We present a case of a male in his early 50s assessed in the emergency department with a seemingly clear alcohol history but with classic symptoms of Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE): disorientation, gait ataxia and vertical nystagmus. He also had significant bilateral hearing loss and profound anterograde amnesia. In this case study, we present an unusual course of a 40-year-old patient with clinical signs of a viral infection with leading gastrointestinal symptoms. Anthropogenic habitat loss is widely recognized as a primary environmental concern. By contrast, debates on the effects of habitat fragmentation persist. To facilitate overcoming these debates, here we: (i) review the state of the literature on habitat fragmentation, finding widespread confusion and stigma; (ii) identify consequences of this for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management; and (iii) suggest ways in which research can move forward to resolve these problems. AIM: Hashimoto encephalopathy (HE) is a serious but treatable condition that is probably underdiagnosed. We summarize and review all published cases to delineate the disease and to alert paediatricians so that they recognize the disease in children.
