Antibiotics are often administered with antivenom following snakebite envenomings in order to avoid secondary bacterial infections. However, to this date, no studies have evaluated whether antibiotics may have undesirable potentiating effects on snake venom. Herein, we demonstrate that four commonly used antibiotics affect the enzymatic activities of proteolytic snake venom toxins in two different in vitro assays. Similar findings in vivo could have clinical implications for snakebite management and require further examination.

Septic bursitis is a well described entity in immunocompromised patients. Common factors contributing to an immunocompromised state are alcoholism and corticosteroid therapy. We describe 2 patients with Staphylococcus aureus olecranon bursitis with evidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and no other contributing factors to immunodeficiency. The clinical course in these patients was refractory to conservative management. Such a persistent course of septic bursitis, especially in the absence of other contributing factors, should raise the possibility of HIV infection.

A total of twenty-nine children were admitted to the paediatric unit with confirmed or presumed staphylococcal infection and subsequently treated with the narrow spectrum antibiotic--flucloxacillin. Despite the gravity of their condition all but two patients made a satisfactory recovery. There were no side-effects associated with this treatment.

Suprapubic abscess formation was seen in 2 babies after attempted suprapubic bladder puncture. In both cases the baby was grossly dehydrated and gut contents were aspirated. Though this complication is rare, it should be remembered, as with all investigations, that a definite indication should be present before suprapubic aspiration is undertaken.

We report a case of melioidosis presenting as peritonitis in a patient on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). A 47-year-old man, a lorry driver, with end-stage renal disease due to diabetes mellitus on CAPD presented in PD-related peritonitis. A strain of Chromobacterium violaceum isolated from a fatally infected patient was found to produce a beta-lactamase. When the organism was grown in drug-free medium, beta-lactamase activity was barely detectable, but when it was grown in the presence of penicillin G, a much larger amount of activity was produced. PURPOSE: To describe a patient who developed early signs of necrotizing fasciitis after undergoing laser blepharoplasty.
METHODS: A 36-year-old woman developed wound discharge, wound dehiscence, and facial swelling 66 hours postblepharoplasty.
