Presumptive non-cirrhotic bleeding esophageal varices in a dog.

An 8-year-old male American Staffordshire terrier was admitted for evaluation of chronic episodes of ptyalism and hematemesis after exercise. Abnormalities were not detected on routine clinicopathological tests, thoracic radiography, and abdominal ultrasonography. Endoscopic examination revealed a labyrinthine network of severely distended, hemorrhagic esophageal blood vessels. Computed tomography angiography demonstrated a network of para-esophageal vessels that communicated with the celiac artery caudally and the brachiocephalic trunk cranially, consistent with a diagnosis of non-cirrhotic e

Inner Speech Decoding: A Comprehensive Review.

Inner speech decoding is the process of identifying silently generated speech from neural signals. In recent years, this candidate technology has gained momentum as a possible way to support communication in severely impaired populations. Specifically, this approach promises hope for people with a variety of physical or neurological disabilities who need alternative means of verbal expression. This review covers recording modalities that range from the noninvasive EEG to the high-density electrocorticography and discusses how linear discriminant analysis, deep convolutional networks, and hybri

Computational Decoding of Cell-Cell Communications in Heterogeneous Cellular Microenvironments Based on Spatial Transcriptomics.

Cell-cell communication (CCC) is a fundamental message-passing process through which biochemical signals help coordinate cell behaviors and functions. Understanding CCC is crucial to uncovering the driving force of cellular dynamics, as well as providing biological insights into immune response coordination and response to outer factors like virus infections. Studies of CCC have traditionally relied on bulk and single-cell transcriptomics. As the study of CCC progresses, researchers have a growing interest in capturing the spatial context, temporal dynamics, and heterogeneous interactions acro

Multiscale systems modelling of communication networks in brain metastasis.

Brain metastasis remains a major clinical challenge because intracranial progression and therapeutic resistance arise not only from tumour-intrinsic programmes but also from coordinated communication across molecular, cellular, spatial and systemic scales. In this Review, we integrate findings from spatial transcriptomics/proteomics, single-cell and multimodal omics, and computational systems modelling to frame brain metastasis as a multiscale communication disorder in which immune, glial, vascular and systemic networks collectively shape tumour-permissive ecosystems. We discuss how network-ba

Evolutionary Kuramoto dynamics unravels origins of chimera states in neural populations.

Neural synchronization is central to cognition. However, incomplete synchronization often produces chimera states, where coherent and incoherent dynamics coexist. Recent studies have suggested that these chimera states could be important in human cognitive organization. In particular, chimera states have been suggested as a regulator of cognitive integration and regulation with varying quality as humans age. While previous studies have explored such chimera states using networks of coupled oscillators, it remains unclear why neurons commit to communication or how chimera states persist. Here,

Sub-THz Channel Characterization and Antenna Array Design for 6G Smart Factory Environments at 140 GHz.

The ultra-high data rate and ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) requirements of Industry 4.0 and smart factory applications have made the evaluation of Sub-Terahertz (Sub-THz) frequencies, especially the 140 GHz band, in sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks a considerable research area. Nevertheless, modern literature often makes isotropic assumptions that do not account for the extreme free-space path loss and highly metallic obstacles associated with sub-THz frequencies. To solve this problem, this paper suggests a comprehensive framework combining high-gain directional ante

Sustainable Hierarchical Networking for Extreme-Edge AI-Based Wildlife Monitoring in Resource-Constrained Environments.

Deploying artificial intelligence (AI) for wildlife monitoring in remote environments remains challenging due to limited energy, computational resources, and unreliable communication. Conventional edge AI systems rely on continuous sensing, high-power communication, and full-precision models, resulting in excessive energy consumption. This paper presents a green-energy-based hierarchical network architecture for sustainable wildlife monitoring at the extreme edge. The framework distributes sensing, communication, and AI inference across edge, far-edge, and extreme-edge layers. A low-power IEEE

Medusa: a scalable MR console using USB.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) pulse sequence consoles typically employ closed proprietary hardware, software, and interfaces, making difficult any adaptation for innovative experimental technology. Yet MRI systems research is trending to higher channel count receivers, transmitters, gradient/shims, and unique interfaces for interventional applications. Customized console designs are now feasible for researchers with modern electronic components, but high data rates, synchronization, scalability, and cost present important challenges. Implementing large multichannel MR systems with efficienc

Multimodal Assessment of Consciousness with Brain-Computer Interfaces and Artificial Intelligence: From Acquired Brain Injury to Neurodegenerative Disease.

The assessment of consciousness has been shaped largely by research on acquired disorders of consciousness after acute or chronic brain injury, but similar problems of unreliable behavioral expression increasingly arise in neurodegenerative disease. This translational overlap is especially relevant when preserved cognition, awareness, or intentionality cannot be reliably expressed because of severe motor impairment, fluctuating arousal, cognitive decline, aphasia, apraxia, or impaired cooperation. In neurodegenerative disease, degeneration of arousal systems, large-scale brain networks, cognit

A distributed, collaborative intelligent agent system approach for proactive postmarketing drug safety surveillance.

Discovering unknown adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in postmarketing surveillance as early as possible is of great importance. The current approach to postmarketing surveillance primarily relies on spontaneous reporting. It is a passive surveillance system and limited by gross underreporting (<10% reporting rate), latency, and inconsistent reporting. We propose a novel team-based intelligent agent software system approach for proactively monitoring and detecting potential ADRs of interest using electronic patient records. We designed such a system and named it ADRMonitor. The intelligent agents,

Silence and related symptoms in children and adolescents: a network approach to selective mutism.

BACKGROUND: Silence in certain situations represents the core symptom of selective mutism (SM). However, it is unclear what additional symptoms are part of this disorder. Although knowledge of symptoms is essential for diagnostics and intervention, to date, only scarce research exists on circumscribed symptoms of SM. Given the large overlap between SM and social anxiety disorder (SAD), it remains also unclear which symptoms can differentiate both disorders. METHODS: A network analysis of potential symptoms of SM was performed based on a mixed sample of N = 899 children and adolescents with an
