Studying the visual brain in its natural rhythm.

How the brain fluidly orchestrates visual behavior is a central question in cognitive neuroscience. Researchers studying neural responses in humans and nonhuman primates have mapped out visual response profiles and cognitive modulation in a large number of brain areas, most often using pared down stimuli and highly controlled behavioral paradigms. The historical emphasis on reductionism has placed most studies at one pole of an inherent trade-off between strictly controlled experimental variables and open designs that monitor the brain during its natural modes of operation. This bias toward si…

The impact of sleep loss on decision making: Opening the cognitive black box.

The impact of sleep loss on decision-making is well-documented, yet current quantitative methods often obscure the cognitive mechanisms unde … ive cognitive strategies are often overlooked, and 3) these metrics fail to incorporate advances in cognitive neuroscience. To address these issues, we advocate for integrating computational cognitive models with existing quantitative methods. These models provide precise estimates of latent cognitive processes often missed by conventional analyses. As an exemplar, we r …

The elderly neuroscience patient: implications for the critical care nurse.

The elderly patient may present to the critical care unit with neurologic deficits such as acute confusion, loss of consciousness, or signs of a cerebrovascular accident. Recognizing the normal age-related changes that occur in the nervous system enables the critical care nurse to evaluate the patient's response to neurologic disorders. The normal neurologic changes associated with aging provide implications for assessment, response to the critical care environment, and the time needed for education and rehabilitation. Other changes, especially decreased immunity, malnutrition, and pulmonary a

Another view of the history of antipsychotic drug discovery and development.

Chlorpromazine initiated effective pharmacotherapy for schizophrenia 60 years ago. This discovery initiated or stimulated key developments in the field of psychiatry. Nonetheless, advances in pharmacotherapy of schizophrenia have been modest. Psychosis remains the primary aspect of psychopathology addressed, and core pathologies such as cognition and negative symptom remain unmet therapeutic challenges. New clinical and basic neuroscience paradigms may guide the near future and provide a more heuristic construct for novel and innovative discovery.

Neuroimaging-driven recommendation systems for personalized sports training and injury prevention.

Neuroimaging has become an essential tool in sports science, offering profound insights into brain function, cognitive-motor interactions, and injury mechanisms. Traditional neuroimaging techniques, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), have significantly contributed to our understanding of brain plasticity and its role in athletic performance. However, these conventional approaches often face challenges, including low temporal resolution, sensitivity to motion artifacts, and difficulties in translating controlle

Loneliness as a sex-specific risk factor for cognitive aging.

Loneliness has emerged as a robust risk factor for adverse cognitive outcomes, including accelerated cognitive decline and increased dementia risk. However, accumulating evidence suggests that the cognitive consequences of loneliness may be sex-specific, with women experiencing disproportionate exposure, vulnerability, and downstream effects across the life course. This mini-review synthesizes epidemiological, psychosocial, and neurobiological evidence linking loneliness to cognitive aging in women, highlighting sex differences in prevalence, social role exposures (e.g., caregiving, widowhood)

How does the cerebral cortex work? Development, learning, attention, and 3-D vision by laminar circuits of visual cortex.

A key goal of behavioral and cognitive neuroscience is to link brain mechanisms to behavioral functions. The present article describes recent progress toward explaining how the visual cortex sees. Visual cortex, like many parts of perceptual and cognitive neocortex, is organized into six main layers of cells, as well as characteristic sublamina. Here it is proposed how these layered circuits help to realize processes of development, learning, perceptual grouping, attention, and 3-D vision through a combination of bottom-up, horizontal, and top-down interactions. A main theme is that the mechan…

Frontoparietal network topology as a neural marker of musical perceptual abilities.

Why are some individuals more musical than others? Neither cognitive testing nor classical localizationist neuroscience alone can provide a complete answer. Here, we test how the interplay of brain network organization and cognitive function delivers graded perceptual abilities in a distinctively human capacity. We analyze multimodal magnetic resonance imaging, cognitive, and behavioral data from 200+ participants, focusing on a canonical working memory network encompassing prefrontal and posterior parietal regions. Using graph theory, we examine structural and functional frontoparietal networ

Beyond the left-right brain divide: a framework for dual-domain cognitive fluency.

Longstanding distinctions between "verbal" and "mathematical" minds continue to shape educational assessment, curriculum design, and how learners are categorized by perceived cognitive strengths. Yet plenty of evidence from psychology and cognitive neuroscience points to a more unified model of intelligence that refutes the false dichotomy. In this article, I propose dual-domain cognitive fluency (DDCF) as a way to describe how the human mind can move fluidly between words and numbers and derive meaning from both. Building on research in symbolic cognition, executive function, and cognitive fl…

Are specific learning disorders truly specific, and are they disorders?

Specific learning disorders, such as dyslexia and dyscalculia, are frequently studied to inform our understanding of cognitive development, genetic mechanisms and brain function. In this Opinion Paper, we discuss limitations of this research approach, including the use of arbitrary criteria to select groups of children, heterogeneity within groups and overlap between domains of learning. By drawing on evidence from cognitive science, neuroscience and genetics, we propose an alternative, dimensional framework. We argue that we need to overcome the problems associated with a categorical approach

Towards a computational psychiatry of juvenile obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) most often emerges during adolescence, but we know little about the aberrant neural and cognitive developmental mechanisms that underlie its emergence during this critical developmental period. To move towards a computational psychiatry of juvenile OCD, we review studies on the computational, neuropsychological and neural alterations in juvenile OCD and link these findings to the adult OCD and cognitive neuroscience literature. We find consistent difficulties in tasks entailing complex decision making and set shifting, but limited evidence in other areas tha…

A new approach to digitized cognitive monitoring: validity of the SelfCog in Huntington's disease.

Cognitive deficits represent a hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases, but evaluating their progression is complex. Most current evaluations involve lengthy paper-and-pencil tasks which are subject to learning effects dependent on the mode of response (motor or verbal), the countries' language or the examiners. To address these limitations, we hypothesized that applying neuroscience principles may offer a fruitful alternative. We thus developed the SelfCog, a digitized battery that tests motor, executive, visuospatial, language and memory functions in 15 min. All cognitive functions are tested

Choroid plexus volume and its association with cognitive performance across the lifespan: Links to sleep quality and healthy brain aging.

The choroid plexus (ChP) is implicated in inflammation and supports the clearance of waste byproducts, particularly those related to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. Increases in ChP volume have been associated with older age and cognitive decline in both clinical and healthy cohorts. However, the clearance of waste products in the brain is also related to sleep, and sleep quality may contribute to ChP dysfunction and cognitive decline. In the present work, it was therefore hypothesized that the association between age and cognitive performance is mediated by ChP volume, however this i

Manipulation of working memory contents selectively impairs metacognitive sensitivity in a concurrent visual discrimination task.

What are the cognitive mechanisms underlying perceptual metacognition? Prior research indicates that prefrontal cortex (PFC) contributes to metacognitive performance, suggesting that metacognitive judgments are supported by high-level cognitive operations. We explored this hypothesis by investigating metacognitive performance for a visual discrimination task in the context of a concurrent working memory (WM) task. We found that, overall, high WM load caused a nonspecific decrease in visual discrimination performance as well as metacognitive performance. However, active manipulation of WM conte
