Recent findings support the efficacy of the direct acoustic cochlear implant (DACI) in patients with advanced otosclerosis whose rehabilitation is very challenging. Standard treatment consists of stapes surgery combined with hearing aids or a cochlear implant (CI). CI surgery, however, is often challenging depending on the grade of otosclerosis. This study aims to compare speech perception scores in quiet and noise of 6 DACI and 12 CI patients with advanced otosclerosis at 3 and 12 months after fitting. Preoperative computed tomographic scans of all patients were scored by experts using an exi

PURPOSE: This research note describes a planned project to design, implement, and evaluate remote care for adults using cochlear implants and compare their outcomes with those of individuals following the standard care pathway.
METHOD: Sixty people with cochlear implants will be recruited and randomized to either the remote care group or a control group. The remote care group will use new tools for 6 months: remote and self-monitoring, self-adjustment of device, and a personalized online support tool. The main outcome measure is patient empowerment, with secondary outcomes of stability in hea

A cochlear implant (CI) is a neural prosthetic device that restores hearing by directly stimulating the auditory nerve using an electrode array that is implanted in the cochlea. In CI surgery, the surgeon accesses the cochlea and makes an opening where he/she inserts the electrode array blind to internal structures of the cochlea. Because of this, the final position of the electrode array relative to intra-cochlear anatomy is generally unknown. We have recently developed an approach for determining electrode array position relative to intra-cochlear anatomy using a pre- and a post-implantation

BACKGROUND: Despite the fact that literacy acquisition in hearing impaired children is frequently hampered, reading and writing competences continue not to be regularly evaluated and documented in children fitted with cochlear implants (CI). In this 2-year longitudinal study literacy acquisition in children fitted with CI was investigated.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In total, 18 pre- and primary school children fitted with CI who had suffered prelingual deafness were examined. Subjects' ages at CI fitting ranged from 0.9 to 5.9 years; they were raised orally and monolingual German and showed norma

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the impact of cochlear anomalies on hearing outcomes for pediatric patients with cochlear implants.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review.
SETTING: Tertiary care center.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Charts were retrospectively reviewed for cases where pediatric cochlear implant surgery was performed between 2002 and 2018 at a single, tertiary care institution. Patients were divided into groups based on the presence or absence of radiological cochlear abnormalities, which were further classified as low or high risk anomalies. Hearing outcomes were evaluated by measuring pure

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear nerve deficiency (CND) is commonly implicated in moderate-to-profound pediatric sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Although cochlear implantation (CI) was previously contraindicated in CND patients, recent studies have demonstrated the potential for auditory response to CI in a subset of CND patients, though clinical outcomes remain variable. This study aims to evaluate pre- and postoperative speech and auditory outcomes of CI in pediatric patients with bilateral SNHL and radiographically confirmed CND.
DATA SOURCES: Embase and Ovid MEDLINE.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate the correlation between a narrow bony cochlear nerve canal (BCNC) and facial nerve stimulation (FNS) after cochlear implantation (CI) and their underlying mechanisms and to predict the risk of FNS preoperatively.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
METHODS: A total of 64 pediatric cases that underwent CI were included. Among them, 32 cases experienced FNS after CI, and another 32 cases were selected from 817 pediatric implantees by stratified random sampling. The width of the BCNC, the status of the cochlear nerve (CN) and the internal auditory canal …

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implantation for children with cochlear nerve deficiency remains controversial, as the presence of the cochlear nerve has been central to the success of cochlear implantation. This study sought to investigate whether there is any benefit from cochlear implantation for children with cochlear nerve deficiency.
METHODS: Nine children with cochlear nerve deficiency and bilateral prelingual profound sensorineural hearing loss were included in this study. Inner ear and internal auditory canal structures were evaluated using magnetic resonance imaging and temporal bone computed t…

Cochlear implantation is becoming more widespread. From its early days to date, huge strides have been made in the technology and surgical technique. However, one challenge remains: implanting malformed or abnormal cochleae. Even more challenging is a cochlea that appears normal at first glance, but is not. We present a case of a child with chondrodysplasia punctata, who had apparently morphologically normal inner ears, but with one major obstacle: the cochlea was smaller than normal in all dimensions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case described, and the solution is a novel …

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether radiologic and clinical data can predict the cochlear implant (CI) benefit in patients with otosclerosis, with a focus on the prognostic value of computed tomography (CT) features and relevant clinical variables.
METHODS: A retrospective single-centre analysis was conducted on 126 otosclerotic patients (143 implanted ears) who underwent CI between 2009 and May 2025. Preoperative and postoperative CT scans were reviewed and classified using established grading systems (Symons/Fanning, Rotteveel, Veillon). Clinical variables included age at impla

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implantation (CI) carries a risk of loss of vestibular function following surgery. Thus, vestibular assessment presurgery is used to identify vestibulopathy that may contraindicate implantation and guide in selecting the candidate ear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical implications of preoperative vestibular assessment, and to identify challenges in performing vestibular testing in patients with profound hearing loss, i.e., CI candidates.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with unilateral deafness and residual hearing on the contralateral ear can benefit from a cochlear implant (CI) on one side and a hearing aid (HA) on the other. However, hearing improvement among these patients is heterogenous. Interindividual differences in bimodal benefit may be caused by a mismatch of CI and HA. The aim of this study was to clinically apply a HA fitting strategy and to evaluate hearing outcome with and without a dedicated bimodal fitting formula.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective non-randomized study.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.

AIMS: To explore the strategy for CI in patients with CO after meningitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, the medical records of patients diagnosed with profound SNHL due to CO after meningitis and who underwent CI in our department between September 2010 and September 2021 were collected and reviewed.
