Rapid Response Subunit Vaccine Design in the Absence of Structural Information.

Prior to 2020, the threat of a novel viral pandemic was omnipresent but largely ignored. Just 12 months prior to the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic our team received funding from the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) to establish and validate a rapid response pipeline for subunit vaccine development based on our proprietary Molecular Clamp platform. Throughout the course of 2019 we conducted two mock tests of our system for rapid antigen production against two potential, emerging viral pathogens, Achimota paramyxovirus and Wenzhou mammarenavirus. For each vir

Developing measurement indices to enhance protection and resilience of critical infrastructure and key resources.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is developing indices to better assist in the risk management of critical infrastructures. The first of these indices is the Protective Measures Index - a quantitative index that measures overall protection across component categories: physical security, security management, security force, information sharing, protective measures and dependencies. The Protective Measures Index, which can also be recalculated as the Vulnerability Index, is a way to compare differing protective measures (eg fence versus security training). The second of these indices

The public and the smallpox threat.

BACKGROUND: The potential for a bioterrorist attack involving smallpox has led to a debate about what national precautions should be taken. What is unclear is the public's knowledge of smallpox and views about precautions. METHODS: We conducted a national survey of 1006 adults selected by means of random-digit dialing. Respondents were asked about their knowledge of and beliefs about the smallpox virus and the vaccine, their possible reactions to a bioterrorist attack involving smallpox, and a number of proposed state emergency powers. RESULTS: The majority of the respondents have a number o

Disaster preparedness perceptions and associated factors among final-year medical students in Hatay and Ordu, Türkiye.

INTRODUCTION: Following the February 2023 Türkiye earthquakes, disaster preparedness among healthcare professionals and medical students has become an important public health concern, particularly in disaster-prone settings where newly graduated physicians may be rapidly deployed to frontline healthcare services. However, evidence on disaster preparedness perceptions among medical students remains limited, especially in comparative settings involving regions with different levels of disaster exposure. This study aimed to assess disaster preparedness perception and associated factors among fina

Bioterrorism: pathogens as weapons.

Biowarfare has been used for centuries. The use of biological weapons in terrorism remains a threat. Biological weapons include infectious agents (pathogens) and toxins. The most devastating bioterrorism scenario would be the airborne dispersal of pathogens over a concentrated population area. Characteristics that make a specific pathogen a high-risk for bioterrorism include a low infective dose, ability to be aerosolized, high contagiousness, and survival in a variety of environmental conditions. The most dangerous potential bioterrorism agents include the microorganisms that produce anthrax,

Post-Discharge Cardiac Care in the Era of Coronavirus 2019: How Should We Prepare?

The novel coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) pandemic has placed intense pressure on health care organizations around the world. Among other concerns, there has been an increasing recognition of common and deleterious cardiovascular effects of COVID-19 based on preliminary studies. Furthermore, patients with preexisting cardiac disease are likely to experience a more severe disease course with COVID-19. As case numbers continue to increase exponentially, a surge in the number of patients with new or comorbid cardiovascular disease will translate into more frequent and, in some cases, prolonge

Identify, isolate, inform: Background and considerations for Ebola virus disease preparedness in U.S. ambulatory care settings.

Public health activities to identify and monitor persons at risk for Ebola virus disease in the United States include directing persons at risk to assessment facilities that are prepared to safely evaluate for Ebola virus disease. Although it is unlikely that a person with Ebola virus disease will unexpectedly present to a nonemergency ambulatory care facility, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have provided guidance for this setting that can be summarized as identify, isolate, and inform.

Terrorist attacks: do we know how to assess the results?

On September 11, 2001, terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York City. Explosions and fires resulted in the complete collapse of the two WTC towers. The collapsing towers served as enormous point sources of gaseous and particulate air pollution, seen as huge plumes of smoke and dust. The smoke contained volatile organic compounds and fine particles and aerosols. The dust fraction contained parts of ceiling tiles, carpets, concrete, adhesives, asbestos, chromium, lead, titanium, and many other elements and materials. Whether there were unusually toxic ingredients in the plum

Psychological Profile of Aviators and Flight Aspirants with High-Risk and Self-Harm Behavior.

BACKGROUND: In a high-stakes context like aviation, deliberate self-harm (DSH) warrants attention, as it may signal underlying psychological vulnerabilities. Understanding the psychological risk profiles of civil aviators and aspirants with DSH is therefore crucial for ensuring aviation safety. A dearth of research in this area has prompted the need for profiling psychological risk factors for DSH and high-risk behavior in civil aviation to ensure fitness to fly. The current paper is a review of six cases assigned for DSH referred to the qualified examiner. CASE SERIES: A retrospective case s

Strengthening Workplace Health Promotion Through Emergency Preparedness: A Normative Mediation Analysis.

Workplace emergency preparedness is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of occupational health promotion and prevention. Understanding the mechanisms through which institutional arrangements are associated with employees' willingness to provide emergency assistance is essential for advancing prevention science and strengthening organizational safety culture. Guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), this study tested a dual-mediation structural model using survey data from 147 frontline employees in a private-sector organization engaged in high-risk operational tasks. Perceived work

Using Social Media for Public Health Communication to Young People: A Qualitative Study to Inform Emergency Preparedness.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the role of social media for official health communication, especially for young people who rarely engage with other public health agency channels. This study explored the social media health communication experiences of health communicators and young people, during and outside the COVID-19 emergency. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with professional health communicators responsible for social media communication of Australian government health departments and young people aged 18-24 years (n = 21). Interviews were analyzed thematically using Framewo

Recent Innovations in Peer Programs for Socially Isolated Older Adults: Implications for Public Health Emergency Preparedness.

BACKGROUND: Peer programs, which pair individuals of similar age or life experience, can address complex psychosocial needs, loneliness, and social isolation among diverse older adults. However, these services were heavily disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study examined which pandemic-era innovations were sustained across six peer programs and identified core features of peer programs relevant to future public health emergency preparedness. METHODS: In this mixed-methods study, we first thematically analyzed 67 qualitative interviews (August, 2023-April, 2024) with diverse stakeholder

Medical management of victims contaminated with radionuclides after a "dirty bomb" attack.

A wide spectrum of scenarios may lead to radiation incidents and the liberation of radioactive material. In the case of a terrorist attack by a "dirty bomb", there is a risk of mechanical and thermal trauma, external irradiation, superficial contamination and incorporation of radioactive material. The first treatment priority must be given to the care of trauma patients with life-threatening injuries, as the health effects of radiation occur with latency. Radionuclide incorporation will lead to a longer-lasting irradiation from inside the body, associated with a higher risk of stochastic radia
