SURGICAL ORCHIECTOMY IN FRUIT BATS-DESCRIPTION OF TWO TECHNIQUES IN THE RUWENZORI LONG-HAIRED FRUIT BAT (ROUSETTUS LANOSUS) AND THE JAMAICAN FRUIT-EATING BAT (ARTIBEUS JAMAICENSIS).

Contraception is needed to prevent overpopulation and inbreeding in highly fecund captive bat colonies. Reports on surgical contraception in bats are limited. The objective of this study was to describe surgical castration techniques in a megachiropteran and a microchiropteran fruit bat species. Open orchiectomy by transfixing ligation of the spermatic cord was performed in 14 Ruwenzori long-haired fruit bats (Rousettus lanosus) (RL-LIG), and orchiectomy with radiosurgery alone was performed in 125 Jamaican fruit-eating bats (Artibeus jamaicensis) (AJ-RS) and one Ruwenzori bat (RL-RS). The sur…

Pathogenic New World Relapsing Fever Borrelia in a Myotis Bat, Eastern China, 2015.

We identified Candidatus Borrelia fainii, a human pathogenic bacterium causing New World relapsing fever in a Myotis bat in eastern China. This finding expands knowledge about the geographic distribution of Borrelia spp. and the potential for infection with New World relapsing fever in China.

Membranous Support for Eyes of Strepsirrhine Primates and Fruit Bats.

Living primates have relatively large eyes and support orbital tissues with a postorbital bar (POB) and/or septum. Some mammals with large eyes lack a POB, and presumably rely on soft tissues. Here, we examined the orbits of four species of strepsirrhine primates (Galagidae, Cheirogaleidae) and three species of fruit bats (Pteropodidae). Microdissection and light microscopy were employed to identify support structures of the orbit. In bats and primates, there are two layers of fascial sheets that border the eye laterally. The outer membrane is the most superficial layer of deep fascia, and has

Bat-associated leptospirosis.

Leptospirosis is a globally prevalent disease that affects humans, causing systemic illness that may lead to multi-organ involvement. Clinical signs include sudden fever, general malaise, muscular pain, conjunctival suffusion, and jaundice. Disease is caused by pathogenic bacteria including over 200 serologic variants. Most serologic variants have primary reservoirs in wild mammals, which continually infect and colonize domesticated animals. The organism has been recovered from rats, swine, dogs, cattle, and other animals, notably bats. Most studies have focused on domestic animals as reservoi

[Bad bats?].

For many centuries, man is fascinated by bats, the only flying mammals. Probably because of their particular immune system, bats can be considered an important reservoir for new emerging viral diseases like SARS-Coronavirus, Marburg fever, Ebola fever and Nipah virus encephalitis. During closer contact, they can transmit rabies and probably other nonviral infectious diseases. Bats get closer to man due to ecological modifications like deforestation, so that transmission of new infectious agents might provoke dramatic epidemics.

Ultrastructure of the principal and accessory submandibular glands of the common vampire bat.

The principal and accessory submandibular glands of the common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, were examined by electron microscopy. The secretory endpieces of the principal gland consist of serous tubules capped at their blind ends by mucous acini. The substructure of the mucous droplets and of the serous granules varies according to the mode of specimen preparation. With ferrocyanide-reduced osmium postfixation, the mucous droplets are moderately dense and homogeneous; the serous granules often have a polygonal outline and their matrix shows clefts in which bundles of wavy filaments may be p

[Histoplasma capsulatum: isolation from bats in Cuba].

A mycologic-serologic study of 169 bats of species Artibeus jamaicensis parvipos, Brachyphyllanana, Eptesicus fuscus dutertreus, Tadarida brasiliensis muscula and Mormoops blainvillei which were catched in a cave of Havana province is presented. Histoplasma capsulatum were isolated from the lungs, liver and spleen, in four out of the five species studied. All species were serologically negative.

Monitoring of Bartonella spp. in Iberian bats from Spain.

Chiroptera play a key role in the environment by providing pivotal ecosystem services. However, bats can be hosts of several zoonotic pathogens, including bacteria belonging to the Bartonella genus. This molecular study aimed to fill the notable lack of information concerning Bartonella spp. in bats from the Iberian Peninsula. We investigated the occurrence, risk factors and molecular characterization of this pathogen in 240 live bats sampled in northern, central, and southern areas of Spain during 2020-2021. Blood DNA samples from 22 bat species of Miniopteridae, Vespertilionidae and Rhinolop…

Diversity of Ehrlichia spp., Anaplasma spp. and Neorickettsia spp. in vampire bats.

Although bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) act as natural reservoirs for many zoonotic pathogens around the world, few studies have investigated the occurrence of Anaplasmataceae agents in bats, especially vampire bats. The family Anaplasmataceae (order Rickettsiales) encompasses obligate intracellular bacteria of the genera Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Neorickettsia, Neoehrlichia, Wolbachia, and Allocryptoplasma. The present study aimed to investigate, using molecular techniques, the presence of species of Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and Neorickettsia in vampire bats sampled in northern Brazil. Between 2017 and…

Greater Mouse-Tailed Bats Glide During Approximately 50% of Their Flight.

Flapping flight is widely regarded as a mechanically complex and energetically demanding mode of locomotion. In bats, the evolution of flapping flight is hypothesized to have arisen from gliding, an unpowered form of aerial movement. Although intermittent flap-gliding flight is considered advantageous in many bird species, this flight strategy has rarely been studied in bats. In this study, we used on-board tracking devices and audio recordings to characterize the flight behavior and corresponding echolocation of greater mouse-tailed bats (Rhinopoma microphyllum) in the wild. Our results revea

Gaze stabilization: Bats do move their eyes but differently from mice.

While bats are well-studied for their echolocating sense, it has been unclear whether they make eye movements. A recent study shows that bats do move their eyes, but their gaze-stabilizing responses are weaker than in mice despite a comparable vestibular system.
