Maternal cultural participation and child health status in a Middle Eastern context: evidence from an urban health study.

BACKGROUND: The negative effect of poverty on child health has been well established. However, rapid urbanization in developing countries prompts new research questions relating to socio-cultural practices and other related variables in these settings. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between maternal cultural participation and child health status in impoverished neighbourhoods of Beirut, Lebanon. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 1241 mothers with children aged less than 5 years was conducted from randomly selected households in three impoverished neighbourhoods of diverse ethnic an

Understanding Who Benefits Most from Family-Based Prevention: Differential Intervention Effects for Families with Low Income.

Multicomponent family-based interventions can mitigate the adverse effects of poverty on family functioning. However, benefits are not uniform across families. Limited research has examined how distinct constellations of poverty-related risk shape engagement with and responsiveness to preventive interventions. Using a person-centered approach, this study tested whether pre-intervention risk classes predicted differential engagement with and response to the Fatherhood, Relationship, and Marriage Education (FRAME) intervention, a program based on the Family Stress Model and designed to strengthe

Poorer health and nutritional outcomes in orphans and vulnerable young children not explained by greater exposure to extreme poverty in Zimbabwe.

OBJECTIVE: To describe patterns of association between different groups of young orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and their nutritional and health outcomes; and to develop a theoretical framework to analyse the determinants of child malnutrition and ill-health, and identify the different mechanisms which contribute to these outcomes in such children. METHODS: We developed and tested a theoretical framework to explain why orphans and vulnerable children experience more ill-health and malnutrition based on statistical analysis of data on 31 672 children aged 0-17 years (6753 aged under 5 y

Conceptualising the empowerment of caregivers raising children with developmental disabilities in Ethiopia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of children with developmental disabilities (DDs) in Ethiopia experience stigma and exclusion. Due to limited existing services and substantial barriers to accessing care, they often lack support. Caregiver empowerment could help address injustices that hinder their capacity to support their child as they would like. The aim of this study was to explore the meaning and potential role of empowerment for caregivers raising a child with a DD and how empowerment was situated in relation to other priorities in service development. METHODS: This was a qualitative phenomenolog

Health risky behaviors among rural-to-urban migrant workers in China: prevalence, patterns, and association with distal and proximal factors.

BACKGROUND: Health Risky Behaviors (HRBs) pose a significant public health challenge, particularly among migrant workers in China who face unfavorable living and working conditions. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of HRBs in rural-to-urban migrant workers, as well as explore factors associated with HRBs from both distal and proximal perspectives. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey involving 2,065 rural-to-urban migrant workers was conducted. Participants completed a structured questionnaire assessing HRBs, distal factors (school dropout, peer victimization, p

Trends in coverage following an equity-oriented strategy for introducing new vaccines, Peru, 2004-2022.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcome of Peru's strategy to introduce new vaccines in the poorest regions with high child mortality rates. METHODS: We analysed data from nationally representative annual health surveys conducted between 2004 and 2022. We examined associations between vaccine coverage and poverty (proportion of households in the poorest 40% of the national wealth index) at the ecological level using the country's 25 regions and at the individual child level using household wealth quintiles. We obtained vaccination data from home-based records. FINDINGS: The surveys included 49 02

Vaccination coverage among young homeless children compared to US national immunization survey data.

INTRODUCTION: Comprehensive vaccination coverage among homeless children in the United States (US) is largely unknown although a few studies suggest low coverage with single vaccinations. This study compared vaccination coverage with a combined 7-vaccines series among homeless children in the District of Columbia (DC) to coverage among other US children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of homeless children in DC was conducted from 2018 to 2019. Recruitment occurred at housing shelters, social services centers, and a diaper dispensary, and through limited chain referral. Englis

Individual and Interactive Effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Household Income on Adolescent Depression and Anxiety Symptoms.

Cumulative Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and low household income are associated with adolescent depression and anxiety, but it is unclear whether distinct ACE subdomains - maltreatment (e.g., abuse) versus parent challenges (e.g., parental mental illness) - when experienced in distinct developmental periods exert a unique influence on adolescent mental health, or how ACEs and economic disadvantage operate together to influence outcomes. Thus, we aimed to (1) examine associations between baseline household income, early childhood ACEs (ages 0-5; sub-indexed as Maltreatment vs. Parent Ch

Perceived Impacts of the Expanded Child Tax Credit Cessation Based on Family Income Level.

The 2021 Expanded Child Tax Credit (ECTC) lifted millions of children out of poverty and drastically improved well-being. These impacts were particularly salient for families with lower income among those who received the full ECTC benefit. This study gathered lived experiences on the ECTC cessation and explored differential impacts across income levels to inform discussions around policy restoration. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents who had a child (2-12 years) who received the full ECTC. Interviews occurred in May 2022 after the ECTC ended. Changes in financial security

Inequalities in complete childhood immunisation in Nepal: results from a population-based cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of different aspects of inequality on childhood immunisation rates in Nepal. The study hypothesised that social inequality factors (eg, gender of a child, age of mother, caste/ethnic affiliation, mother's socioeconomic status, place of residence and other structural barrier factors such as living in extreme poverty and distance to health facility) affect the likelihood of children being immunised. DESIGN: Using gender of a child, age of mother, caste/ethnic affiliation, mother's socioeconomic status, place of residence and other structural barrier factors

[Child maltreatment: social representation of the general population and the professionals working with children in the Caribbean area of Colombia].

OBJECTIVE: The main objective was to know social representations about child maltreatment (severity, etiology, and intervention strategies) … observed in other regions and countries. It is important to take into account that child labor and child poverty were considered as non-severe typologies of child maltreatment. Moreover, findings suggest that people from general population in the Caribbean area of Colombia have a relevant knowledge about agencies working for child protection.

Interlinkages between Climate Change and Food Systems: The Impact on Child Malnutrition-Narrative Review.

The pandemics of obesity, undernutrition, and climate change represent severe threats to child health. They co-occur; interact with each other to produce sequelae at biological, psychological, or social levels; and share common underlying drivers. In this paper, we review the key issues concerning child diet and nutritional status, focusing on the interactions with climate and food systems. Inadequate infant and young child feeding practices, food insecurity, poverty, and limited access to health services are the leading causes of malnutrition across generations. Food system industrialization

Risk Factors and Services to Reduce Child Sexual Abuse Recurrence.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is associated with a range of negative consequences for victims that are compounded when it recurs. We used the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System to study a cohort of 42,036 children in 45 U.S. states with sexual abuse reports first confirmed by child protective services (CPS) during 2010 in order to identify children with increased risk for recurrence. A small proportion (3.6%) had a second confirmed sexual abuse report through 2015. In multivariate models, female gender, family hearing and vision problems, other child maltreatment, and other family violenc

Unconditional cash transfers and maternal substance use: findings from a randomized control trial of low-income mothers with infants in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: Policy debates over anti-poverty programs are often marked by pernicious stereotypes suggesting that direct cash transfers to people residing in poverty encourage health-risking behaviors such as smoking, drinking, and other substance use. Causal evidence on this issue is limited in the U.S. Given the prominent role of child allowances and other forms of cash assistance in the 2021 American Rescue Plan and proposed Build Back Better legislation, evidence on the extent to which a monthly unconditional cash gift changes substance use patterns among low-income mothers with infants war

Soil-transmitted helminth infections: ascariasis, trichuriasis, and hookworm.

The three main soil-transmitted helminth infections, ascariasis, trichuriasis, and hookworm, are common clinical disorders in man. The gastrointestinal tract of a child living in poverty in a less developed country is likely to be parasitised with at least one, and in many cases all three soil-transmitted helminths, with resultant impairments in physical, intellectual, and cognitive development. The benzimidazole anthelmintics, mebendazole and albendazole, are commonly used to remove these infections. The use of these drugs is not limited to treatment of symptomatic soil-transmitted helminth i

Comparison of U.S. Army and civilian substantiated reports of child maltreatment.

Little is known about the similarities and differences between civilian and military child maltreatment cases and no recent study has compared them directly. Understanding the nature of the problems in each could lead to identifying strengths and weaknesses for the development of more helpful prevention and treatment programs. The overall rates of child maltreatment in the U.S. civilian population (14.7 to 11.8 per 1,000) were about double the Army rates (7.6 to 6.0 per 1,000) from 1995 to 1999. These differences were largely because of the higher rate of neglect in the U.S. data--about three

Double victims: poor women and AIDS.

Women constitute the fastest growing group of people with AIDS; a disproportionate number of poor minority women are affected. Education and prevention campaigns have not been directed at this population. Though intravenous drug users have been identified as "at risk," many American women have been identified as HIV positive only after giving birth to a child who develops AIDS. Combating AIDS in women offers a formidable challenge to social service and public health officials because it mandates consideration of intravenous drug abuse, high rates of unwanted and teenage pregnancies, poverty, d

Mechanisms in the cycle of violence.

Two questions concerning the effect of physical abuse in early childhood on the child's development of aggressive behavior are the focus of this article. The first is whether abuse per se has deleterious effects. In earlier studies, in which samples were nonrepresentative and family ecological factors (such as poverty, marital violence, and family instability) and child biological variables (such as early health problems and temperament) were ignored, findings have been ambiguous. Results from a prospective study of a representative sample of 309 children indicated that physical abuse is indee
