Capillary gas chromatography of cotton dusts associated with human pulmonary function studies.

The effects of geographical area of growth and cotton variety on pulmonary activity have been evaluated through human volunteer exposure studies conducted by NIOSH and USDA at the Cotton Quality Research Station, Clemson, S.C. These studies demonstrate that carding California cottons releases dust with less human pulmonary activity than dust released from the corresponding Mississippi cottons. Dust released from Texas cottons grown in 1982 was considerably less active than the dust from Texas cottons grown in 1983. Distinct differences in the chemical compositions of the Mississippi, Texas, an

Determination of terbutaline in plasma by gas chromatography chemical ionization mass spectrometry.

A method is described for the determination of unconjugated terbutaline in plasma. The assay is based on gas chromatography chemical ionization mass spectrometry with ammonia as the reagent gas. Terbutaline and a deuterium labelled internal standard were isolated from plasma by ion exchange chromatography followed by extraction into t-butanol. Quantitation was performed by selected ion monitoring of the [MH]+ions m/z 442 and m/z 448 of the tri-O-TMS derivatives of terbutaline and the internal standard, respectively. Silylation was carried out in the presence of pyridine at room temperature and

Direct analysis of salicylic acid in keratolytic plaster by gas-solid chromatography.

A rapid gas-solid chromatographic method is reported for the direct analysis of salicylic acid in keratolytic plaster. The method requires no preseparation or derivatization and takes about 14 min. Since it requires only 2-7 mg of sample, it can determine the salicylic acid concentration in a particular area of plaster. The analyzing column is packed with porous polymer beads of 2,6-diphenyl-1,4-phenylene oxide. An automatic solid sampling system is used to connection with the gas chromatograph employing dual flame-ionization detectors. The average recovery of salicylic acid in synthetic sampl

Presumptive diagnosis of anaerobic bacteremia by gas-liquid chromatography of blood cultures.

By quantitative gas-liquid chromatography of glucose-containing blood cultures at the moment of first signs of growth, a presumptive diagnosis of anaerobic bacteremia could be made in 24 out of 26 cultures yielding obligate anaerobes upon subsequent culture. With Bacteroides sp. (20 strains isolated), elevated levels of isovaleric acid (greater than or equal to 0.1 mumol/ml) and/or succinic acid (greater than or equal to 5 mumol/ml) were detected in the medium used. An exception to this were two strains of Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron that did not produce sufficient quantities of these acids.

Improved theophylline serum analysis by an appropriate internal standard for gas chromatography.

A gas chromatographic method is presented for the measurement of theophylline in serum. To serum samples containing the drug the internal standard, 3-isobutyl-l-methylxanthine, was added and the serum was saturated with ammonium carbonate. A mixture of isopropanol-chloroform (5:95) was used for extraction. The organic phase was filtered and evaporated. The residue, dissolved in chloroform, was extracted with sodium hydroxide. The basic solution was acidified, washed with hexane and reextracted with isopropanol-chloroform. The organic phase was dried with anhydrous sodium sulphate before evapor

Analytical toxicology: Applications of element-selective electrolytic conductivity detection for gas chromatography.

We applied a commercially available microelectrolytic conductivity detector to toxicological problems of qualitative and quantitative analysis by gas chromatography. The detector can be used for the sensitive and selective detection of halogen-, nitrogen-, and sulfur-containing compounds. Relative response in different element-selective detector variables such as reaction gas, reaction catalyst, and furnace temperature can be used to further improve qualitative identification by gas chromatography.

Evaluation of high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography for quantitation of dextromethorphan hydrobromide in cough-cold syrup preparations.

A rapid and sensitive high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) procedure is described for the analysis of the antitussive dextromethorphan hydrobromide in several cough-cold syrup preparations and compared with a gas chromatographic (GC) procedure. In the HPLC procedure, the active ingredient is analyzed as the hydrobromide salt by dilution in the mobile phase and separation on a reverse-phase cyano column. In the GC method, the active ingredient is analyzed as the free base, in which an aqueous solution of the antitussive is made alkaline and extracted with dichloromethane before inject

Comparative study of comprehensive gas chromatography-nitrogen chemiluminescence detection and gas chromatography-ion trap-tandem mass spectrometry for determining nicotine and carcinogen organic nitrogen compounds in thirdhand tobacco smoke.

Thirdhand tobacco smoke (THS) constitutes a poorly understood pathway of exposure of non-smokers, especially toddlers, to tobacco-related carcinogens. However, to date most of the carcinogens present in tobacco smoke have not been detected in THS and, therefore, the significance of THS health risk is still unknown. In this study, we have compared the performance of two analytical methods - one based on gas chromatography coupled to ion trap mass spectrometry detection (GC-IT-MS) and the other on comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to a nitrogen chemiluminescence detector (

Unraveling the thermal release dynamics and pyrolysis signatures of agarwood by gas-liquid microextraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

BACKGROUND: Agarwood, a precious resinous material derived from Aquilaria trees, is highly valued for its unique fragrance that mainly originates from sesquiterpenes and 2-(2-phenylethyl)chromones. However, the dynamic release behavior of these compounds during combustion remains poorly understood. Common analytical methods, such as headspace and solid-phase microextraction, are limited by their temperature range and fail to mimic true combustion conditions. An innovative pre-treatment technique, gas liquid microextraction (GLME), was employed, requiring as little as 10 mg of sample to effecti

Absolute quantification of peptides by isotope dilution liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.

Absolute quantitation of peptides/proteins in dilute calibration solutions used in various diagnostic settings is a major challenge. Here we report the absolute quantitation of peptides by non-species-specific isotope dilution liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ID LC-ICPMS) based on stoichiometric Eu tagging. The method was validated by species-specific isotope dilution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis of constituent amino acids of the target peptide. Quantitative labeling of bradykinin peptide was accomplished with a commercially available

Relationship between the matrix effect and the physicochemical properties of analytes in gas chromatography.

The phenomenon "matrix-induced chromatographic response enhancement" (matrix effect) causes quantitative errors in gas chromatography (GC) analyses. This effect varies according to the analyte nature, matrix type and concentration, and GC-system parameters. By focusing on the physicochemical properties of analytes, a predictive model was developed for the matrix effect using quantitative structure-property relationships. Experimental values of the matrix effect were determined for 58 compounds in a serum extract obtained from solid-phase extraction as the matrix. Eight molecular descriptors we

Determination of dithiocarbamates and milneb residues in foods by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

A highly sensitive gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) method was developed for dithiocarbamates (DTCs) and milneb in foods. DTCs and milneb were extracted from foods with cysteine-EDTA solution as sodium salts, and methylated with methyl iodide. Methyl derivatives of DTCs and milneb were cleaned up on a neutral alumina mini column and determined by GC-MS. The mean recoveries of DTCs and milneb were in the range of 72-120%, except for methiram. The quantification limits were 0.01 mg/kg (as CS(2)) in foods except tea (0.1 mg/kg as CS(2)). The developed method was applied to 10 compou
