BACKGROUND: The association of a broad spectrum of infectious diseases with cardiovascular outcomes remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: We aim to provide the cardiovascular risk profiles associated with a wide range of infectious diseases and explore the extent to which infections reduce life expectancy.
METHODS: We ascertained exposure to 900+ infectious diseases before cardiovascular disease (CVD) onset in 453,102 participants from the UK Biobank study. Time-varying Cox proportional hazard models were used. Life table was used to estimate the life expectancy of individuals aged ≥50 with different

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 infection and vaccination have been reported to confer an elevated risk for cardiovascular events (CVE). We sought to determine whether individuals with an underlying vascular connective tissue disorder including Marfan syndrome (MFS), Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS), or vascular Ehlers Danlos syndrome (vEDS) are at increased risk for cardiac events after COVID-19 infection or vaccination.
METHODS: 325 respondents self-reported data through a cross-sectional, web-based survey available from 22 November 2021, through 15 March 2022 regarding COVID-19 illness and vaccinations, th

BACKGROUND: In addition to established risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (aCVDs), infections and autoimmune diseases, such as Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), have been reported as risk-enhancer factors. In this retrospective single-center, case-control study, the relative weight of RA and H. pylori infection on aCVD was evaluated in a cohort of patients from Northern Sardinia, Italy, where both conditions are frequent.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were retrieved from records of subjects undergoing upper endoscopy and screened for H. pylori

Conflicting results on the cardiovascular involvement after SARS-CoV-2 infection generated concerns on the safety of return-to-play (RTP) in athletes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of cardiac involvement after COVID-19 in Olympic athletes, who had previously been screened in our pre-participation program. Since November 2020, all consecutive Olympic athletes presented to our Institute after COVID-19 prior to RTP were enrolled. The protocol was dictated by the Italian governing bodies and comprised: 12-lead ECG, blood test, cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET), 24-h ECG m

IMPORTANCE: The time interval between COVID-19 infection and surgery is a potentially modifiable but understudied risk factor for postoperative complications.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between time to surgery after COVID-19 diagnosis and the risk of a composite of major postoperative cardiovascular morbidity events within 30 days of surgery.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This single-center, retrospective cohort study was conducted among 3997 adult patients (aged ≥18 years) with a previous diagnosis of COVID-19, as documented by a positive polymerase chain reaction test resul

BACKGROUND: Dengue virus (DENV) infection may be associated with increased risks of major adverse cardiovascular effect (MACE), but a large-scale study evaluating the association between DENV infection and MACEs is still lacking.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: All laboratory confirmed dengue cases in Taiwan during 2009 and 2015 were included by CDC notifiable database. The self-controlled case-series design was used to evaluate the association between DENV infection and MACE (including acute myocardial infarction [AMI], heart failure and stroke). The "risk interval" was defined as the first 7 days aft

36.9 million people worldwide are living with HIV-1. The disease remains incurable and HIV-infected patients have increased risk of atherosclerosis. Inflammation is a key driver of atherosclerosis, but no targeted molecular therapies have been developed to reduce cardiovascular risk in people with HIV-1 (PWH). While the mechanism is unknown, there are several important inflammatory signaling events that are implicated in the development of chronic inflammation in PWH and in the inflammatory changes that lead to atherosclerosis. Here we describe the pro-inflammatory state of HIV-1 infection tha

Unacceptably high incidence of pediatric HIV despite worldwide increased access to antiretroviral therapy. The routine management of these children includes provision of antiretroviral therapy, and periodic assessment of its results and complications. However, no systematic assessment of the nutritional status, lipid profile or screening for cardiovascular disease is done. Our study aimed at describing the occurrence of cardiovascular abnormalities in HIV-infected children under antiretroviral therapy, and at determining the vital outcomes 5 years after. A prospective observational study was i

Helicobacter pylori infection occurs throughout the world between countries and races. A seroprevalence study of H. pylori infection in the occurrence of atherosclerosis (ASc) has been considered to be the main cause of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in part of Iran. From 600 volunteers, 97 serum samples were selected and tested for the presence of H. pylori infection. Positive and negative H. pylori infection samples were then selected for Chlamydia pneumonia and cytomegalovirus infection. Their serum levels for high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and IL-6 titer were measured using an

BACKGROUND: Stroke can be a devastating complication in patients with cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) infection. Paradoxical septic embolism can occur in the presence of device leads and patent foramen ovale (PFO) via embolic dislodgment during transvenous lead removal (TLR).
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine stroke and its associated factors in patients undergoing TLR for CIED infection.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of all patients undergoing TLR for CIED infection from January 1, 2000, to July 30, 2017, from all 3 tertiary referral ce

BACKGROUND.: Most cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) recipients are elderly, have multiple comorbid conditions, and are at increased risk of CIED infection (CIEDI). Current guidelines recommend complete device removal in patients with CIEDI to prevent relapse and mortality. However, comorbidities or other factors may preclude device removal, thus prompting a nonsurgical approach that includes chronic antibiotic suppression (CAS). There are limited data on outcomes of patients receiving CAS for CIEDI.
METHODS.: We retrospectively screened 660 CIEDI cases from 2005 to 2015 usin

A 47-year-old man with HIV infection presented 10 years after initial secondary syphilis diagnosis and treatment for routine follow-up. His HIV was well controlled on antiretroviral therapy. Rapid plasma reagin was 1:1, and TP-PA was reactive. Physical examination revealed a wide pulse pressure, a systolic murmur, and an early diastolic decrescendo murmur. Echocardiogram revealed moderate to severe aortic regurgitation, and subsequent computed tomography angiogram showed a 6.8-cm fusiform aneurysm of the proximal ascending aorta. Aortic valve and ascending hemiarch replacement were performed.

The importance of the metabolic disorders and their impact on patients with HIV infection requires an individualized study and continuous updating. HIV patients have the same cardiovascular risk factors as the general population. The HIV infection per se increases the cardiovascular risk, and metabolic disorders caused by some antiretroviral drugs are added risk factors. For this reason, the choice of drugs with a good metabolic profile is essential. The most common metabolic disorders of HIV infected-patients (insulin resistance, diabetes, hyperlipidemia or osteopenia), as well as other facto

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of HIV is the highest in sub-Saharan Africa; South Africa (SA) is one of the most affected countries with the highest number of adults living with HIV infection in the world. Besides the traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the general population, in people living with HIV there are specific factors - chronic inflammation, metabolic changes associated with the infection, therapy, and lipodystrophy - that potentially increase the risk for developing CVD.
OBJECTIVE: This study proposes a screening discriminant model to identify the most importa

Patients with HIV‑1 infection often develop multiple complications and comorbidities, including osteoporosis and atherosclerosis. The receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B/receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand/osteoprotegerin axis has been identified as a possible common link between osteoporosis and vascular diseases. Since the discovery of this axis, much has been learned about its role in controlling skeletal biology and less about its role in the context of vascular biology. However, the exact role of the receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand/osteoprotege

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic bacterial colonisation of medical implants is increasingly recognised. The role of the often unusual bacteria is usually unknown however.
OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: During a three-year period, patients presenting with clinically evident CIED lead endocarditis and/or pocket infections were included in a prospective database. Using 16s DNA analysis and sequencing, devices and pockets of consecutive patients with evident CIED infection were examined for the presence of bacterial species in addition to the ones grown in conventional culture in order to characterise their clin

BACKGROUND: Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is an emerging biomarker of cardiovascular disease. This study was conducted to describe the distribution of Lp-PLA2 in a cohort of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected adults and to determine associations between Lp-PLA2, cardiometabolic risk factors, and subclinical atherosclerosis in this population.
METHODS: Lp-PLA2 was assessed in 341 (25% women, 52% white, 74% on highly active antiretroviral therapy [HAART]) participants of a cohort with detailed characterization of atherogenic risk factors, including surrogate markers

BACKGROUND: Among HIV-infected patients, hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection is associated with lower cholesterol levels, but it remains unclear how it affects cardiovascular outcomes.
METHODS: We performed logistic regression to evaluate acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and cerebrovascular disease (CVD) events by HCV status among HIV-infected US veterans in the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) era (1996-2004). We then performed survival analyses to evaluate incident AMI and CVD, exploring antiretroviral therapy (ART) as a time-dependent variable.
RESULTS: A total of 19 424 HIV-

A cross-sectional study was performed to evaluate classical risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and subclinical atherosclerosis by carotid ultrasonography in HIV-positive subjects, naïve or treated with antiretroviral agents. A total of 66 patients were enrolled into the study: 21 subjects were naïve to all antiretroviral agents (group A) and 45 patients were treated with antiretroviral therapy for >or=36 months (group B). The prevalence of carotid plaques was significantly higher in group B than in group A (44.7% versus 0%; P = 0.014). In group B, patients with high 10-year risk of coron

INTRODUCTION: Some cases of HIV+ patients with unexplained vascular disease have been reported and many studies are being performed to determine whether HIV infected individuals have an increased cardio-vascular risk (CVR). We propose: to describe lipid profile of untreated HIV+ patients and to compare it with the HIV- and to assess whether any of the lipid abnormalities influence in CVR estimation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 407 homosexual males: 251 untreated HIV+ and 156 HIV-. Biochemistry parameters: Total cholesterol (CHOL), HDL-cholesterol (HDL), VLDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol (LDL), trig
