Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) in serum in bone marrow transplanted patients.

Colony-stimulating factors (CSF) are being increasingly used to accelerate hematopoietic recovery after bone marrow transplantation. To study the endogenous serum levels of CSF in bone marrow transplanted patients we have used immunoassays measuring granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) with a sensitivity of 0.10 ng/ml and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) with a sensitivity of 0.05 ng/ml. Serum samples, taken from the conditioning treatment until engraftment, were analysed in 13 patients receiving allogeneic transplants and in eight patients receiving autologou

Identification of distinct receptors for two hemopoietic growth factors (granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and multipotential colony-stimulating factor) by chemical cross-linking.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and multipotential colony-stimulating factor (multi-CSF or interleukin 3) are two members of a family of hemopoietic growth and differentiation factors. Using biologically active radioiodinated derivatives and chemical cross-linking (predominantly with the homobifunctional reagent disuccinimidyl suberate) followed by gel electrophoresis and autoradiography, receptors for these two factors have been identified. The G-CSF receptor was identified as a single subunit protein of Mr approximately 150,000 while two molecular species able to specifically c

Spontaneous Hepatobiliary Disease in a Breeding Colony of Aotus spp.

BACKGROUND: Owl monkeys are nonhuman primate species in the genus Aotus. The Michale E. Keeling Center for Comparative Medicine and Research maintains an Owl Monkey Breeding and Research Resource composed of four species of owl monkeys: Aotus nancymai, A. vociferans, A. azarae, and A. griseimembra. Disease of the hepatobiliary system has not been well characterized in Aotus. METHODS: Necropsy records from a 17-year period were reviewed to characterize the gross and microscopic lesions of liver disease. RESULTS: 316 adult owl monkeys were submitted for necropsy in the review period; 22 of 316

The Locust Fungus: A Global History of Colonial Circulation and Commodification*.

This paper examines the collection, cultivation, and distribution of the "locust fungus" in late-nineteenth century South Africa, India, and Argentina. In 1896 an amateur microscopist, Andrew W. Cooper, brought the bodies of locusts infected by a parasitic fungus to the Cape of Good Hope Colonial Bacteriological Institute, hoping that fungi collected from these specimens could be used to destroy locust swarms. Scholars have shown how empires attempted to apply scientific fixes to the problem of colonial pest control in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Yet these fixes were not

Colony complexity affects microplastic loads in Pocillopora corals.

Microplastic (MP) pollution poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems. Coral reefs, often located near land-based sources of these pollutants, act as potential sinks due to their complex three-dimensional structures. While the interactions between reef-building corals and MPs have been increasingly investigated, the role of coral structural complexity in MP accumulation remains poorly understood. This study investigated the influence of coral structural complexity on MP trapping efficiency under natural conditions, specifically aiming to: I) quantify and characterize MPs trapped by Pocil

Implementation of convolutional neural networks for microbial colony recognition.

Initial classification of microorganisms based on visual identification of colonies remains challenging for skilled microbiologists and is influenced by the proficiency and subjective interpretation of professionals. To overcome these challenges, we applied deep learning to microbial colony recognition to provide microbial data to microbiologists to assist in clinical classification. Photographs of clinically isolated microbial colonies were captured to produce a 48 × 48 pixel colony data set, which was divided into training, validation, and test data sets. Eight convolutional neural networks

High prevalence of renal amyloidosis in cats in an overcrowded colony.

Multiple cats in an overcrowded colony died of acute kidney injury with renal amyloidosis. To investigate the etiology of these deaths, we performed histological analysis of the kidneys of 27 colony cats and 29 noncolony cats (8 with acute kidney injury, 9 with chronic kidney disease, and 12 nonazotemic). Congo red-positive amyloid deposition was observed prominently in the glomeruli and cortical and medullary interstitium and was identified as AA amyloid using permanence. The prevalence and severity of renal amyloidosis were significantly higher in colony cats than in noncolony cats. Feline i

The Gendered, Misogynoiristic, and Colonial Genocidal Logics of Strip Searching.

Women with lived experience of strip searching have been calling for it to be banned as a practice for decades; however, it remains a routine practice in carceral settings such as prisons and jails. Given the mass incarceration of Indigenous women and disproportionate rate of Black women in federal prisons in Canada, an anti-racist and gendered anticolonial analysis of strip searching is warranted. Thus, this paper shares findings from conversations with 23 previously incarcerated women, the majority of whom are Black and Indigenous, about their experiences of being strip searched in prisons.

Observations about declining fertility in a feline breeding colony.

Feline breeding colonies are important to the feline industry by preserving traits desirable for a particular breed or in research settings by maintaining medically valuable genetic traits. As breeding females age, their reproductive efficiency declines. The objective of this study was to determine the most common causes of infertility in breeding females that were producing fewer kittens. Knowing the cause and average age of infertility would allow management decisions to be made for the betterment of the colony. The medical records of 70 queens retired from breeding from a single research co

Ultrastructural and immunocytochemical evidence of a colonial nervous system in hydroids.

BACKGROUND: As the sister group to all Bilateria, representatives of the phylum Cnidaria (sea anemones, corals, jellyfishes, and hydroids) possess a recognizable and well-developed nervous system and have attracted considerable attention over the years from neurobiologists and evo-devo researchers. Despite a long history of nervous system investigation in Cnidaria, most studies have been performed on unitary organisms. However, the majority of cnidarians are colonial (modular) organisms with unique and specific features of development and function. Nevertheless, data on the nervous system in c

The Clinical Significance of Staphylococcus aureus Small Colony Variants.

A burdensome, atypical phenotype of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) called S aureus small colony variant (SA-SCV) has been identified, which is induced as a result of a combination of environmental stressors, including polymicrobial interactions. The SA-SCVs exhibit altered phenotypes as a result of metabolic dormancy caused by electron transport deficiency, leading to increased biofilm production and alterations to antimicrobial susceptibility. The SA-SCVs typically exhibit altered colony morphology and biochemical reactions compared with wild-type SA, making them difficult to detect via routine d

Euthanasia of honey-bee colonies: Proposal of a standard method.

Honey bees are most often kept for production purposes. Sanitary, regulatory, or zootechnical circumstances may lead the beekeeper or the veterinarian to dispose of a honey-bee colony. Unfortunately and at present, no standard method of euthanasia exists, leaving the door open to many more or less acceptable practices. Based on a short survey of current practices in 8 countries, we list and rank these methods. Although imperfect, the sulfur dioxide technique appears to be the most efficient. We suggest that it should become the reference method to be taught and incorporated into veterinary and

Giardia duodenalis in colony stray cats from Italy.

Giardia duodenalis is the most common intestinal protozoan in humans and animals worldwide, including eight morphologically identical assemblages, infecting pets, livestock, wildlife and human beings. Assemblages A and B are those with the higher zoonotic potential, and they have been detected in several mammals other than humans; the others (C to H) show a higher host specificity. Cats can harbour both the specific Assemblage F and the zoonotic ones A and B. Several studies have been carried out on G. duodenalis genotypes in cats; however, the role of this species in the epidemiology of giard

The Effects of Topographic Micropatterning on Endothelial Colony-Forming Cells.

Artificial small-diameter vascular grafts remain an unmet need in modern medicine, due to the thrombosis and neointimal hyperplasia that plague currently available synthetic devices. Tissue engineering techniques, including in vitro endothelialization, could offer a solution to this problem. A potential minimally invasive source of patient autologous endothelium is endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs), endothelial-like outgrowth products of circulating progenitors. While ECFCs respond to shear stress similar to mature endothelial cells (ECs), their response to luminal topographic micropatt

A new method for the production of sterile colonies of Lucilia sericata.

Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) refers to the use of blowfly larvae to clean or debride an infected wound. Most commonly, larvae of Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are used, and are sterilized prior to use to ensure no further bacterial infections are introduced during treatment. Current methods sterilize eggs from laboratory-reared blowfly colonies, after which sterile early second instar maggots can be provided to hospitals for use in treatment. Maggots not required for treatment are used for colony regeneration, in which sterility is not maintained. The ability to mainta

Between Colonial, National, and International Medicine: The Case of Bejel.

In the 1920s and 1930s, doctors stationed in the Middle East and North Africa debated whether bejel, a form of endemic syphilis, was an Arab version of syphilis, or a separate disease altogether. Using their clinical experience in the region, they tried to weave this unfamiliar phenomenon into a civilizational narrative, which placed European civilization at the top of a hierarchy. The assumption was that there was something inherent to Islamic societies and their hygienic habits that accounted for this difference. After World War II, the eradication of bejel was declared to be one of the obje
