Interoceptive fear conditioning as a learning model of panic disorder: an experimental evaluation using 20% CO(2)-enriched air in a non-clinical sample.

Despite the role afforded interoceptive fear conditioning in etiologic accounts of panic disorder, there are no good experimental demonstrations of such learning in humans. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the interoceptive conditioning account using 20% carbon dioxide (CO(2))-enriched air as an interoceptive conditioned stimulus (CS) (i.e., physiologically inert 5-s exposures) and unconditioned stimulus (US) (i.e., physiologically prepotent 15-s exposures). Healthy participants (N=42) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: a CS-only, contingent CS-US pairings, or unpai

Human nicotine conditioning requires explicit contingency knowledge: is addictive behaviour cognitively mediated?

RATIONALE: Two seemingly contrary theories describe the learning mechanisms that mediate human addictive behaviour. According to the classical incentive theories of addiction, addictive behaviour is motivated by a Pavlovian conditioned appetitive emotional response elicited by drug-paired stimuli. Expectancy theory, on the other hand, argues that addictive behaviour is mediated by an expectancy of the drug imparted by cognitive knowledge of the Pavlovian (predictive) contingency between stimuli (S+) and the drug and of the instrumental (causal) contingency between instrumental behaviour and th

Increased susceptibility to auditory conditioning in hallucinating schizophrenic patients: a preliminary investigation.

Auditory hallucinations have been elicited in the laboratory after repeated pairings of a tone (unconditioned stimulus) with a light (conditioned stimulus), until the presentation of the light alone resulted in subjects hearing the tone. This auditory sensory-conditioning phenomenon was first reported in normal subjects over a half-century ago. But the model remains, to date, untested in actively hallucinating patients. If sensory-conditioning mechanisms actually mediate the occurrence of clinical hallucinations, one would expect that hallucinating patients would more readily acquire and be mo

Removal of reinforcement improves instrumental performance in humans by decreasing a general action bias rather than unmasking learnt associations.

Performance during instrumental learning is commonly believed to reflect the knowledge that has been acquired up to that point. However, recent work in rodents found that instrumental performance was enhanced during periods when reinforcement was withheld, relative to periods when reinforcement was provided. This suggests that reinforcement may mask acquired knowledge and lead to impaired performance. In the present study, we investigated whether such a beneficial effect of removing reinforcement translates to humans. Specifically, we tested whether performance during learning was improved dur

Understanding fear of pain in chronic pain: interoceptive fear conditioning as a novel approach.

The current review deals with interoceptive conditioning as a viable mechanism maintaining fear of pain: The available literature suggests that interoceptive - i.e., internal bodily - sensations may become predictors of pain and will subsequently elicit fear of pain. After a short overview of interoceptive (fear) conditioning and its role in the maintenance of panic disorder, the existing literature on conditioning in the field of pain and fear of pain is reviewed. Next, the authors propose an interoceptive fear conditioning model of fear of pain, suggesting that bodily sensations can function

Varieties of generalization inspired by Pavlov's legacy.

In this selective review, we summarise recent studies from our laboratory in which we have assessed the effect of different variables (such as contiguity and contingency) on the generalization of prior learning. Much of this work was inspired by Pavlov's work in which it was first documented that trace conditioning can broaden generalization, a finding that we have replicated in human participants. We then describe studies in which we have assessed whether the affective valence of stimuli and outcomes can affect generalization, and we find that indeed human participants can generalize across t

Moderators of nocebo effects in controlled experiments: A multi-level meta-analysis.

Nocebo effects are a heterogenous phenomenon in which contextual cues trigger or exacerbate symptoms independently of active interventions. Suggestion, conditioning, and social observation are widely recognised as hallmark methods for inducing nocebo effects, but the extent to which nocebo effects are differentially influenced by suggestion type (e.g., direct or indirect suggestion) and mode of administration (e.g., verbal, textual, visual, etc.) across symptom domains remains unknown. We conducted a pre-registered meta-analysis (PROSPERO registration number CRD42023402097) to quantitatively s

Acquisition, generalization and renewal of instrumental pain-related avoidance behavior in high-versus low-anxious individuals.

Excessive avoidance is a key contributor to chronic pain-related disability. In the acute stage, pain-related avoidance prevents further harm, but when it persists beyond healing time it becomes maladaptive. Exposure therapy is the preferred treatment, yet avoidance often returns. Changing contexts (e.g., from therapy to home) may contribute to avoidance returning, referred to as renewal. This study aimed to experimentally investigate the moderating effects of trait anxiety on renewal of fear and avoidance, as well as on fear and avoidance during acquisition, generalization and response preven

Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer effect after devaluation as indicator of habitual behavior together with stress responsivity predicts daily use of buying-shopping platforms.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Stress responsivity and habitual behaviors are related to problematic online buying-shopping (BSh) according to the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution (I-PACE) model. This study aimed to investigate if symptoms of problematic online BSh, an experimental indicator of habitual behavior and the interaction of potentially habitual behavior and stress responsivity predict everyday use of buying-shopping platforms. PARTICIPANTS: The study comprised participants with risky (n = 27) and non-problematic (n = 28) online BSh. DESIGN AND MEASUREMENTS: A Pavlovian-to-in

Conditioned contribution of peripheral cocaine actions to cocaine reward and cocaine-seeking.

Cocaine has actions in the peripheral nervous system that reliably precede--and thus predict--its soon-to-follow central rewarding effects. In cocaine-experienced animals, the peripheral cocaine signal is relayed to the central nervous system, triggering excitatory input to the ventral tegmental origin of the mesocorticolimbic dopamine system, the system that mediates the rewarding effects of the drug. We used cocaine methiodide, a cocaine analog that does not cross the blood-brain barrier, to isolate the peripheral actions of cocaine and determine their central and behavioral effects in anima

Strain, self-control, and spousal violence: a study of husband-to-wife violence in Hong Kong.

This study examines the applicability of Agnew's strain theory and Gottfredson and Hirschi's self-control theory in explaining husband-to-wife psychological aggression and physical assault in a community survey of 871 couples in Hong Kong. Three strains, each belonging to 1 type of Agnew's types of strain, were selected, namely, dissatisfaction with family financial situation, dissatisfaction with relationship with spouse, and physical abuse by parents in childhood. Self-control was measured with a simplified version of 12 items selected from the 24-item Self-control Scale developed by Grasmic

Baseline vagal tone and pain reactivity: linking autonomic function to endogenous pain inhibition in women.

INTRODUCTION: Conditioned pain modulation (CPM) is a laboratory test of the efficacy of endogenous pain inhibition. Although the vagus nerve is thought to contribute to analgesia via descending inhibitory pathways, its role in CPM remains unclear. In addition, as vagal tone fluctuates across the menstrual cycle due to hormonal changes, the menstrual cycle's influence on the vagal-CPM association warrants investigation. METHODS: Sixty-seven healthy females completed psychological questionnaires and underwent psychophysical assessments (1-minute tonic heat pain [THP] given alone and during CPM)

[Evaluation and treatment of the enuretic child: eight years' experience].

Enuresis is a common functional problem among children which is defined as a complete involuntary voiding of urine at an age which control should be present. Bed wetting generally resolves with increasing age, but the restriction in social life and the psychological secondary problems, so frequent in older patients, justify an appropriate treatment of the problem in the child over seven. At children's Hospital of Florence University an enuresis service exists since 1983, and during these years 541 children applied to the structure. 326 children completed the treatment, among these there were 2

Effects of the SmartACT Intervention on Motor and Psychological Variables in Adolescent Athletes: A Controlled Trial Using BlazePod and Microgate.

Background/Objectives: Agility and reaction speed are critical components of sports performance and are influenced by both physical conditioning and psychological state. Interventions such as SmartACT, which integrate mindfulness, acceptance, and commitment, guided imagery and hypnosis techniques are still underexplored in high-performance sport, despite their potential to affect both psychological and motor dimensions. Methods: This 7-week controlled trial investigated the effectiveness of SmartACT in reducing psychological and somatic symptoms and enhancing motor performance in adolescent at

Placebo and Nocebo Effects: The Advantage of Measuring Expectations and Psychological Factors.

Several studies have explored the predictability of placebo and nocebo individual responses by investigating personality factors and expectations of pain decreases and increases. Psychological factors such as optimism, suggestibility, empathy and neuroticism have been linked to placebo effects, while pessimism, anxiety and catastrophizing have been associated to nocebo effects. We aimed to investigate the interplay between psychological factors, expectations of low and high pain and placebo hypoalgesia and nocebo hyperalgesia. We studied 46 healthy participants using a well-validated condition

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: The Relationship Between the Fear Response and Chronic Stress.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disabling psychiatric condition that can develop following a physical, psychological, or sexual trauma. Despite the growing body of literature examining the psychological and biological factors involved in PTSD psychopathology, specific biomarkers that may improve diagnosis and treatment of PTSD have yet to be identified and validated. This challenge may be attributed to the diverse array of symptoms that individuals with the disorder manifest. Examining the interrelated stress and fear systems allows for a more comprehensive study of these symptoms,

Effects of a cue associated with cocaine or food reinforcers on extinction and postextinction return of behavior.

Studies of instrumental responding often include the delivery of a cue that is coincident with the delivery of the reinforcer. One purpose of this is for the cue to be removed during extinction and then presented later to assess whether responding returns (cue-induced reinstatement). In two experiments, we examined the effects of having a cue associated with reinforcement present or absent during extinction. In Experiment 1, the cue was associated with fixed ratio responding for intravenous cocaine or food pellets in one context (Context A), followed by extinction in another context (Context B
