapillaria obsignata and Eucoleus annulatus (Trichinelloidea, Capillariidae).

The pathology induced in turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) by two capillariid nematodes, Baruscapillaria obsignata and Eucoleus annulatus is described together with data on prevalences, mean infection and range of worm burdens. B. obsignata occurred with a prevalence of 72.5% in the 40 examined hosts in a range of 2-461 nematodes and a mean intensity of 68.6, whereas E. annulatus was present in 2.5% of the animals, with a total amount of five recovered parasites. Gross lesions were not observed in the parasitized birds. Lesions due to B. obsignata mainly consisted of the thickening of intestinal v…

Examination of anonymous canine faecal samples provides data on endoparasite prevalence rates in dogs for comparative studies.

Several endoparasites of dogs cannot only be detrimental to their primary host but might also represent a threat to human health because of … lminth (1.8-7.5%) and Giardia the most frequent protozoan (4.0-10.8%). Ancylostomatidae, Crenosoma, Capillaria, Taeniidae, Cystoisospora and Sarcocystis were found in 1.8-2.2%, 0-0.9%, 0-0.9%, 0-0.6%, 0.3-3.1% and 0-0.6% of the samples, respectively. Samples from "dirty" dog zones in Vienna showed a significantly higher rate of parasites overall (p=0.003) an …

[Malabsorption syndrome and intestinal parasitosis].

In Dakar, through histopathological biopsies, the author looked for duodenal alterations in four parasitosis: giardiasis, strongyloidiasis, hookworms and ascaridiosis. He gives an overall survey on malabsorption in relation with intestinal parasitosis, including intestinal capillariosis and coccidiosis. He recalls basic concepts concerning each of these parasitic diseases, with a special mention to mucosal invasion and endogenous self reinfection during some parasitosis; he also emphasizes the importance of some diagnosis techniques (such as examination of duodenal fluid in relation to giardia

Zoonotic intestinal parasites and vector-borne pathogens in Italian shelter and kennel dogs.

This study investigated the presence of zoonotic parasites and vector-borne pathogens in dogs housed in kennels and shelters from four sites of Italy. A total of 150 adoptable dogs was examined with different microscopic, serological and molecular methods. Overall 129 dogs (86%) were positive for one or more parasites and/or pathogens transmitted by ectoparasites. Forty-eight (32%) were positive for one infection, while 81 (54%) for more than one pathogen. The most common zoonotic helminths recorded were hookworms, roundworms and Capillaria aerophila, followed by mosquito-borne Dirofilaria spp…

Fleas infesting pets in the era of emerging extra-intestinal nematodes.

Modifications in climatic conditions, movements of hosts and goods, changes in animal phenology and human behaviour and increase of wildlife, are presently concurring in the geographic spread of vectors and cardio-respiratory nematodes, e.g. Dirofilaria immitis, Angiostrongylus vasorum, Aelurostrongylus abstrusus and Capillaria aerophila. All these factors may also influence dispersion and clinical significance of fleas, thus posing relevant challenges in those regions where other parasites are emerging at the same time. Ctenocephalides felis, Ctenocephalides canis and Pulex irritans cause dis…

Antibody responses against Echinococcus multilocularis antigens in naturally infected Rattus norvegicus.

Two Norway rats, Rattus norvegicus, were found to be naturally infected with Echinococcus multilocularis in Japan. One of them was simultaneously infected with at least three different sized metacestodes of Taenia taeniaeformis. These two R. norvegicus rats and another R. norvegicus naturally infected with T. taeniaeformis and Capillaria hepatica were examined to see if they showed any antibody responses against these two cestode parasites with the view to obtaining more information on the importance of rats as the intermediate host for E. multilocularis. These R. norvegicus showed very poor a…

The endoscopic-pathologic findings in intestinal capillariais: a case report.

A 27-year-old Thai man presented with chronic watery diarrhea for 2 years. The diagnosis of capillariasis was made by enteroscopy after negative repeated stool tests. Here, the authors reported the first case of abnormal endoscopic finding of intestinal capillariasis. It showed segmental erythematous and swelling of proximal jejunal mucosa with an area of superficial erosion covered by exudates. The parasitic eggs were identified in jejunal content and worms were identified in jejunal mucosa. He was successfully treated with albendazole.

High Prevalence of Intestinal Capillariasis in Chronic Diarrhea Patients in Thailand: Serological Screening Using a Rapid Lateral-Flow Immunochromatographic Assay.

Intestinal capillariasis is an emerging fish-borne helminthic disease caused by the round worm Capillaria philippinensis. Chronic infection may lead to death if the disease is misdiagnosed and inappropriate treatment is given. We used a rapid lateral-flow immunochromatographic test for screening of intestinal capillariasis in patients with chronic diarrhea. We screened 292 chronic diarrhea patients who had visited hospitals in Thailand. Sixty-six (22.6%) cases were positive according to the kit. All positive patients received mebendazole at 200 mg twice per day for 30 consecutive days or alben…
