Beyond choice: social realities shaping pregnancy decisions and family planning agency among Black women in the south.

INTRODUCTION: While data on the factors associated with the sexual and reproductive health of Black women is growing, few studies have applied a reproductive justice framework to their analyses, and few have assessed the role social realities play on reproductive decision-making. METHODS: We analyzed data collected from a community-based participatory study, conducted between May 2019 and January 2020. The parent study aimed to get an understanding of the reproductive health experiences and concerns of Black women living in two southern states, Georgia and North Carolina. For this paper, we u

Multilevel mixed effects analysis of individual and community level factors associated with modern contraceptive use among married women in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: In spite of the universal right for women to decide freely for themselves when, and how many children they want to have in life, married women in Uganda are less likely to use modern contraceptives as compared to other marital categories. This study examines the individual and community factors associated with modern contraceptive use among married women in Uganda. METHODS: The study used data from the 2016 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey which comprised of 8671 married women aged 15-49 years who were fecund and non-pregnant at the time of the survey. Analysis was done using

Mass vaccination campaigns for polio eradication: an essential strategy for success.

Effective vaccines against poliomyelitis became available in the mid-1950s and early 1960s. Mass campaigns were an integral part of early control efforts. Thereafter, polio vaccines were used largely in routine childhood programs. The resolution in 1988 to eradicate polio globally led to the development of appropriate strategies to achieve this goal, including mass vaccination campaigns (i.e., national immunization days, sub-national immunization days and mop-up activities), to achieve the highest possible coverage in the shortest possible time. Unlike other vaccines, mass campaign use of oral

A functional needs approach to emergency planning.

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to test the ability of the St Louis County Department of Health to efficiently dispense medication to individuals with functional needs during a public health emergency and develop new guidelines for future emergency planning. Historically, people with functional needs have been vulnerable in emergency situations, and emergency planners are responsible for creating equal access for mass prophylaxis events. METHODS: Measures to create access for individuals with functional needs were tested in a countywide exercise in which 40 volunteers with functional need

Survey of nursing and medical profile prior to deinstitutionalization of a population with profound mental retardation.

During the planning stages of deinstitutionalization, the importance of nursing services must be recognized and given priority consideration in the community placement of persons with serious developmental disabilities. The objective of this study was to survey the medical and nursing profile of a group of nonambulatory, institutionalized individuals with profound mental retardation in anticipation of their nursing and medical needs in the community. Data were collected from the Individual Habilitation Plans of 55 individuals who had resided in a residential facility for individuals with menta

Individual, community and service environment factors associated with modern contraceptive use in five Sub-Saharan African countries: A multilevel, multinomial analysis using geographically linked data from PMA2020.

The importance of the family planning service environment and community-level factors on contraceptive use has long been studied. Few studies, however, have been able to link individual and health facility data from surveys that are nationally representative, concurrently fielded, and geographically linked. Data from Performance Monitoring and Accountability 2020 address these limitations. To assess the relative influences of the service delivery environment and community, household, and individual factors on a woman's likelihood of using a modern contraceptive in five geographically and cultu

Family planning in a sub-district near Kumasi, Ghana: side effect fears, unintended pregnancies and misuse of a medication as emergency contraception.

The Barekuma Collaborative Community Development Project (BCCDP) performed a study regarding family planning in communities in the Barekese sub-district near Kumasi, Ghana in July 2010. Eighty-five women, ages 15-49 years, in three communities were interviewed with a modified version of the 2008 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey. While virtually all women recognized at least one family planning method, half of all recent or current pregnancies were unintended and 20 percent of women had a previous abortion. Unexpectedly, 27 percent of women had misused norethisterone tablets (Primolut N or "

Social support and social action organizing in a "grey ghetto": the tenderloin experience. 1982-83.

The Tenderloin Senior Outreach Project (TSOP) is presented as a case study of effective community-based organizing among the isolated elderly in one of America's large "grey ghettos." Based on the theoretical underpinnings of social support theory and Freire's "education for critical consciousness," the Project has attempted to address the interrelated problems of poor health, social isolation and powerlessness endemic among the elderly in Single Room Occupancy hotels. The Project's metamorphosis is traced from a university-sponsored community development effort to a communitycontrolled organi

Successful implementation of Thai Family Matters: strategies and implications.

This article discusses the successful process used to assess the feasibility of implementing the Family Matters program in Bangkok, Thailand. This is important work since adopting and adapting evidence-based programs is a strategy currently endorsed by leading prevention funding sources, particularly in the United States. The original Family Matters consists of four booklets designed to increase parental communication with their adolescent children in order to delay onset of or decrease alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. As part of the program, health educators contact parents by telephone

Social networks and community prevention coalitions.

This study investigates the links between community readiness and the social networks among participants in Communities That Care (CTC), community-based prevention coalitions. The coalitions targeted adolescent behavior problems through community risk factor assessments, prioritization of risk factors, and selection/implementation of corresponding evidence-based family, school, and community programs. Key leaders (n = 219) in 23 new CTC sites completed questionnaires focusing on community readiness to implement CTC and the respondents' personal, work, and social organization links to other key

Modern Family Planning Utilization and Its Associated Factors among Currently Married Women in Rural Eastern Ethiopia: A Community-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: The use of modern family planning methods among women of reproductive age (15-49 years) is of public health importance in Ethiopia. Investigating the early impact of the Trump Administration's Global Gag Rule on sexual and reproductive health service delivery in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The Global Gag Rule (GGR), reinstated by President Trump in January 2017, makes non-U.S. non-governmental organizations ineligible for U.S. foreign assistance if they provide access to or information about abortion. While evidence suggests previous iterations of the GGR negatively impacted sexual and reproductive health outcomes, no studies have quantitatively assessed the impacts of the Trump administration's GGR. METHODS: We constructed a panel dataset of facilities (76% public) using 2017/2018 Performance Monitoring and Accountability 2020 service delivery point (SDP) surveys i
