Leprosy and Christian conversion in twentieth-century Inhambane, Mozambique.

Based on observations and interviews carried out in Maputo and Inhambane and on an analysis of primary sources from the Historical Archive of Mozambique, we show how the Africans in contact with the Methodist Episcopal Church were not passive victims of Protestant proselytism in that they showed agency by adapting creatively to exploit its presence in a context of leprosy. The research shows how new identities have been created in the researcher-researched relationship, but also how issues related to cultural shock and gender relations have permeated research in the field.

Impact of Spirituality in Christians With Serious Illness - A Phenomenological Study.

Seeking support within the faith community is frequently noted in Christians with serious illness. To assure needs are identified and to better understand the implications of spirituality in people with serious illness, a phenomenological study following the Giorgi methodology was conducted with 20 Christian individuals living with serious illness while residing in Greenwood, South Carolina, a community in the heart of the Bible Belt of America. Research interviews captured four major structures with accompanying constituent parts. The structures and constituent parts include sovereignty of Go

[18F]FDG PET-CT in Weber-Christian Disease.

A 46-year-old woman with relapsing fever and painful pelvic subcutaneous nodules was referred to our center for a second opinion. Despite antibiotic and corticoid treatment, inflammation markers remained high. FDG-PET/CT was performed to evaluate the possible cause of her clinical condition, exclude systemic disease and evaluate the extension and inflammation of the nodules. FDG-PET/CT showed multiple abdominopelvic subcutaneous soft tissue foci without visceral involvement. The review of a previous nodule biopsy revealed Weber-Christian Disease (WCD), a rare disorder characterized by idiopath

[Weber-Christian disease: unknown etiology systemic panniculitis].

Panniculitis is an inflammation occurring within adipose tissue. This process is often associated with auto-immune diseases, infections, malignancy and others diseases of unknown cause. We report a 16-year-old woman with constitutional symptoms and relapsing nonsuppurative nodular panniculitis. The etiological study didn't identify any associated disease, on admission or in 2,5 years of follow-up. This is a case of Weber-Christian disease with a favourable corticosteroid therapy result. The authors present a Weber-Christian disease bibliographic revision.

Redemptive experience in relational family therapy: a Christian perspective.

We all long for relationships with others, because only in connecting with others can we develop our intrapsychic structure and become functional adults. We are psychologically predisposed to have a constant connection with others and are driven toward relationships with others. Our deepest yearnings are therefore devoted to building solid dialogue as the means of becoming fully human. We, therefore, consciously or unconsciously, long for a relationship where we can experience happiness, satisfaction and, above all, redemption or salvation from our dreads, miseries and unhappiness. In this art

[The black death in Christian and Muslim Occident, 1347-1353].

Between the years 1346 and 1353, a terrible epidemic swept over Western Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, causing catastrophic losses of population everywhere, both in the rural areas and in towns and cities. The Black Death was a disease of such magnitude that it not only shook the Old World to its economic and social foundations but changed the course of human history. The authors considered and analyzed many studies on the Black Death published in different languages. In the present paper they report medical and epidemiological specificities of the pandemic as well as its geographi

A medical birth registry at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a medical birth registry intended to serve clinical, administrative and research purposes. METHODS: Starting in July 2000, every birth at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Moshi, Tanzania has been recorded in a separate database. The information is obtained through personal interviews with each mother, conducted by specially trained midwives, and supplied with data from the medical records. A secretary enters the data into the electronic file. Data are collected about the mother and father: education, occupation and living conditions, mother's health befor

A case of Weber-Christian disease associated with myelodysplastic syndrome.

We report the case of a 73-year-old man with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) who developed Weber-Christian disease (WCD). Bone marrow aspirates showed refractory anemia with abnormal karyotypes such as trisomy 8, trisomy 8 and 14, and trisomy 8, 9, and 14. The patient had intermittent fever associated with multiple tender erythematous nodules on the skin. A biopsy sample taken from a nodule revealed focal subcutaneous infiltration of neutrophils and necrotizing fat tissue. We diagnosed the patient as having lobular panniculitis associated with myelodysplastic syndrome. The serum levels of solub

Weber-Christian disease presenting with proptosis: a case report.

Weber-Christian disease (WCD) is a rare inflammatory disease of adipose tissue, which is characterized by painful cutaneous nodules and constitutional symptoms. Although any area of the body containing fat can be affected by WCD, the involvement of retrobulbar fat is uncommon and proptosis is a rare presenting manifestation. We report a case who presented with proptosis of the right eye which is accompanied by painful subcutaneous nodules, high fever and myalgia. Biopsies of retrobulbar tissue and suprapubic nodule showed lobular panniculitis with mixed cellular infiltration, mainly composed o

Weber-Christian panniculitis: a review of 30 cases with this diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: More than 60 years ago, Christian described a panniculitis that was later termed Weber-Christian disease. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether this is a specific disease or a nonspecific disease that embraces several specific conditions. METHODS: We studied 30 cases diagnosed as Weber-Christian panniculitis and found it possible to make a more specific diagnosis. RESULTS: In 12 patients, findings were compatible with erythema nodosum. Six patients had phlebitis or postphlebitic syndrome. Factitial panniculitis was diagnosed in five patients, and trauma

Spirituality in nursing theory and practice: dilemmas for Christian bioethics.

Moral strangerhood is due in part to competing worldviews. The profession of nursing is experiencing a paradigm shift which creates ethical dilemmas for both Christian nurses and Christian patients. Nursing's new focus on spirituality and spiritual care presents itself as broadly defining a desired state or patient outcome -- spiritual integrity -- supposed to be applicable to all patients of all faiths. Analysis of nursing's definition of spirituality reveals assumptions and values consistent with an Eastern/New Age worldview which may cause hostility towards Christian patients stereotyped as

Trends in neonatal exchange transfusions at Yodogawa Christian Hospital.

A review was conducted to determine the trends in exchange transfusion (ET) of newborn infants at the Yodogawa Christian Hospital during the past 18 years. At that hospital in 1957, the first ET was performed on a term infant with severe hemolytic jaundice caused by rhesus factor (Rh) incompatibility. By 1989, ET had been performed in more than 1400 newborn infants. These cases of newborns who had had ET were retrospectively reviewed, with a focus on every 3 year period from 1974 to 1992. The total number of infants requiring ET noticeably decreased from 68 cases (14.0% of total admissions) in

Glucocorticoid-unresponsive fever in a patient with Weber-Christian disease.

Weber-Christian disease, a disease of unknown aetiology, is characterised by relapsing febrile episodes and systemic panniculitis. Glucocorticoid therapy is often useful during acute phases of the disease. This report describes a patient in whom hyperpyrexia did not respond to high-dose glucocorticoid treatment, yet did respond to a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
