A Comparison of Voice Amplifiers and Personal Communication Systems for Hypophonia: An Exploration of Communicative Participation.

PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate how individuals with hypophonia (HP; also referred to as HP participants) and their primary communication partners (PCPs; also referred to as PCP participants) rate communicative participation before and after experience with a speech amplification device. A secondary purpose was to evaluate pre- and post-device effects on self-rated communicative participation for each of the three speech amplification devices trialed outside of the laboratory. METHOD: Seventeen individuals with HP and their PCPs participated in a crossover design st

Measuring Communicative Congruence and Communicative Dysphoria in a Sample of Individuals Without Voice Disorders.

PURPOSE: This study examines communicative congruence and communicative dysphoria in adults who deny having a voice disorder. Communicative congruence is the degree to which a person's communication is consistent with their sense of self/identity. Communicative dysphoria is the psychological entropy resulting from communicative incongruence. We propose that these experiences may influence patients' psychosocial well-being and are thus relevant to the field of speech-language pathology. We hypothesized that both constructs would be normally distributed with an inverse relationship. We also hypo

It's what the community demands: Results of community-based emergency opioid overdose trainings.

OBJECTIVES: In response to a surge of drug overdoses involving polysubstance use among Atlanta service industry workers that resulted in the deaths of five people in the Atlanta area in the summer of 2021, a local community of harm reductionists and nurses organized opioid education and naloxone distribution (OEND) training sessions specifically customized for service industry workers in Atlanta. After the sessions, the nurses and harm reductionists asked attendants to participate in a study concerning their response to overdoses. The reason nurses and harm reductionists conducted the study wa

A Community-Based System Dynamics Study of the Senior Community Service Employment Program

Abstract The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), the only federal workforce-training program that targets older adults, engages people aged 55 years and older with incomes at or below 125% of the federal poverty level with multiple barriers to employment. This study examined SCSEP’s role in participant financial, physical, and mental well-being. To do so, we held five sessions (four virtual, one telephone) over a combined nine hours in August and September 2020 using a form of participatory research called community-based system dynamics with 15 Massachusetts SCSEP participant

Community dashboards to support data-informed decision-making in the HEALing communities study.

BACKGROUND: With opioid misuse, opioid use disorder (OUD), and opioid overdose deaths persisting at epidemic levels in the U.S., the largest implementation study in addiction research-the HEALing Communities Study (HCS)-is evaluating the impact of the Communities That Heal (CTH) intervention on reducing opioid overdose deaths in 67 disproportionately affected communities from four states (i.e., "sites"). Community-tailored dashboards are central to the CTH intervention's mandate to implement a community-engaged and data-driven process. These dashboards support a participating community's decis

Depression Is Real: Developing a Health Communication Campaign in an Urban African American Community.

BACKGROUND: Depression is the leading cause of disability in the United States. African Americans are disproportionately affected owing to systemic and sociocultural factors. Stigma, denial, and inadequate knowledge on depression are significant barriers to mental help seeking. Addressing mental health literacy can improve mental health knowledge, management, and outcomes. West Louisville, a predominantly African American community, is of particular interest regarding mental health literacy given existing socioeconomic and health disparities. Boot Camp Translation (BCT), a community-based part

Community-Led Action to Reduce Menthol Cigarette Use in the African American Community.

Background. African Americans suffer a disproportionate burden of tobacco harm and researchers have posited that menthol cigarettes are a key contributor to this disparity. In 2015, a county health department and African American community-based organization (CBO) in Minnesota partnered to educate and engage the African American community on menthol and its role in tobacco-related health disparities. The following case study describes successes, challenges, and recommendations from this work. We focus on the role of a public health and community partnership in menthol policy adoption so others

An examination of radon awareness, risk communication, and radon risk reduction in a Hispanic community.

Purpose: Radiation risk communication is a critical component of radiation protection and the public's understanding of radiation risks and benefits. Risk communication becomes even more complicated when considering cultural and language differences. In the US, many diverse communities face risk communication challenges. We obtained radon testing data to evaluate patterns of radon testing in Allentown, the third largest city in Pennsylvania. Radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking and is associated with over 21,000 lung cancer deaths in the US annually. It is es

Ineffective communication equals no communication: a case report of splenic hyperfunction combined with pseudothrombocytopenia.

Thrombocytopenia may be caused by diseases of various organ systems, especially the blood system. Certain drugs may also cause thrombocytopenia. In addition, it can result from various causes of pseudo-reduction. Therefore, a correct understanding of the causes of thrombocytopenia and their underlying mechanisms has important significance for clinical diagnosis and treatment. This study aimed to report a case of a 68-year-old woman with left upper abdominal mass and loss of appetite. The auxiliary examination showed splenomegaly and thrombocytopenia. The clinician planned to perform splenectom

Implementing Aided Augmentative Communication Systems With Persons Having Complex Communicative Needs.

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems can support communication skills for people with significant developmental disabilities who experience complex communication needs (CCNs). There is a need to tailor best practices in AAC assessment and intervention to create individualized communication systems with this population. In this article, we outline the important components of AAC systems that can be implemented in authentic settings. However, given the limited evidence on AAC interventions specific to people with CCNs, we also identify some priority areas for future inquiry.

Unravelling virus community ecology in bats through the integration of metagenomics and community ecology.

The spillover of viruses from wildlife into agricultural animals or humans has profound socioeconomic and public health impact. Vampire bats, found throughout South America, feed directly on humans and other animals and are an important reservoir for zoonotic viruses, including rabies virus. This has resulted in considerable effort in understanding both the ecology of bat-borne viruses and the composition and associated correlates of the structure of entire virus communities in wildlife, particularly in the context of disease control interventions. In a From the Cover article in this issue of

Promoting Conditional Use of Communication Skills for Learners With Complex Communication Needs: A Tutorial.

PURPOSE: Conditional use of communication skills refers to the ability of a learner to appropriately generalize and discriminate when, where, and how to communicate based on constant variation and shifts in environmental cues. METHOD: We describe discrimination and generalization challenges encountered by learners with complex communication needs and ways in which these challenges are fostered through traditional communication intervention programming. We address arrangements in instruction that maximize the probability of learners acquiring the conditional use of new vocabulary and the modes

Complexities of emergency communication: clinicians' perceptions of communication challenges in a trilingual emergency department.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To understand the challenges that clinicians face in communicating with patients and other clinicians within a Hong Kong trilingual emergency department. BACKGROUND: Effective communication has long been recognised as fundamental to the delivery of quality health care, especially in high-risk and time-constrained environments such as emergency departments. The issue of effective communication is particularly relevant in Hong Kong emergency departments, due to the high volume of patients and the linguistic complexity of this healthcare context. In Hong Kong, emergency depa

A longitudinal investigation of childhood communication ability and adolescent psychotic experiences in a community sample.

BACKGROUND: Some childhood speech and language impairments precede psychosis but it is not clear whether they also precede adolescent psychotic experiences and whether this association is specific to psychotic experiences. METHODS: Pragmatic language and expressive speech and language (parent-assessed using the Children's Communication Checklist) at age 9 and psychotic experiences and depression at ages 12 and 18 were investigated in 7659 participants from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Associations were investigated using multivariate modelling. RESULTS: Poorer pragmat

Measuring Early Communication in Spanish Speaking Children: The Communication Complexity Scale in Peru.

BACKGROUND: There is a great need in the United States to develop presymbolic evaluation tools that are widely available and accurate for individuals that come from a bilingual and/or multicultural setting. The Communication Complexity Scale (CCS) is a measure that evaluates expressive presymbolic communication including gestures, vocalizations and eye gaze. Studying the effectiveness of this tool in a Spanish speaking environment was undertaken to determine the applicability of the CCS with Spanish speaking children. Methods & Procedures: In 2011-2012, researchers from the University of Kansa

Passive samplers and community science in regional air quality measurement, education and communication.

Charlotte, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, was ranked in the top ten cities with the worst air quality for ozone in the United States by the American Lung Association from 2009 to 2011. Nearby counties that may experience similar air quality do not have state or county monitors. This study utilized NOx and ozone Ogawa passive samplers and community scientists to monitor air quality in five counties surrounding Charlotte and increase public engagement in air quality issues. Community scientists deployed samplers weekly at a residential site within each county. Samples were analyzed using

A case of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections in a community hospital.

Infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) have recently occurred in communities in people lacking known healthcare risk factors. This MRSA infection is referred to as community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) infection, and is distinct from hospital-associated MRSA infection, which occurs in people with risk factors. We experienced a patient diagnosed with CA-MRSA cellulitis, as culture of pus revealed MRSA and he had not been exposed to healthcare environments for the past year. The patient was a previously healthy 38-year-old man with suppurative cellulitis in his rig

Effects of AAC interventions on communication and language for young children with complex communication needs.

Children with complex communication needs (CCN) who require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) are at considerable risk in many aspects of their development: (a) functional communication skills, (b) speech development, (c) language development, (d) cognitive/conceptual development, (e) literacy development, (f) social participation, (g) access to education, and (h) overall quality of life. Early intervention is critical to address these areas and provide successful and functional outcomes. AAC offers the potential to enhance communication, language, and learning for children with
