Lime addition as well as formation of struvite through the addition of magnesium and phosphorus salts provide good pH buffering and may reduce odour emission. This study investigated the odour emission during food waste composting under the influence of lime addition, and struvite formation. Composting was performed in 20-L reactors for 56days using artificial food waste mixed with sawdust at 1.2:1 (w/w dry basis). VFA was one of the most important odours during food waste composting. However, during thermophilic phase, ammonia is responsible for max odour index in the exhaust gas. Trapping am…

Paper mill bamboo sludge (PMBS) and Paper mill lime waste (PMLW) are extensively produced as solid wastes in paper mills. Untreated PMBS and PMLW contain substantial amount of heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Ni, Cd, Cr) in soluble forms. Efficiency of vermiconversion and aerobic composting with these wastes is reported here. Adopted bioconversion systems enhanced the availability of some essential nutrients (N, P, K and Zn) in various combinations of cow dung (CD) with PMBS and PMLW. Colonization of nitrogen fixing bacteria and phosphate solubilizing bacteria considerably intensified under the vermiconv…

A laboratory study was conducted to enhance removal of residual contaminants after composting in a highly petroleum-contaminated soil by combining Fenton-like pretreatment with biodegradation. The contaminants were characterized by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) during soil treatment. The optimum molar ratio of H(2)O(2) and Fe(3+) was 300/1 determined in batch experiments. At the end of Fenton-like treatment, total dichloromethane-extractable organics (TEO) decreased from 32,400 to 21,800 mg kg(-1) soil, and the toxicity of soil was reduced greatly in t…

It was previously reported that struvite crystals could be formed in the aerobic composting reaction provided that Mg and P salts are added [Bioresource Technology 79 (2001) 129]. The formation of struvite crystals significantly reduced gaseous loss of ammonia and resulted in substantial increase in the ammonia content in the compost, attaining 1.5%. In this context, the present study was conducted to determine the optimal doses of Mg and P salts for struvite crystallization. It was found that cumulative ammonia production was about 33-36% of the initial total nitrogen in the aerobic compostin…

Pharmaceuticals enter the environment mainly via municipal wastewater treatment plants, where some compounds bind to sewage sludge during treatment processes. The contaminated sludge often undergoes fermentation and composting and is later used as a soil amendment. This study aims to investigate the fate of five pharmaceuticals letrozole, tamoxifen, carbamazepine, diclofenac, and naproxen, in environmental solid matrices, including sewage sludge, compost, and sediment. An analytical method based on microwave-assisted extraction, SPE, and UPLC-MS/MS was developed and validated. The most abundan…

BACKGROUND: Soilborne fungal phytopathogens pose a significant threat to global food security. While chemical control remains an effective method for managing these pathogens, increasing regulations due to health and environmental concerns, along with rising fungicide resistance, have restricted their use, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable alternatives. The use of compost to enhance soil fertility and suppress plant diseases is well documented. Several studies have underlined the role of microorganisms in disease suppression, but the mechanisms facilitating this disease suppression

This study investigated the presence of culturable bacterial pathogens, and antibiotic resistance and associated genes (quantitative PCR) in commercially available composted products from animal excrements or manure (n = 7), urban wastes (n = 1) or (sewage sludge) (n = 1). Metals quantification and 16S rRNA-based bacterial community composition analyses supported the results to infer potential risks to downstream environments (e.g., soils). Bacilli and Actinomycetes were the dominant bacterial classes in seven composts, while two were dominated by different classes of Pseudomonadota or the cla

The fate of the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole in amended soils remains unclear, moreover in basic soils. This work aimed to assess the adsorption, leaching, and biodegradation of sulfamethoxazole in unamended and biochar from holm oak pruning (BC)- and green compost from urban pruning (CG)-amended basic soil. Adsorption properties of the organic amendments and soil were determined by adsorption isotherms of sulfamethoxazole. The leachability of this antibiotic from unamended (Soil) and BC- (Soil + BC) and GC- (Soil + GC) amended soil was determined by leaching columns using water as solvent up t

Composting is an important decentralized technology for treating multiple biodegradable organic wastes in rural areas. However, compared to industrial composting (i.e., time and temperature protocols), rural composting is less well-controlled, and the risk of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in these composts needs to be determined. We performed a quantitative determination of ARGs and both prokaryotes and eukaryotes to investigate the liquid-solid leaching ratio and the relationship between ARGs and microbial communities in solid and water extracts of composts collected from rural areas. We…

Amending soils with compost has become increasingly common in stormwater management practices. Compost can be a source and sink for nutrients and heavy metals, and it is important to understand the effect of compost on pollutant leaching under different hydrologic conditions. The objectives of this study were (a) to quantify the distribution coefficient (Kd ) of PO4 -P and metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) for compost-soil blends and (b) to examine how compost rate alters leaching patterns of nutrients (NH4 -N, NO3 -N, PO4 -P) and metals from compost-soil blends. Material consisted of a sandy lo

The maturity of compost is involved in the availability of nutrients to crops and improvement of soil properties after fertilization. In the past, the determination of composts maturity mostly required analysis in the laboratory previously and it must consume a lot of time and cost. This study was conducted to use Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and solid 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (13C NMR) spectroscopy to understand the mature characteristics of five type of common composts. The FTIR analysis showed that all composts contained aromatic groups. In addition, the surface of f

Phosphate-solubilizing (PS) microbes are important to improve phosphorus availability and transformation of insoluble phosphate, e.g., rock phosphate (RP). The use of phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) as inoculants have been proposed as an alternative to increase phosphate availability in RP and composting fertilizers. In this study, the effect of compound PSB coinoculation and single-strain inoculation on the transformation of insoluble phosphate were compared in a liquid medium incubation and RP-enriched composting. The goal of this study was to understand the possible mechanisms of inso…

Livestock manure is a major reservoir of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This study investigated the distribution characteristics of ARB, ARGs in fresh and composted manures of traditional breading industry in rural areas in China. Samples collected were naturally piled without professional composting, and will be applied to farmland. The real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) results showed the presence of ten target ARGs and two mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in the tested manure samples. The relative abundance of tetracycline and …

Antibiotics persistence in the primary sludge can contribute to the emergence of these molecules in the environment and limit the agricultural recycling of sludge without any preliminary treatment. Composting is a widely used process for recycling sludges and then can contribute to the antibiotics removal. However, little interest is actually given to the evaluation of the persistence of some antibiotics families after the sludge co-composting and more particularly to the final compost valorization. In this work, antibiotics concentrations of βeta-lactams, Macrolides, Lincosamide, Tetracycline…

PURPOSE: The study examines the effectiveness of red mud, blast furnace (BF) slag, and alum-derived water treatment sludge as immobilizing agents for excessive soluble P that had accumulated in three green waste-based composts.
METHODS: The three wastes were applied at 0%, 5%, 10%, and 20% w/w to three different composts, all containing extremely high concentrations of extractable P, and were incubated for 60 days. Water-soluble P was measured regularly throughout the incubation period, and at the end, P extractable with resin, 0.05 M NaHCO(3), and 0.005 M H(2)SO(4) were also measured.

Compost and phototrophic bacteria are found to be able to degrade trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE). With a TCE dose increase by more than 10 mg/kg, the TCE degradation decreases due to the toxic effect of this pollutant on microbial consortium activity. The addition of compost combined with a liquid culture of phototrophic bacteria (PTB) is experimentally proved to effectively decrease the TCE content in soil and water.
